Meghan Markle in Proenza Schouler at VARIETY’s 2023 Power of Women Awards

There are a rare few among the super-famous set who qualify for what we call “drop everything” status, as in, one of us will run up to the other one’s desk and blurt out “Drop everything, we’ve got pictures of Meghan Markle on the red carpet.” Some super-famous people are drop-everything types because they’re pure fashionistas, some have the status because they’re avant garde envelope-pushers, and some are on the list simply because they’re royal. After all, Cathy‘s a drop-everything roughly 80 percent of the time and most of her fashion is high-end catalog dull. Anyway, the Duchess of Sussex made a rare red carpet appearance (and an even rarer solo one) at Variety’s Power of Women Awards. Given her next phase as a television producer, this just makes good sense for her. As for the look, it’s exactly what you expect:

Minimal and neutral. No color shall touch this woman if she can help it. We’ll just say this about the “iconic” Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, from whom she clearly takes quite a bit of style inspiration: while she was chic in her restraint in the context of ’90s excess, her style was extraordinarily limited and, over time, would have become pretty boring. This is fine, but it’s only of interest because she’s wearing it. We think gold accessories would dress it up some. The white lining is a terrible design choice.
