It’s always fun for us to see a star cycle through various promotional personae using fashion as her main tool to do so. Back in her Downton Abbey and Cinderella days, Lily James was working that “English Rose” look for all it was worth. When she played Pamela Anderson, she discovered skin-tight dresses, extensions, and push-up bras. Now here she is on the opening night of her new West End play Lyonesse giving you Chic, Understated, Serious Artist:
It’s interesting. The dress has several elements that we’d normally hate for being so fussy, but they tend to work here because the rest of the design, including the textile, is borderline dull. There’s a sense of restraint fighting with a sense of being too much and the tension seems to work well for her. It’s the kind of dress that calls for a clean face, minimal jewelry and noncommittal shoes, all of which she’s aced. She looks pretty great. A shame the play is getting savage reviews.
