The Deadpool & Wolverine promo tour has been going on long enough that we feel safe in summing up its whole style approach: Emma Corrin is tasked with serving up edgy high-fashion looks, and Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman will stand next to them looking like a middle-aged gay couple on vacation.
We’re not wrong, are we? Normally, we’d be annoyed by male stars slagging off the promo work and getting their femme-presenting co-star to do all of the heavy lifting in heels and shapewear and makeup, but there are multiple reasons to believe that such a take isn’t warranted here. For one, it’s been fairly clear from their time on multiple red carpets that no one tells Emma Corrin what to wear and they certainly don’t allow themselves to be talked into dressing femme if they don’t want to. In other words, Emma’s dressing this way because they want to dress this way. Second, while both Jackman and Reynolds have fairly good red carpet resumes and a long history of impeccable menswear looks, this particular film doesn’t invite that level of formality. It’s bro fashion and it’s perfectly on point. This is the good kind of theme dressing; the kind that doesn’t assume that the audience can’t tell the difference between the actor and the character, the kind that acknowledges the tone of the project without lapsing into cosplay. Without knowing anything else about this movie, we’d have likely been able to figure out that it was some sort of action film and that Emma was playing the villain.
As for the looks, they’re all fine. We wouldn’t change anything about what the guys are wearing. We don’t love Emma’s dress on the merits, because it looks like a plaster cast molded into a dress, but it’s appropriately weird and looks pretty great on them.
