Kind of hard not to smile looking at these pictures.
We’ll give Taron and this publicity team credit: they seem determined to avoid the kinds of de-queering accusations that were leveled against Bohemian Rhapsody. Of course it helps when the subject of your biopic is also an executive producer on it. Which also explains why they went for “hot, muscular, square-jawed Elton John” as the film’s primary image. Hey, if a queen’s gonna tell his story, he’s got a right to cast a hot guy in the lead part.
Sir Elton is looking very Cannes-stylish here, but it’s notable how restrained he is. Not that we would expect him to step out in stagewear, but it feels like he’s letting his star take center stage.
That is a simply spectacular look, from shades to shoes. It’s Elton-adjacent, but much more modern, with less of a sparkly-gay vibe and more of a 21st Century Dandy one. If we have one nitpick it’s that the t-shirt looks a little flimsy and stretched out.
