Wicked Little Letters stars Jessie Buckley and Olivia Colman hit the film’s London premiere red carpet in exactly the kind of highly discussable fashion we’ve come to expect from both of them, for very different reasons.

Those different reasons being: Olivia almost always finds interesting and stylish ways to stick to her modesty preferences and Jessie is almost always something of a trainwreck, stylistically speaking. But things took a slightly different turn this time.

Don’t get us wrong. This is not great. Putting aside our white-hot dislike of peach as a style color, this shade does absolutely nothing for her, especially with the blonde hair (which also does nothing for her). The lip color is all wrong and the footwear situation only increases the awkward factor, but we still wouldn’t call this a disaster. Sadly, we’d call it one of her better red carpet efforts. If the dress were black, the hair weren’t giving Weird Barbie and the lip color actually flattered her coloring, this would almost work.

This, on the other hand, isn’t working for us at all. The satin capri pants shouldn’t exist at all and if you want to wear a wrap, wear a wrap instead of a weird, puckery, craftsy-looking blouse that looks like a wrap. The shapes are weird and the textiles are terrible. This is such an odd set of choices coming from her. She’s usually so much more impeccable than this.

ABOUT THE MOVIE:
– A 1920s English seaside town bears witness to a dark and absurd scandal in this riotous mystery comedy. Based on a stranger than fiction true story, WICKED LITTLE LETTERS follows two neighbours: deeply conservative local Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). When Edith and fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town’s women – led by Police Officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan) – begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss, and Rose may not be the culprit after all.
– Starring Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley. In cinemas February 23rd 2024.
