Kittens, please enjoy this gorgeous gallery devoted to Black gorgeousness. In putting together all of these collections of vintage ads and catalogues, we’re forced to note each time how the world depicted is almost entirely and exclusively white. Things being what they are, this dynamic has only changed a little over the last fifty years and the magazine industry is still struggling to answer the question of why so few of their covers feature Black people. This was never the case with Ebony, of course. Founded in 1945 by publisher John Harold Johnson, Ebony has been serving up Black beauty, glamour and excellence for seven decades. It stands as one of the most important magazines of the 20th Century, with a multi-generational legacy that cannot be denied.
