Congratulations to a history-making queen. Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian woman to win a Best Actress Oscar after becoming the first openly Asian woman to be nominated for one. It was a jubilant, triumphant end to a sometimes intense campaigning season and she met the moment with grace and style, as we knew she would.
We were briefly underwhelmed when we first caught glimpse of it. It’s a bit understated for the Oscars. She even wound up wearing less ostentatious jewelry than we assumed. But we think there’s a quiet confidence and elegance to the choice. This was a dream come true for her and she dressed for the occasion in a dreamy, floaty, ethereal sort of gown that felt soothing and celebratory at the same time. She looks relaxed, serene, beautiful, and very comfortable with herself. As statements go, this was a subtly effective one.
