Gotta say, after years of covering Doctor Who promotional events featuring pretty young women peeking out of the TARDIS behind or next to the man playing the title character, it’s pretty amazing to consider a pretty young woman standing in front of it, completely alone. The Doctor is in.
Not that the “pretty” or “young” parts matter for the character or the show, but part of our delight here stems from an opportunity to assess The Doctor’s red carpet style. Sure, we had a few things to say about Capaldi’s aging punk and Smith’s tweedy children’s show host, but let’s face it: talking about floral jumpsuits and matching velvet clutches is more fun. We love this look. We weren’t a hundred percent clear on her red carpet history but we’d hoped she’d bring a bright, modern practicality to her approach and so far, we’re liking what we’re seeing. The floral may not be for everyone, or the jumpsuit, for that matter, but we think she’s extremely well-suited to it. We really like the shoe choice but the bag feels a bit large and formal for the rest of it. Still, it’s a great start. Doctor Who isn’t normally the most poledance-heavy of shows, but we suspect she’s going to be called upon to up her fashion game more than any previous bearer of the title. As she’s done here, we hope she keeps things in an easy, colorful, personality-heavy zone for her. There’s no need for her to worry about looking like a Vogue cover because that’s not what the character’s about.
