We are holding out hope that the plethora of funeral frocks at the SAG Awards means all of the stylists got them out of their systems and we’ll be seeing tons of bold colors at the Oscars. That tends to be how these things shake out, although we’d never want to be quoted on that. At any rate, the SAGs had a ton of formal gothwear and these were some of the more discussable of the not-so-L BDs.
Alexandra Hedison (in Saint Laurent) and Jodie Foster (in Gucci)
They’re such a sharp and chic-looking couple. Jodie looks great in black. Not really feeling that front panel, though.
Audra McDonald in Christian Siriano
It’s a little underwhelming. The only thing it has going for it is the shape, and we hate how the sleeves are constructed.
Jessica Chastain in Armani Privé
We’ve seen her in every bold color imaginable over the years and they tend to sing on her coloring. Black does nothing for her. That dreary bodice doesn’t help.
Louisa Jacobson in Louis Vuitton
We’re not convinced that she’s the best wearer for it, but this is a killer design.
Naomi Watts in Dior Couture
Meh. It’s fine but forgettable.
Quinta Brunson in Saint Laurent
Love the pendant but we’re not feeling the little cape.
Sheryl Lee Ralph in Waad Aloqaili,
Pure gorgeousness. She looks amazing.
Taraji P. Henson in Giambattista Valli Couture
Proving that a plain black dress doesn’t have to be dull. The styling is perfection.
