We were kinda pissed at several celebrity male attendees last night. While we knew a good deal of them weren’t going to adhere to the requested white tie dress code, the ones who came in jeans or sneakers or nondescript suits really annoyed the hell out of us. Anyway, here’s Riz Ahmed.
Before you start composing your angry response, you should probably know what he said about his ensemble. As he told Variety on the red carpet, “This is an homage to the immigrant workers that kept the Gilded Age golden, you know?” He added that his Cartier necklace was inspired by Islamic jewelry from South India,”the kind of jewelry my mom used to have.” He also noted cheekily that his white drawstring fulfilled the “white tie” brief. Consider our mouths shut, sir. One of the requests regarding the dress code was to embody the grandeur or “the dichotomy” of the Gilded Age, which means he is, in fact, entirely on point and dressed according to the theme. As we noted earlier, it’s completely correct and expected that many of the attendees this year would not have any desire to exalt the robber barons and other .01 percenters who exploited the immigrant classes or people of color. He’s using fashion to make a powerful point and that makes this look completely and utterly appropriate on every level. Also he looks hot, but that probably goes without saying.
