You can tell the Invictus Games were a triumph for Harry and Meghan, not just because of how well they were received by the crowds in attendance or how much worldwide press their appearances generated for the games (which is, despite the objections of some rabid people, the entire point of her appearances this week), but because the British media hauled out Thomas “Shithead” Markle this morning to talk about what a bad daughter he has. They couldn’t find anything bad to say about her behavior or comportment, so they returned to the old shit hits. Anyway, if you’d like to hear us rant about the shockingly egregious behavior by the British royal press this past week, tune into our angry cartoon voices in our latest podcast. And now, the weekend fashion wrapup. There’s color!
IN TOTÊME
Despite feverish attempts to paint her as attention-seeking, the only way we, long-time fashion commenters, can sum up Meghan’s public style is “exceedingly low key.” In this way, she tends to dress the opposite of royal women on public engagements, most of whom opt for bold colors and accessories to stand out. That’s not SoCal Style, which is her whole deal. This is boring to our eyes, but it’s also completely unobjectionable, which is largely the point of it. We’d have liked a longer hem, more interesting shoes, and a little bit more jewelry.
IN CAROLINA HERRERA
Your duchess loves herself a big ol’ sash, high on the waist. It’s not the best choice for her, but she does it constantly. Still, we can’t get mad at this. The color looks spectacular on her and the shirtwaist could easily become a go-to style for her. It’s not a type of dress royal women tend to wear often, which makes it a good choice as a signature look for her. In other news, Harry’s been working out.
IN CUYANA
As much as we don’t love her rigid reliance on neutrals, we have to admit this is a chic look. The waist is way too high and the belt is way too thick, as per the usual. Still, they look well-coordinated. We think a pump in a camel color or even a brown would’ve been nice here. Love Harry’s footwear.
IN CULT GAIA
You can’t get further away from conventional royal style than a strapless leather dress with laser cutouts. She looks fantastic. We’d have wanted to see a pendant, but that’s clearly not her bag. The putty-colored pumps are a too-safe choice.
