The long-awaited Barbie promo tour kicked off this weekend and as the cast gathered for a day of press junket duties and posed for a photo call, we found ourselves asking one very important question. Why is everyone but the lead actress dressed in such dreary neutrals?
Margot Robbie in Valentino
We knew well before this tour kicked off that we’d have to completely suspend our dislike of dressing in character for a film promotion. If an actress playing Barbie isn’t wearing Barbie-esque outfits for the tour, then what’s the point? For Margot’s sake, we hope she takes the opportunity to wear a color other than pink (one glance at the “real” Barbie’s closet will tell you she wears plenty of other colors), but for now, we can understand why she’d want to kick things off serving the ultimate Barbiecore style. This is very cute and totally on point, but if we’re being bluntly honest (as you know we must be), we don’t love the cutout. The combination of a high waist and a peek of underboob isn’t great. As for the other denizens of Barbie Land…
Ryan Gosling in King & Tuckfield
It’s … just okay. We can definitely understand why he wouldn’t want to dress like Ken for this tour, but we’re puzzled by the lightweight sweater paired with black pants and boots. It’s not really doing anything for him.
Issa Rae in St. Agni
This one definitely shocks us. She has such a great, colorful, stylish red carpet history. Why would she choose now of all times to go blandly neutral? The shapes aren’t all that flattering either.
Michael Cera
The socks are the only interesting part of the look.
America Ferrera in Elie Saab
WAY too many scalloped edges for our tastes. We’re also not crazy about the sheer lace panels.
Kate McKinnon in DKNY
This, on the other hand, is kind of great. We don’t expect everyone on this tour to show up in pink, after all. This is stylish and sharp and suits her really well.
Greta Gerwig in Prada
The skirt is kind of cute but the sweater is absolutely terrible. Why, Greta?
