Here’s a perfect example of a wearer-specific look:
Janelle Monáe attends the 2015 MOCA Gala in Los Angeles, California in a Sass & Bide caped dress paired with an Emm Kuo clutch and Stuart Weitzman fringed sandals.
We can’t imagine this working on any other human being but we think it looks pretty fabulous on her. Partly, it’s because we’re happy to see her break out of her years-long uniform of dark suits. But mostly it’s because she managed to make that break, go in a completely different style direction, and still look entirely and uniquely herself. That’s true style. Yes, these pieces are odd and hard to make sense of, but overall, the look manages a strange halfway point between exuberance and restraint that just makes sense for her. The only parts we don’t like are the fringe-y sandals.
