Nicole Kidman on the Set of “The Family Fang”

Posted on August 06, 2014

We like to look at these on-set pics completely free of any information about the film itself. Ignorance, darlings. It’s the T Lo way.

But really, we do it so we can look at the costumes with a fresh pair of eyes and to see what thoughts pop into our heads. This time, we immediately said “Wow, she’s getting as far away from that Princess Grace disaster as she can, isn’t she?” Then we ran off to IMDB and found out she’s playing Jason Bateman’s sister in this and that just strikes us as very weird casting.

    Kidman goes hipster.

  • mlurve

I think she looks totally cute, but I honestly would not have recognized her if you didn’t tell me it was Nicole Kidman in the title

    • evave2

YES! If she wasn’t Nicole Kidman in Jason Bateman flic, I would not have known that was Nicole Kidman. Maybe the sunglasses hide more of her face than I thought they would.

      • Rebekah B

I thought it was Dakota Johnson from just the first picture.

    • marishka1

She looks like Christina Hendricks lost a lot of weight.

      • JeanDNelson

  • Synnae

B*tch stole my look! Actually and not surprisingly consider this is pretty much my default look, I like this a lot more on her than her regular casual style, which tends to be more girly.
    The casting is weird though…

    • sugarkane105

      It’s a cute look!

    • KateShouldBeWorking

Both Kidman and Bateman can go dark so I can see the personalities meshing; physically, I see no resemblance whatsoever.

    • kittenwithaquip

Yeah, it’s funny to see this look classified as “hipster”. This is my default casual look, and (sorry if this pains you) I’m a stay-at-home mom. There’s nothing particularly “hipster” about me. I just don’t ever want to default to mom jeans and Crocs.

      • smallgirlsaretrouble

Agreed – except swap the silk shirt for something in cotton (I’m not game to wear silk again until I stop breastfeeding).

  • lecoffeeaddict

Wow! Nearly unrecognizable. She looks so young and…hipster

  • Shibori Girl

Cute in an Elf Lord kind of way.

  • Samantha Klein

I NEED those boots. Like, yesterday.

    • Gatto Nero

      Fiorentini + Baker Eternity boot!

    • I have a similar pair from Rocket Dog, in case you are not rolling in dough.

      • Gatto Nero

Yes — the F+Bs are $525 to $550, if you can find them.

  • Wink

    Her hair looks good.

  • Kent Roby

The casting does sound odd, but I loved Bad Words enough to give this movie a try. The fact that she looks cute and unrecognizable is a good thing. I hope this returns her closer to “To Die For” territory.

    • TinyDynamo

I just rewatched a bit of that film a few weeks ago, & was amazed that I had forgotten how unbelievably talented she was! That movie was so great, & she was so underrated in it.

      • Kent Roby

Lately I’ve been on a kick of rewatching comedies from 15-20 years ago…last night I watched “Drop Dead Gorgeous”, had forgotten that Amy Adams, Allison Janney, and Brittany Murphy were in it (I remembered the main 4 actors). I plan to rewatch “To Die For” soon.

        • Kitten Mittons

“Hey Amber, you get my smokes?”

      • Frank_821

actually i thought she got a lot of acclaim for that role. I know she got a Golden Globe for it. Wasn’t that one of her first roles to show folks in Hollywood there was more to her than the latest Mrs Cruise

        • Mary Sinning Poole

I don’t think she was Mrs. Cruise yet when when made To Die For. I love that movie.

          • Kent Roby

I had to look it up: she married Cruise in 1990, divorced him in 2001; “To Die For” (for which she did win a GG) was 1995.

          • Mary Sinning Poole

Here I thought the reason she was so good in To Die For was because she hadn’t become Mrs. Cruise yet. Still love that movie.

  • bassfemme

The less blonde and the less forehead I see, the better she looks. But when I saw the big sunnies and the boots over skinny jeans, my first thought was Anne Hathaway.

