It’s strange how many velvet suits we’ve been seeing on celebrities lately. Not that we mind a good fashion cycle of Prince homages, but this is such an odd time of year to be wearing such a heavy garment and yet it’s been one of the hottest celebrity style trends of May 2021. Must be one of those “let’s go crazy now that we’re out of the house” things that are likely to dominate the rest of the year. To be fair, Demi’s had a specific reference. It was an homage to Elton John and as style appreciations go, we think they nailed it:

Demi Lovato is one of those stars who’s always making big, declarative statements about themselves in their style and even performance choices. They recently came out as non-binary (which: congrats!) and we can’t help feeling the sort of bold sexy swagger to this suit – the super-broad shoulders, the wide-legged pants, the plunging neckline – is Demi’s way of making a statement about themself even as they pay tribute to queer forebears. There’s a lot of Joan Jett north of the neck and it looks amazing on them.
