The new trailer and poster for the upcoming Hunger Games prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes has dropped. For those who like that sort of thing, this will be a thing that they like.

Not that we’re dismissing it as unworthy of anyone’s time. The cast looks great, the visuals and art direction are very strong, and we have no doubt it’ll be a rousing crowd-pleaser, much in the same way as its original batch of films were.

It wasn’t until halfway through when we realized Tom Blyth’s character is the same one played by Donald Sutherland in the original films. Sue us. We haven’t kept up on this one. We really liked the first batch of films (believe it or not Lorenzo was way more into them than Tom, who normally champions these sorts of nerdy entertainments), but we hope this one is able to stand on its own as a story. We’re starting to get a little exhausted by these lore-heavy franchises that expect you to hold an encyclopedia of character and story information in your head before you watch the first frame of the latest project (we’re talking about you, Ahsoka). But the fans will love it, we’re sure.

Experience the story of THE HUNGER GAMES — 64 years before Katniss Everdeen volunteered as tribute, and decades before Coriolanus Snow became the tyrannical President of Panem.

THE HUNGER GAMES: THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS & SNAKES follows a young Coriolanus (Tom Blyth) who is the last hope for his failing lineage, the once-proud Snow family that has fallen from grace in a post- war Capitol. With his livelihood threatened, Snow is reluctantly assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), a tribute from the impoverished District 12. But after Lucy Gray’s charm captivates the audience of Panem, Snow sees an opportunity to shift their fates. With everything he has worked for hanging in the balance, Snow unites with Lucy Gray to turn the odds in their favor. Battling his instincts for both good and evil, Snow sets out on a race against time to survive and reveal if he will ultimately become a songbird or a snake.
