Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande kicked off the film’s promotional tour early, by presenting at the Oscars in full character cosplay. We blame Margot Robbie for this turn of events.
Part of the reason we dislike what the fashion press has dubbed “method dressing” is because it tends to kill any fashion conversation dead. No matter what we might want to say about the styling, proportions, color, or flattering aspects of any look, all anyone has to say in response is “It’s calling back to her character” and there’s nothing left to say about it. In a way, we tend to think the rise of red carpet cosplay in recent years is something of a ploy to shut up bitches like us when we point out something’s not working.
CYNTHIA ERIVO IN LOUIS VUITTON
Having said that, these are pretty spectacular looks in their own right. They’re not literal costumes (if she ever comes out in a pointed witch hat, we reserve the right to be total bitches about it), but they’re just evocative enough that everyone who knows the references will get them. This has a hard quality to it that suits her beautifully.
ARIANA GRANDE IN GIAMBATTISTA VALLI COUTURE
While this has a ridiculously soft quality that sits in perfect opposition to Cynthia’s look. It’s a borderline ridiculous design that suits her pretty well and yes, calls to mind her character. We honestly up they don’t spend the entire promo tour serving up this sort of good witch/bad witch cosplay, but we can’t get mad at this opening salvo.
