Janelle Monae’s look for the Governors Awards only confirms that which we suggested last week. She’s out of her whimsical phase for now. Having said that, she still likes to wear things so off-beat that they look like fantasy costumes.
This looks like something for the next Dune movie. It’s elegant, but unusual, which is exactly where she shines the most on the style spectrum. We love the shape of the stand-up collar and accentuated shoulders. The skirt is gorgeous and her hair and makeup really complete the look beautifully. Quibbles: we don’t love the sheer turtleneck, the beaded applique looks a little like a fence or a bag for carrying fruit, and the waist trim looks a little uneven. Overall, this is still a win. She looks lovely.
