Toronto International Film Festival: Sarah Paulson in Miu Miu, Burberry and Prada

Posted on September 09, 2019

It seems like we haven’t had a Sarah Paulson post in ages. No wonder this past summer felt like a fashion drought. There was no Ms. Paulson out there making red carpets worth looking at.

Honest, verbatim first reaction. “Ewww GOD, no.” While Miss Woman has a knack for working ugly fashion, she’s much better in the loud and obnoxious end of the scale. Wild silhouettes, eye-searing colors, and unusual textiles are her stock in trade. Sweet, retro prairie dresses with faux naive daisy prints should be set on fire rather than worn by her. We feel strongly about this, as you can see. It’s just a total Girl, That’s NOT Your Dress thing.

This is … different. One of the personae she’s particularly good at working on a red carpet is Stern Headmistress, of which this makes a somewhat light and neutral version. We don’t think beige or cream is the best choice of neutral for her and the somewhat standard shapes make this a little underwhelming, but there’s enough visual interest and a bit of an off-kilter feel that suits her well.

Ah, there she is. There’s our dark, vaguely foreboding diva. This is fabulous and it’s so perfectly her that it makes up for the other two. Almost. That daisy frock’s gonna be hard to get over.
