After Emilia Perez wowwed the film festival crowd, we feel like Selena Gomez has been quietly tamping down on some of her tackier style preferences in order to present a more sophisticated, grownup, “prestige actress” sort of aesthetic to her style. What that has meant in her case is an avoidance of frippery and trends along with an embrace of classic elegance and minimalism. But for the Academy Museum Gala, she’s managed the trick of combining both styles in one look. Behold, tacky elegance:
The fit’s great and the color sings on her. The styling is low-key and demure, which suits the dress. Whatever that textile is, it comes off blanket-thick in pictures, which we don’t love. We’re not offended by the bustier detail, but we think it takes a classic gown from elegant to tryhard. In a time when it’s more common than not to see panties on a red carpet, this is far from a dealbreaker, but we don’t think the juxtaposition works all that well.
