The Academy Museum Gala is only in its fourth year, but it’s already become a major stop on the awards season promo train, attracting the biggest crowd of movie A-listers since the previous year’s Oscars. For this reason, we are absolutely thrilled to note that Wicked star Ariana Grande opted not to engage in any sort of theme-dressing or cosplay.
There’s still reason to hope that we won’t be treated to six weeks of Glinda costumes on the red carpet. Wearing a vintage-inspired Balmain couture piece is a signal that she’s stepping into a prestige actress mode, which just makes good sense. It’s a pretty and sophisticated gown that manages to avoid being twee, even though it’s covered in polka dots and has a big bow right at the center of the bust. We could do without the latter, but the rest of the design looks great on her. We love that the trim around the bust and hem is gray and we kind of wish the sash was as well, although it should be noted that the dots are in gray and black. We don’t love the hairstyle, but we approve of the up do. Granted, she rarely wears her hair down, but it’s nice to see the right hair paired with a strapless gown.
