Funny Girl star Lea Michele wasn’t eligible for Tony as replacement cast member, but she brought down the house anyway with her 10,000th rendition of “Don’t Rain on My Parade” to close out the show. Before she had to get into her Fanny Brice togs, she walked the red carpet in this rather pretty Emilia Wickstead gown.
Because her reputation is so terrible, most of social media last night chose to see this as a blood-spattered gown and the jokes flew fast and thick. IN a way, we can sort of see the point. An entirely red floral against a white background is a slightly unusual print for a red carpet gown. The problem is compounded by the fact that the print doesn’t match at the various seams; a design choice that is entirely deliberate (made worse by placing an unmatched center seam in the bodice). Given the lack of detail and the way the construction obscures the print, it really does come off like splatters at first glance. Aside from the distracting seams, we think she looks pretty great and the low-key styling was a very good choice. Had she shown up in something too glitzy or dripping with borrowed jewels, she might have come off a little grandiose or full of herself, an image she will probably have to battle for the rest of her career.
