“Locked Down” Is the Pandemic Entertainment We Didn’t Know We Needed

The first new must-see trailer for 2021 has dropped and if you’d described it to us ahead of time, we’d have said “NO WAY am I watching that.” There have been several attempts to dramatize life in the Covid era and every last one of them looked awful to us. We’ve been arguing for some time that people on lockdown don’t want their entertainment to be lockdown-themed. After all, no one was making musicals about being hungry during the Depression.

HOWEVUH…

That looks inexplicably charming and fun. While it does have the requisite Zoom scenes (a thing we can’t wait to never see again), this attempt at a 2020/21-specific story has an actual story to it – one that isn’t entirely about being stressed, bored and alone.

Turns out, while we didn’t want to see another teleconferenced movie, if you give us one where Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor cook up a scheme to rob diamonds from Harrods, we’re complete on board. It’s kind of funny how Anne Hathaway won her Oscar and then was all “Right. Check that off the list. Now, I’m just gonna play jewel thieves over and over again because I want to.” She’s become for sexy jewel thieves what John Wayne was for cowboys.

Also, it bears repeating: Ejiofor’s voice remains an all-time panty-dropper. Like warm cognac with a drop of honey. We can’t wait to see them as a couple onscreen. Their energies are so different but they look hot together.

HBO Max debuted the first trailer for LOCKED DOWN, the new original feature film from Warner Bros. Pictures and AGC Studios. Doug Liman directed the movie which stars Academy Award® winner Anne Hathaway and Academy Award® nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor. Also starring are Stephen Merchant, Mindy Kaling, Lucy Boynton, Dulé Hill, Jazmyn Simon, with Ben Stiller and Academy Award® winner Ben Kingsley. Academy Award® nominee Steven Knight wrote the screenplay and P.J. van Sandwijk, Alison Winter and Michael Lesslie produced. The film premieres on HBO Max THURSDAY, JANUARY 14.

In LOCKED DOWN, just as they decide to separate, Linda (Anne Hathaway) and Paxton (Chiwetel Ejiofor) find life has other plans when they are stuck at home in a mandatory lockdown. Co-habitation is proving to be a challenge, but fueled by poetry and copious amounts of wine, it will bring them closer together in the most surprising way.
