We gave Taylor Swift and Machine Gun Kelly their own spotlight posts because, well…she’s Taylor Swift and he wore something crazy, but it’s time to round up some of the most discussable looks at the 2022 American Music Awards and, y’know, discuss them. In loving but critical terms, as always.

Girl, you had us until the ass. The front of the gown looks gorgeous and the back makes you look like you sat in something you shouldn’t, which is so not hot.

Ari Lennox in Aliétte

We’re of the opinion that a plunging neckline tends to require some structure surrounding it, otherwise it just looks like someone draped some fabric over their neck.

Bebe Rexha in Buerlangma

There’s a point at which you have to give up the “she doesn’t know how to dress her body” assumption and just accept that this is how she wants to dress her body. The shape and volume aren’t particularly flattering to her, the train is a miss and both the boots and the gloves make the whole look markedly worse.

Becki G. in Monsoori
Pin

Simple and actually kind of elegant, to our surprise.

Carrie Underwood in Tony Ward
Pin

It looks vintage to us, which is neither a compliment nor a criticism; just an observation that the colors and pattern have a distinctly decades-ago feel to them. Not a bad dress, though.

Charlie Puth in Marni
Pin

This is really cute, but the black accessories are jarring with it.

Coco Jones in Annakiki
Pin

Pretty damn fabulous. We love the shape of that skirt.

D-Nice in Dolce & Gabbana
Pin

Love the hat, suit and kicks, but we think the shirt’s letting the look down.

Dove Cameron in Marc Jacobs
Pin

It just feels like too much look. The outfit is so focus-pulling that the styling needs to be dialed back a little. We’d have told her to lose the braids and maybe get a less aggressive-looking manicure. We’d like to say she should lose the gloves too, but we think the look kind of needs them.

Jessica Betts (in Richfresh) and Niecy Nash-Betts

A gorgeous couple in spectacular outfits. That suit is amazing.

Karrueche Tran in Christian Siriano
Pin

This is stunning. Probably a huge pain in the ass to wear, but sometimes a girl’s gotta work for it if she wants to wear some art.

Kelly Rowland in Nicolas Jebran Couture
Pin

Can’t get mad at that, although we do wish the gloves were several inches shorter.

Kim Petras in Blumarine
Pin

As Britney homages go, it’s a pretty good one, but she’s a sneeze or one deep breath away from a wardrobe malfunction.

Lauren Jauregui in Norma Kamali
Pin

This is gorgeous, but it feels like too much dress. We have liked a lower neckline and less voluminous sleeves.

Lione Ritchie in Dolce & Gabbana
Pin

A classic, looking classic.

Måneskin in Gucci

Such is the power of these glampires that they can almost make us think those garter trousers look good. They don’t, but they’re coming pretty close to pulling them off. We love that when they do these sorts of coordinated looks, Victoria is no different in her style. A lot of times with bands, “the girl” is always expected to dress hot while the guys get to dress cool. She’s just as cool as the boys here, possibly cooler.

Meghan Trainor in Michael Costello
Pin

It’s okay. A little too Barbie for our tastes, but it’s a fun look. Her hair’s not doing it, though.

Pink in Vintage Bob Mackie
Pin

We can certainly understand why anyone would want to wear a vintage Mackie if the oppurtunity arises, but we think this is a classic Girl, That’s Not Your Dress moment. We can see Cher or Tina working this back in the day, but Pink has such a different vibe and look that it just doesn’t quite suit her.

Sabrina Carpenter in Oscar de la Renta
Pin

Sure, she looks hot, but all these two homosexuals can think is how insanely irritating it must be to wear all that fringe.

Saint Jhn in Maison Margiela
Pin

It’s such a spectacular ensemble, but we don’t think the neon works with it at all.

Sheryl Lee Ralph in Claude Kameni
Pin

It’s not entirely to our tastes, but let a legend be hot, we say.

Tinashe in Marc Jacobs
Pin

This is super-fun and she looks adorable in it. You can tell she loves it.
