Looks like theme-dressing is back on the menu, boys. Jeff Goldblum, Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo and Jonathan Bailey hit the yellow brick carpet at the Sydney premiere of Wicked dressed more or less in their character costumes.

Sigh. We’re sighing right now – out loud and everything. We’re not stupid, despite mountains of evidence to the contrary. We know, just as we did back when Margot Robbie treated the Barbie promo tour like an extended Halloween party, that people will be far too charmed by these castmembers and their willingness to dress Oz-ian to listen to us get all grumpy about it. Look at Jeff here. You think anyone wants to hear us complaining that he’s wearing a costume? He looks amazing! The tails are extremely dumb, however.
Ariana Grande in Vivienne Westwood
Yes, this is incredibly on point – to excess. Our take is this: If you saw this dress on any other person at any other event, would you really be able to avoid referring to the wearer as Glinda the Good Witch? It’s like when guys wear leather bomber jackets and fedoras. Sure, it’s a “real” outfit, but they have to field a lot of Indiana Jones cracks. From our perspective, it’s impossible to critique any of these looks because all people care about it is whether or not it’s “accurate,” which is one of the worst possible ways to discuss fashion, in our opinion. From a design perspective, we hate those vertical ruffles on the skirt. It’s interesting how they tried to use various shades of pink in the design, but the contrast makes some of them look dingy.
Cynthia Erivo in Louis Vuitton
Gotta say, this is pretty spectacular. Sure, it’s witchy as hell, but it’s not nearly as literal as Ariana’s or Jeff’s looks. The Cowardly Lion brooch choker is both gimmicky and stunning. Of the four of them, she showed up in the kind of theme-dressing we prefer: a high-fashion interpretation rather than a strict cosplay moment.
Jonathan Bailey in Dolce & Gabbana
This is also not particularly cosplay-ish, although it has a distinct Oz-ian feel to it. Then again, a lot of outfits would when you put them in a setting like this. It’s a pretty great look, but we can’t say the yellow satin is working for him and we don’t think the black footwear works with the suit.
