America’s OG Hot Uncle John Stamos sat down with InStyle for an exclusive interview and photo shoot from his Los Angeles home to discuss his new memoir, IF YOU WOULD HAVE TOLD ME, in which the actor and musician takes himself to task when it comes to divorce, recovery, fame, marriage, and hating FULL HOUSE. In his video interviews, Stamos tears up while opening up about Bob Saget and his impact on the Full House family, reveals a new video that Taylor Hawkins sent him over their shared passion for music, and unveils the treasures he keeps in his office from Elvis’s glasses to scrapbooks he handmade for his wife.
On how the Full House cast dynamic has changed since Bob Saget died: “The sad thing about losing Bob — I mean, there were a lot of reasons [it was sad], obviously — was that he was the guy who really kind of kept us together,” Stamos says of the cast’s lasting friendship, which included pool parties and barbecues long after those sets were struck. “We try; we talk. But we’re not together as much as we used to [be].” “We were a family, and I think people got that, too; both on and off camera.”
On if he’s maintained a relationship with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen: “There was a bit of a distance between us. Bob was always connected with them, and I was, too. I know it may look like I was upset that they didn’t do Fuller House and stuff, but when Bob died and they came back, oh my god it was just so beautiful. They said things to us that meant so much to all of us. That they loved their childhood, that we were such a big part of their lives and they are who they are because of their upbringing on the show.”
On his friendship with Taylor Hawkins through their shared passion for drumming: “Taylor Hawkins lived down the street and moved in right before the pandemic and we’d send drumming videos back and forth to each other, like here learn this, learn that.”
On Bob’s lasting impact on John’s outlook on life: “Bob never left anything on the table. Every time you talked to him he said I love you, I care about you, I’m proud of you. If I was hanging on a cliff on a branch and I had one phone call, it’d be Bob. And he probably wouldn’t be there, and I’d have to call back, then he’d call me sixteen times Are you still alive? You hanging? I’ll be there.” “You have to talk about people that have passed away because that’s how you keep them alive. Not only did I think I’d write a book, I was adamant about it. Then when Bob died, I want to talk about it. I want to tell everybody what they don’t know about him. I want to tell everybody how important he was.”
On how rehab opened his eyes to accept his role in his breakup with Rebecca Romijn: “Up until that moment, I was all, She’s terrible! She ruined my life! She’s the devil!,” he recalls. Stamos admits now that, “I really do feel that it’s taken me a long time to grow up. I went into adulthood kicking and screaming. I didn’t want to be [a grown up] because it seemed boring to me.”
On the romantic relationship that could have been with Lori Loughlin: He writes in his book that he had “the sort of true friendship that’s supposed to be the foundation of a great, lasting relationship” with Lori Loughlin. The on-screen couple’s real-life friendship felt, at one time to Stamos, like it was on the precipice of turning romantic. And maybe it could have been. They went as friends to the Victoria’s Secret fashion show after-party, where he met Romijn. At that moment, Stamos says he had to decide whether he should try to get out of the Friend Zone with Loughlin or pursue something new with Romjin. Cagey discussing this “what if?” even in this interview, Stamos says he thought both women represented different sides of his dream girl: “In my mind it was like … the two Sandys in Grease!”
On how went from siding with the critics of Full House to defending the show: “The critics were so shitty and I didn’t want to slam them too bad [in the book], but I was like, You know, if you didn’t like the show it wasn’t made for you,” he says. “I got in a bad habit for a long time of being on their side,” he says now of those who deemed themselves above cute catchphrases and children mugging for the camera. “But, ultimately, they were wrong.”
