Chappell Roan came to her very first VMAs ready to slay some dragons.
She’s had an amazing career year and with that came some very complicated thoughts about her relationship with fame and what she owes the public. As we wrote in our piece for Cosmopolitan, this feels like her working through some of those feelings by using fashion – or costume design, if you want to be huffy about it, like we tend to be. She’s combining softness and vulnerability, with hardness and aggression, and it clearly had an effect on her as she hit the red carpet and immediately told a mouthy photographer to shut the fuck up. If we were talking about this from a purely style perspective, we might note that the coat doesn’t coordinate well with the dress or that the makeup is cakey and heavy, but that would be missing the point. This isn’t style, this is theater. We don’t mean that in a dismissive way. As symbolic fashion goes, showing up with a sword and gauntlets as your accessories is pretty powerful. We think she looks uniquely pretty here and it’s clear she’s expressing some essential part of herself. If nothing else, it’s probably the most interesting sheer dress we’ve seen on a red carpet in years.
