Pop Style Opinionfest: The Oscar Nominations and the Riseborough Affair

Posted on January 27, 2023

OOOOOOOOOOOH, GIRL. We went there. You knew we would. For this week’s podcast, we dive into the 2023 Oscar nominations and unpack some of the fucked-up thinking that drives the votes of Academy members and, in a larger sense, fuels Hollywood itself. Specifically, we take a look at the “grassroots” campaign for To Leslie star Andrea Riseborough, what it reveals about allyship in the entertainment industry and who is allowed to benefit, and give our thoughts on how it almost certainly wound up contributing to The Woman King‘s Viola Davis and Till‘s Danielle Deadwyler lack of nominations.

We had a LOT to say in this one, so as we used to say during the PSO promos, strap yourselves in, darlings.