    • kimmeister

      Me too!

    • ShaoLinKitten

Shoulda scrolled down before I posted, ’cause… me three.

  • sugarkane105

    NYC still has phone booths?

    • MarissaLG

Yeah, but they don’t look like that.

  • PinkyK

That is totally a Pinky outfit! I wear that look so often I call it my all star uniform.

  • Stacey Summerville

    She looks like Anne Hathaway

  • Sarah

IMDB says it’s also a drama, which seems weird for Jason Bateman. Christopher Walken is in it also, so it’s a fairly mixed bag of weird casting, I’d say. I don’t have a problem with her look, except for if you picture that hair in blonde, it’s getting close to Cold Case territory.

    • demidaemon

You know, you are quite right. I remember thinking that Lily’s hair changed style every season, and this wasn’t one of the better looks.

      • Sarah

I seem to remember that they made rather hilarious fun of it on SNL at one point. It was quite the haystack of product.

        • demidaemon

What’s even funnier about it is that I think they returned to it in a later season, for some confusing reason. As if a Philly homicide detective is going to have the time to put that together every day.

    • Drunken Housewife

There is no way it is a straight up drama, unless they have departed from the book hugely. The book is a very dark comedy.

      • Sarah

Ah, should’ve known it was a book. That makes sense – dark comedy suits that casting way better.

  • TinyDynamo

She looks so…human. Huh. I’d forgotten she could look like anything but a wealthy Ice Queen.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

I am a fan of the Tough Chic with Money look. I think La Kidman can pull it off; color me intrigued.

  • MarissaLG

That ribbon belt is very weird. I so rarely see that deployed in real life.

    • kimmeister

It’s super ugly. I only see people wear their belts slung that low when they need the belt to go underneath the beer belly.

  • FrigidDiva

Too bad she doesn’t adopt this hair color in real life, it looks so much healthier and suits her coloring better than that fried blonde she insists on sporting.

  • ErmengardeGreen

I like her styled like this! It never would have occurred to me to Portland her up a little, but it suits her.

  • Ana the Hated

    Peter Pan chic

  • smayper

Top looks like surgical scrubs. I love everything else, though.

  • Latin Buddy

Odd. Miss Ice Queen herself in a comedy?

  • Sam Smith

    I like the dark hair.

  • Shelby

I really like her as a brunette though.

  • MartyBellerMask

Must be the black sheep of the family. That’s what black sheep look like in movies. I bet under the shades she’s got raccoon eyes.

  • snarkykitten

For a second, she looked like Christina Hendricks’ size 0 sister.

  • I thought this was Dakota Johnson.

  • Kim Elmore

I just read this book! #excited

  • Courtney A Kessler

“The Family Fang” is one of my favourite books in recent years – and if Ms Kidman is playing who I assume she’s playing (a film actress in the middle of a breakdown), then this look is perfect. The weird casting also makes sense considering the cast of characters are all part of a very dysfunctional family.

    • Jean Marie Downing

She is so too old for the part, though. I would have liked her as Camille, but Annie? Nope, sorry. 10 or 15 years ago maybe.

      • Drunken Housewife

The only part I could possibly buy her in is Annie’s lover. I’m guessing she’s Annie, and she’s 20 years too old for it and really seems wrong for it. Not to be annoying, but I’d love seeing Jennifer Lawrence as Annie. Helen Mirren would be a bitchin’ Camille.

  • MilaXX

Is Justine no longer acting? I almost always find Hollywood’s version of regular people’s clothing laughable. Nicole’s look is no exception.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Nicole is working on her Maggie Gyllenhaal look-I can see Maggie wearing this same look.

  • Imasewsure

And now I figured out who she reminded me of in these pictures… Jason Bateman’s sister… too bad he doesn’t already have a sister who is an actress….. hmmmmm

  • I really want that blouse. WANT IT. It’s very Link from Legend of Zelda.

