Casting Natasha Lyonne, Elizabeth Olsen, and Carrie Coon as sisters is so counter-intuitive that it instantly makes us interested in the results of that decision. It helps that they’re all really talented actresses, but what makes their casting in His Three Daughters so intriguing to us is how vastly different their energies are onscreen. Judging by the trailer, those differences are being put to good use.
It looks like a fantastic film, which is why we’re a little disappointed to see such a low-key promotional effort. But it’s Netflix, so it’s not surprising. We hate to say it, but the style choices here were a bit of a letdown as well.
To be fair, she’s playing completely to her strengths, and if she wasn’t standing front of a black backdrop, this might actually be photogenic. But any Netflix star should know what the company’s branding is gonna look like by now. Her hair looks fantastic and the overall Boho Glam style couldn’t suit her better. Of the three of them, her look is the best.
We’ll give Elizabeth credit for knowing how to dress for standing in front of a Netflix logo. You won’t hear these two homosexuals complaining about silver sequins on any red carpet, but the shape here is kind of blah and the hem looks unfinished in a not-deliberate sort of way. We also think the black pumps are a boring choice and the flat hair is wrong for the type of dress she’s wearing.
Carrie, we love you, which is why we’re telling you that you deserve better than this. We suspect she’s gal who likes minimalism, but this is just plain… well… plain. There are more interesting ways of expressing a low-key, low-fuss style than simply wrapping yourself in a piece of fabric. Love the necklace, but the hair is terrible and the makeup washes her out.

ABOUT THE MOVIE:
From writer-director Azazel Jacobs (FRENCH EXIT, THE LOVERS) comes this bittersweet and often funny story of an elderly patriarch and the three grown daughters who come to be with him in his final days. Katie (Carrie Coon) is a controlling Brooklyn mother dealing with a wayward teenage daughter; free-spirited Christina (Elizabeth Olsen) is a different kind of mom, separated from her offspring for the first time; and Rachel (Natasha Lyonne) is a sports-betting stoner who has never left her father’s apartment — much to the chagrin of her half-sisters, who share a different mother and worldview. Continuing his astute exploration of family dynamics in close-knit spaces, Jacobs follows the siblings over the course of three volatile days, as death looms, grievances erupt, and love seeps through the cracks of a fractured home.
