Heidi Klum in Zadig & Voltaire at “America’s Got Talent” Event

Posted on August 21, 2014

We’re all for a gal wanting to get her disco-fabulous on. And we’re suckers for a black/gold combo. This should all be working for us.

It’s not.

Heidi’s style adage may be “Too much is never enough,” but it’s not ours. The eye simply doesn’t know where to go here. For such a tiny little dress, it’s a really busy one. We’re afraid that belt would have to go. Switch it out for a much simpler and thinner black one. Ditch the bracelets and the hideous earrings. Let’s see something like an onyx cocktail ring and some simple gold B-girl hoops.  We like the idea of a little black jacket, although it’s not a requirement. We do think it would finish out the look nicely, though. Because she’s kind of a yellow-blonde, all our fixes tend to position the gold as an accent color, rather than the main color.

  • I like the belt, but the earrings have got to go.

  • Thomas

It looks cheap for YSL. Maybe that’s why they did the ad in b&w.

    • CPK1

i think Heidi is wearing the Saint Laurent for Target version

      • TonyGo

or the Saint Laurent for Flea Market version.

      • Thomas

I was thinking Forever 21, but Target would work as well.

      • aurumgirl

I think all Saint Laurent now is the Target version. Or, it really wants to be a Target Saint Laurent collection. One of the two, because that’s where we are now.

    • makeityourself

      That’s possible.

I don’t think it looks cheap in color, though. Heidi just does not have the Saint Laurent aesthetic. And as TL said, she had styled this all wrong. First, there are no smiles on today’s Saint Laurent girls. Secondly, one must be thinner and younger than Heidi to pull it off. Jewelry is not part of the look either. Makeup is minimal. Hair should be slightly ratty. Heidi makes this look cheap by glamming it up, which is the exact opposite of how this dress should be worn.

      • Laughingworld

Only, the accessories are Saint Laurent. The dress is Zadig et Voltaire.

  • KinoEye

Y’know, I think it’s time to try out a new shade of blonde. It’s definitely fighting with all the gold in the outfit — especially the earrings — but I hadn’t noticed how lemon-y it was before. Ash blonde would work best for her, I think.

    • schadenfreudelicious

Agreed, I find this shade of blonde harsh and aging on her..

    • MM4321

I’ve been wanting her to lose that blonde for years! Ash would be ok if she insists on being so blonde. She looked her very best with light brown, imho.

  • SugarSnap108

Agree on all the changes, especially ditching those cheap-looking earrings. I’d also swap out the heavy shoes and add a little length to the hem .. and then try to convince Heidi to wear it.

  • JR Labrador

The new hostess of “Solid Gold”.

    • decormaven

Nailed it. Especially with those earrings. They’re almost the size of 45 rpm records.

    • sienna elm

She reminds me of the Golden Dream Barbie I had when I was little!

  • Man Dala

Those ear pendants are hideous. They look like they’ve been borrowed from the National Peruvian Museum of Inca Treasures.

    • Bernd

Agreed. I thought they look like spare parts from her grandfather-clock

      • Man Dala

        Those are the bracelets.

    • smayper

      I thought of hubcaps.

  • Karen Belgrad

    Shiny. check.
    Short. check.
    meh. check.

  • clatie

I actually think she looks pretty great. Perhaps she’s just worn me out over the years, but this looks just like it should. It’s short (not too), tight (not too) and shiny (very). Go on with your bad self, fraulein!

    • Imasewsure

Yes I love the outfit itself on her….and the shoes… it’s those earrings that have got to go before she gets the ok from me to fly her freak-flag

    • Sarah

I think it is too short. I would like the look (minus the Golden Spirograph earrings) if it was a few inches longer.

      • clatie

On anyone else, I would agree with you. But this is her schtick, and I am totally ok with it. 🙂

      • kimmeister

This is one rare case in which I actually wish it was a shorts romper, because DANG that is short for a dress.

        • Sarah

It really is. Not that she can’t pull it off with her enviable stems, but it is just too gynecological for me.

          • demidaemon

I agree. Two more inches would have made this near perfection.

  • CPK1

the bad makeup and witchy nails are not helping here

  • Kayceed

I realize the fabric is flashy, but can this garment get more basic? A sleeveless tunic with…well, that’s it actually.

  • Bernd

Hate the flat hair. Some volume would lower the sleaze factor

  • StellaZafella

    Same Vegas Keno runner…different casino.

  • Constant Reader

I could sign off on the belt if the skirt was a couple inches longer. The way it is now, the proportions are off. And yes, ditch the fortune-teller earrings and bracelets for something more streamlined. (Fortune tellers are really having a fashion moment, aren’t they?)

    • lunchcoma

That’s what I was thinking as well. I don’t mind the belt, but I think the skirt is too short. The jewelry is obviously terrible.