Is it a movie about a pet wolf? That’s my immediate mental association when I read “The Family Fang.”

    • demidaemon

See my comment below to see what my interpretation of the movie is. 😉

  • demidaemon

This movie sounds like either a vampire or werewolf psychodrama, which could either be a good or a bad thing.

On the other hand, if Nicole’s name had not been in the title, I would not have recognized her.

    • Kitten Mittons

Or vampire AND werewolf family drama? Bella goes for Jacob instead of Edward and Jacob knocks her up. Edward gets jealous and turns her into a vampire. Now it’s an odd couple-like scenario where natural enemies live together and raise a family. Hilarious hijinx ensue, especially when Edward moves in next door!

Coming to a theater near you next spring. The CW already bought the rights for the eventual sit-com adaptation.

      • demidaemon

HA! Then, Bella leaves Jacob for his hot younger brother and Jacob and Edward have to live together and raise the baby!

        • Kitten Mittons

And judging by the RPatz post from today, he’s definitely the Oscar of the two.

  • marlie

Cute outfit, but I’d get rid of the belt.

  • Drunken Housewife

This is one of my favorite books of all time. It’s wonderful: funny and snarky but also thought-provoking. What is art? What do parents owe their children? A brilliant brilliant book … adapted for the screen WITH HIDEOUS MISCASTING. No spoilers here, but she is COMPLETELY WRONG for any of the 3 female main characters, especially and mostly the one which I am guessing from the pictures she is playing. I feel like having a tantrum.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

Glancing at this, I seriously thought it was Anne Hathaway. Obviously did not read the title…..

  • SoAnnaPropriate

She’s doing the Tay-Tay claw! (sans empty purse) Is this a micro trend?

  • Adrianna Grężak

This is how I intend to look like when I put on similar clothes

  • elemspbee

I can see it, a lit’l bit of justine bateman. She’s def looks hep. love the boots.

  • aninsomniac

She’s producing it, thus the weird casting.

    • in a pickle

Sincere question- why is it weird casting? Is it that they don’t look enough alike to be siblings or that they don’t seem like they’d be convincing? They’re almost the same age, though she does look older I guess. I think I’m missing something that should be obvious.

      • aninsomniac

I think it’s because it seems (to me) to be so random. Jason Bateman is not the first, second, or tenth person I think of when I think Nicole Kidman’s movie brother. Although they’re both the same age, I think the siblings in the book are in their twenties, so they’re both much older. I daresay the roles of the parents actually seem more fun, so instead of playing the neurotic daughter, Kidman could have chosen the much more interesting role of the artsy mom.

  • ShaoLinKitten

I thought this was Anne Hathaway from the thumbnail.

  • JeanDNelson

  • Sophie

Love that collar on her. I don’t know if it’s the sunglasses or the hair colour, but she looks much younger than usual.

  • TheLaurenJean

I totally thought she was Anne Hathaway, but her pants couldn’t house a circus in each leg, so I should have known better.

  • LibKat

Big yes to the darker hair color. It looks so much better on her than blonde.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Best she’s looked in ages. Meanwhile… Why isn’t Justine Bateman playing Jason Bateman’s sister?

  • Starling

In those first two pics, I honestly thought it was Dakota Johnson.

    • Rebekah B

Haha whoops, I just said the same thing right after you did.

      • Starling

        Great minds think alike!

    • Melanie

i thought it was christina hendricks!!

  • Trishington

She hasn’t looked this good in ages. Kind of a Robin Hood vibe.

  • Ayesha King

Read the book. It’s pretty weird and is pretty insightful to the casting choices.

  • I read the book. Interesting casting. I’m intrigued. I think she’s dressed appropriately for the role, but if I’m remembering correctly, the character’s a bit younger than Nicole.

    • amanda lynn

oh great; does that mean more botox frozen face? 🙂

  • Mr. J.

Girl is making way too many movies….she’s turned into the Robert DeNiro of her day.
