Look, there’s just no way we can even let you scroll down before we let the designer have their say about exactly what you’re looking at here. The Instagram account for Loewe posted the following by way of explanation for Dan Levy’s eye-popping Met Gala look:

The look features two seminal works by artist and LGBTQ activist David Wojnarowicz (1954-1992), crafted with the brief of imagining what a “gay superhero” might wear.

The LOEWE bespoke polo and trousers depicts two men kissing, from a 1984 artwork that deftly reappropriates a homophobic cartoon to instead celebrate same-sex love. Photos of Wojnarowicz and his friends surround the couple, amid a background of world maps, indicating the arbitrary borders and divisions the queer community faced.

The LOEWE T-Pouch clutch illustrates a portrait of the artist as a child, with surrounding texts predicting his future; deemed an outcast by society, as a gay man. The work asserts visibility for queer people—exposing the hatred and bias experienced daily, while celebrating love and joy.

To honour the collaboration, LOEWE has made a donation to Visual AIDS, an organization Wojnarowicz supported, that continues to promote AIDS awareness and education.

We’re not dumb. We know you scrolled quickly to get to the pictures. Get back up there and read about the very important message behind it all this instant.

We’ll wait.

Okay, now that we’re all on the same page: We honestly loved this before we heard the inspiration behind it. It’s insane and totally unexpected coming from him. The fact that it had such a queer-positive message and paid tribute to an artist who, quite frankly, never got the attention owed him just thrills us. It’s queer as fuck in every sense of the word. And he’s far too aware of the world of celebrity red carpets to not understand what a huge risk he was taking. He knew ridicule was in the offing and he did it anyway.

LOVE that.
