Later this week, we’ll be doing our yearly “Ology” posts, where we scrutinize the awards season style choices of the leading acting nominees and try to figure out what they’re going to wear to the Oscars. It’s never been a particularly illuminating exercise in terms of its ability to predict, but it’s always a fun way to document how a nominee navigated these fraught, careerist waters. We never cover all of the nominees because how does one examine the style choices of someone like Bill Nighy or Frances McDormand? One nominee who’s not going to get the Ology treatment his year is Andrea Riseborough, and that’s kind of a shame because she never fails to be interesting in her choices. Case in point:
There are many ways to campaign for an Oscar (as Cate Blanchett will tell you), but we suspect the controversy surrounding the unusual nature of her campaign, not to mention her lack of nominations among the other awards shows, has kept her from making too many appearances lately. As we said: a shame. Certainly, none of the other nominees are showing up like this. We could quibble with several of the details here, like the dark hose with beige slingbacks or the hairstyle or the bolo tie or the caduceus earring. On most wearers, we’d find the combination of these details to be overwhelmingly precious, possibly even an affectation. But she’s known for her chameleon abilities as well as her off-the-beaten-path style, so instead, this all comes off rather uniquely chic. The suit is giving headmistress, but everything else about the look says “artist.”
