It’s time – some might say well past time – for us to make a public admission. This is hard and we realize we’re opening ourselves up to public rebuke, but we have to be honest with you. We’re not sure why it’s taken us so long to admit this, but here goes: Jessica Chastain has bad style instincts and borderline bad taste. There. We said it.
VERSACE
You’d think she had a more definable sort of style after a decade as a movie star, but having covered her extensively through that whole period, we can’t really sum it up in an articulated sort of way except to say she likes solid colors and more or less classic shapes, with an occasional shot of va-va-voom in the mix when she’s feeling all movie star. But more often than not, we’ve found her style choices to be generic and sometimes a little awkward. Not terrible necessarily; just not notable enough or photogenic enough. To be specific about it: we don’t think the jacket goes all that well here and that top is kind of tacky. The cat-eye shades don’t suit her face. The ruched satiny sleeves and wide-legged pants are a weird combination.
VALENTINO
It’s a beautiful color on her and we love the jewelry with it, but the proportions feel off all over. The cutouts are too high and she’d have been better off in an up do, we think.
Basically, we think she needs to get out of whatever Amy Adams-esque rut she’s fallen into. That shift she wore last week to the Dior show was the cutest – and most off-brand – thing we’ve seen her wear in ages.
