Good Lady Cate continues to use her promotional fashion in a highly strategic as well as sustainable (although the two ideas aren’t mutually exclusive) manner as she sweeps through Cannes promoting The New Boy, in which she stars as a “renegade nun.” For these red carpets, she’s keeping things within a fairly rigid style genre of her own creation: Mother Superior Chic. In other words, it’s getting pretty nunny up in here.
AT THE ZONE OF INTEREST PREMIERE IN LOUIS VUITTON
Her stylist Elizabeth Stewart maintains that both of these gowns were sustainably produced and that this first one was made with deadstock textiles “found in the atelier.” We can’t speak to that, except to note that high end red carpet fashion simply can’t be environmentally conscious. The best it can be is to sound like it is. As for this nun thing she’s clearly working through, it feels a little disappointingly theme-y and character-based, but as we’ve been noting for a good while now, this is how stars use fashion more and more: as promotional costumes. The bodice and cape are dramatic but those potholder pockets ruin the bottom half.
AT THE KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON PREMIERE IN LOUIS VUITTON
It’s dramatically nuntastic, but we don’t like the way the white satin is used in the bodice and skirt, from the flimsy bust to the saddlebags, AT ALL. Maybe this is just a one-time thing and she’s not seriously going to be wearing Catholic Couture from here until the Oscars. PLEASE CATE. NOT THAT.
