We had a whole range of reactions to Janelle Monae’s Oscar gown, from mild surprise to see her outside of her own box to mild disapproval because the look didn’t seem particularly Oscars-appropriate, and finally, to accepting it for the uniquely beautiful and dead sexy look it is.
It’s rare to see her outside of her strict color range of black, white and red. The skirt is a beautiful color and the construction of it makes it both sexy and sweeping on her. We don’t have an objection to showing skin at the Oscars. There’s certainly a long history of it. We think our initial reaction to it being a little wrong for the night came down to the style, which felt way more Grammys-appropriate and the color story, which reads Halloween. We do tend to think that bodice is hanging kind of low on her, but aside from that, we really love the way the design highlights and envelopes her body. We don’t love the choker but the rest of the head styling is gorgeous.
