Okay, there’s a little bit of Maggie Thatcher in there as well, but if this trailer is anything to go by, the next season of The Crown will be focused on the Princess of Wales at a level most of the other non-Queen characters never got.
Honestly, that’s as it should be. If you’re producing a season of television that covers the British royal family from the late ’70s to the late ’80s, how could you NOT turn it into the Diana Show? That’s literally what happened to the BRF in the ’80s.
Some of the shots of Emma Corrin as Diana are literally breathtaking. She doesn’t look like her from every angle, but every once in a while, the camera catches her Diana-ness perfectly. Less impressive is the casting of Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher. We have no doubt she can handle the role with aplomb, but she doesn’t look remotely like her. We’re reminded of Cate Blanchett portraying Phyllis Schlafly in Mrs. America; a similar instance of an actress with too much elegant bearing and too-perfect bone structure playing a woman who was hard, tough, and not at all glamorous.
And they better not make Charles look too sympathetic – or Elizabeth, for that matter. You can see more promo shots for the season here.
