In deciding to feature these shots of former FLOTUS Michelle Obama hitting the Jimmy Kimmel set to close out the promotion of her book, The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times, we assumed we’d be framing the post as a sort of nostalgic return to the Shelley O days of this blog, when writing about the First Lady’s fashion choices didn’t seem like such a rage-inducing red flag to people or a flame to a bunch of bot-moths and troll-moths. But then we realized we’d be missing the point of her style evolution if we framed things that way. She’s very much NOT the Shelley O of her FLOTUS days.

As Vanessa Friedman pointed out in her brilliant article on the former First Lady’s book tour style today in The New York Times, Michelle Obama has loosened up her style considerably in her post-White House life, but she ramped up the changes much more noticeably in the past year. Among the most notable and important of her changes is her choice to wear her hair in braids; something she decided not to do when she was First Lady because she didn’t think America could handle it. Sadly, she was almost certainly right on that point. Her clothing has gotten a lot trendier, a lot flashier, and as far away as possible from the country club-inspired aesthetic of pencil skirts and J Crew cardigans that defined her White House style for so long. The suit is absolutely gorgeous on her; color, cut and style all suit her beautifully. She’s never looked as good as she has this year, promoting this book, and in her telling, finally able to feel comfortably herself in public.
