Pop Style Opinionfest: Priyanka Chopra, Kevin Hart and an Extremely Online Week

Posted on December 07, 2018

Oooooh, girl! There was a whole shit-tonne of stupid stuff erupting online this week. And you know us, we just had to say a few things about it. First up, our thoughts on the extremely ill-advised celebrity hit piece at The Cut, regarding the wedding of Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas. We saw this one coming from a mile away and we’ll tell you why. Also: it’s a symptom of a dying digital media culture and the desperate ways it’s lashing out. That is not the only controversial celebrity tale of the week, however.

But before we get to that mess, TV and movie reviews! We have initial thoughts about the first three episodes of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel:

And unforch, they’re fairly critical initial thoughts. Then, Lorenzo waxes rhapsodic about Roma:

Which he calls a masterpiece, while Tom struggled his way through Vox Lux:

Which proved to be a fairly muddled take on celebrity and American culture, with a Natalie Portman performance that you couldn’t stop watching, even as you try and figure out if it’s camp or not.

And finally, Boy Erased, about which we were not in total agreement:

Although we were both deeply touched and affected by it. How could we not be? Still, Tom had some issues with the directing and script, even if the performances are all across-the-board flawless. And the review of this film allowed us to segue perfectly to current events (unfortunately), as we offered our thoughts on the Kevin Hart Oscar-hosting brouhaha, why it matters, and what we think it should mean for his career going forward.

Yes, it’s a veritable smorgasbord of hot takes, darlings! Dive in! We’re feeling spicy!
