LET’S DO THIS, PEOPLE. We’re going to dash off a few initial reactions, but we’re mostly holding off until tomorrow’s podcast to give our thoughts. Let’s hear yours!

Performance by an actor in a leading role
Adrien Brody in “The Brutalist” (A24)
Timothée Chalamet in “A Complete Unknown” (Searchlight)
Colman Domingo in “Sing Sing” (A24)
Ralph Fiennes in “Conclave” (Focus Features)
Sebastian Stan in “The Apprentice” (Briarcliff Entertainment/Rich Spirit)

Timmee’s stunting on the red carpet didn’t hurt him, we see. We also tend to think the nominations for the Apprentice, while not at all undeserved, have a whiff of the zeitgeist about them, if you know what we mean. A shame that Daniel Craig got passed over.

Performance by an actor in a supporting role
Yura Borisov in “Anora” (Neon)
Kieran Culkin in “A Real Pain” (Searchlight)
Edward Norton in “A Complete Unknown” (Searchlight)
Guy Pearce in “The Brutalist” (A24)
Jeremy Strong in “The Apprentice” (Briarcliff Entertainment/Rich Spirit)

So happy for Borisov. This is a really tight category.

Performance by an actress in a leading role
Cynthia Erivo in “Wicked” (Universal)
Karla Sofía Gascón in “Emilia Pérez” (Netflix)
Mikey Madison in “Anora” (Neon)
Demi Moore in “The Substance” (MUBI)
Fernanda Torres in “I’m Still Here” (Sony Pictures Classics)

Karla Sofia Gascon makes jawdropping history as the first trans woman to be nominated for a Best Actress Oscar. Truly an amazing moment, especially in the middle of… all this. We have no doubt there were fireworks all over Brazil this morning for Fernanda Torres. We suspect this is going to Demi for a whole bunch of reasons. Big snub for Marianne Jean-Baptiste. A shame Pamela Anderson wasn’t considered. Nothing for Nicole Kidman.

Performance by an actress in a supporting role
Monica Barbaro in “A Complete Unknown” (Searchlight)
Ariana Grande in “Wicked” (Universal)
Felicity Jones in “The Brutalist” (A24)
Isabella Rossellini in “Conclave” (Focus Features)
Zoe Saldaña in “Emilia Pérez” (Netflix)

We don’t think we’d ever have predicted a year where Demi Moore and Ariana Grande were up for Oscars. We LOVE that Isabella Rosselini got consideration for her nearly silent, but hilariously effective bitchy nun performance. No Jamie Lee Curtis.

Best animated feature film of the year
“Flow” (Sideshow/Janus Films)
“Inside Out 2” (Walt Disney)
“Memoir of a Snail” (IFC Films)
“Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” (Netflix)
“The Wild Robot” (Universal)

Another surprisingly tough category. We suspect it’s down to Flow or The Wild Robot.

Best animated short film
“Beautiful Men” (Miyu Distribution)
“In the Shadow of the Cypress”
“Magic Candies” (Toei Animation)
“Wander to Wonder” (Miyu Distribution)
“Yuck!” (Miyu Distribution)

Achievement in cinematography
The Brutalist” (A24)
“Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.)
“Emilia Pérez” (Netflix)
“Maria” (Netflix)
“Nosferatu” (Focus Features)

We think The Brutalist might take this one, although who knows after that AI controversy hit.

Achievement in costume design
“A Complete Unknown” (Searchlight) Arianne Phillips
“Conclave” (Focus Features) Lisy Christl
“Gladiator II” (Paramount) Janty Yates and Dave Crossman
“Nosferatu” (Focus Features) Linda Muir
“Wicked” (Universal) Paul Tazewell

Wicked, of course. While we won’t discount the kind of costume design a movie like Conclave calls for (the red of those robes was shocking, beautiful, and not accurate for a reason), we can’t see how a film where virtually every character is wearing the same costume has a chance here.

Achievement in directing
“Anora” (Neon) Sean Baker
“The Brutalist” (A24) Brady Corbet
“A Complete Unknown” (Searchlight) James Mangold
“Emilia Pérez” (Netflix) Jacques Audiard
“The Substance” (MUBI) Coralie Fargeat

Oof. This is tough. A Complete Unknown is exactly the kind of movie that gets the Academy hard.

Best documentary feature film
“Black Box Diaries”
“No Other Land”
“Porcelain War”
“Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat”
“Sugarcane”

Best documentary short film
“Death by Numbers”
“I Am Ready, Warden”
“Incident”
“Instruments of a Beating Heart”
“The Only Girl in the Orchestra”

Achievement in film editing
“Anora” (Neon)
“The Brutalist” (A24)
“Conclave” (Focus Features)
“Emilia Pérez” (Netflix)
“Wicked” (Universal)

Best international feature film of the year
“I’m Still Here” Brazil
“The Girl with the Needle” Denmark
“Emilia Pérez” France
“The Seed of the Sacred Fig” Germany
“Flow” Latvia

I’m Still Here BY A MILE.

Achievement in makeup and hairstyling
“A Different Man” (A24) Mike Marino, David Presto and Crystal Jurado
“Emilia Pérez” (Netflix) Julia Floch Carbonel, Emmanuel Janvier and
Jean-Christophe Spadaccini
“Nosferatu” (Focus Features) David White, Traci Loader and Suzanne Stokes
Munton
“The Substance” (MUBI) Pierre-Olivier Persin, Stéphanie Guillon and
Marilyne Scarselli
“Wicked” (Universal) Frances Hannon, Laura Blount and Sarah Nuth

As impressive as Wicked might be in this category, we don’t see how The Substance doesn’t take it.

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original score)
“The Brutalist” (A24)
“Conclave” (Focus Features)
“Emilia Pérez” (Netflix)
“Wicked” (Universal)
“The Wild Robot” (Universal)

Insane that Challengers isn’t on here. We though the music for Emilia Perez was awful.

Best motion picture of the year
“Anora” (Neon)
“The Brutalist” (A24)
“A Complete Unknown” (Searchlight)
“Conclave” (Focus Features)
“Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.)
“Emilia Pérez” (Netflix)
“I’m Still Here” (Sony Pictures Classics)
“Nickel Boys” (Orion Pictures/Amazon MGM Studios)
“The Substance” (MUBI)
“Wicked” (Universal)

We’re actually glad to see that Dune: Part Two wasn’t forgotten. We think Wicked will probably get its sweep with next year’s Oscars. Karla Sofia Gascon is not likely to win, so there may be a rally around Emilia Perez in this category. But it probably comes down to A Complete Unknown or The Brutalist, both being the kinds of films the Oscars love. Nothing for Sing Sing or A Real Pain.