  • FibonacciSequins

“Hi, it’s me Heidi, just standing around with a couple of film reels hanging off my ears, shiny skirt cut up to my ass cheek. You know how I do.”

    • H2olovngrl

Those earrings killed it all. And seriously, I can see the curve in the back of her leg where her butt literally begins.

  • Judy_J

Oh, Heidi….will we be seeing you in short, tight, shiny outfits when you are in your golden years? I’m thinking yes, we will.

    • Constant Reader

Heidi will put the gold in golden years, no question.

  • Dino Bonačić

This for once is a dress for petite ladies.

  • susan6

She looks great, but I get a vague hint that even SHE wishes the dress were a wee bit longer. The earrings could be cool with a plainer dress, but not with this one.

  • AlisonHendryx

are those pointy nails becoming a thing? I would really not like long pointy nails to be a thing.

    • FibonacciSequins

They are a thing, and I hate them.

      • AlisonHendryx

Your comment breaks my heart and your screen name makes my week. My feelings are very confused now.

        • FibonacciSequins

          Oh no!

          • AlisonHendryx

No, its a good thing! Without your witty name, I would sink into a horrid depression that pointy witch nails are “a thing now.”

          • FibonacciSequins

I saw a commercial yesterday where a woman with those pointy nails used one of them to stir her cocktail. I don’t even know what the commercial was for. I was completely mesmerized by her nail, and wondering whether she would use it to pierce the maraschino cherry. Which, of course, she did. And then ate it.

Like, now we have to live in a world where people have talons and use them to spear and eat their food. Nope.

          • Sarah

It was a VERY STRANGE commercial for Southern Comfort, which skeeved me out for the 1. Nails 2. Cherry Piercing with said nail 3. Facial expression of said nail possessor, 4. Seeming discordancy between nail possessor and the client base of actual SoCo drinkers, and 5. Random frat dude in sleazy bar gazing at strange cherry piercer.

          • FibonacciSequins

Yes! Same thoughts. It was disturbing.

          • alyce1213

Oof – Little Red Riding Hood.

          • Sarah

            Extremely Oof.

          • formerlyAnon

            That’s . . . very strange, indeed.

          • decormaven

Praise the heavens I have ditched my cable plan. I don’t ever need to see that.

  • Stubenville

A quarter inch shorter and the world would be her gynecologist.

    • Note how she seems to be holding the dress down in some photos – Good Lawd if that thing should ride up.

    • MartyBellerMask

Who designs for Voltaire & Zadig, Zulema?

  • ChelseaNH

Funny, my first thought was “Her hair clashes.” Maybe if she pulled it up/back. But those earrings are too much, regardless. That last picture, where you can’t see them, looks so much better.

  • Imasewsure

Keep the outfit and the plain black pumps and bury everything else. That tacky jewelry is probably part of Heidi’s own (QVC) collection unfortunately… ugh

  • numenah

That last shot–whoa. Has her smile always been that predatory?

  • luludexter

Yes this wouldn’t have definitely benefited from lower key accessories, esp those earrings! Yikes!

  • KateShouldBeWorking

Woah! Heidi found something too short even for her! Next it’ll rain frogs.

  • Paula Pertile

jesus christ, can that be any shorter?

  • I finally removed all the belts that came with purchase on my dresses and hung them up in one area in the (new, spacious, makes me feel like a rich lady) closet. The result has been seeing new dimensions to my wardrobe.

Plus, gold earrings by Ronco. They look like rotisserie wheels laid in gold glitter.

    • FibonacciSequins

      Congratulations on your spacious closet!

      • kimmeister

Is there anything better in life than a spacious closet? Maybe, but I’m hard-pressed to think of one.

    • decormaven

Upvote for the Ronco mention. Now those were some cheesy commercials…

      • My favorite was when the same commercial was on multiple channels and were a half second off and I’d turn to every channel that the commercial was on.

        …I was a lonely child.

        • decormaven

I am off to YouTube some classic Ronco commercials now. Almost as good as KTel Records.

  • Lilithcat

    Short? √
    Tight? √
    Shiny? √

    Never change, Heidi!

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

      Don’t worry, she won’t.

  • Daisy Walker

Short, tight and shiny is no way to go through life, gurl.

  • Yoshio

She makes me smile just being her tacky ass self. I wouldn’t change a thing.

    • Mr. J.

Yes. Thank you for saying this.

  • sagecreek

Ugh. I kind of hate this phrase, but I’m going to use it anyway — mutton dressed as lamb. Ugly, cheap, shiny lamb.

  • The earrings were a bridge too far.

  • GillianHolroyd

She’s worn more than a few short, tight, and shiny dresses that were less than flattering but I think this one works.

  • Jacob Bowen

The big belt would be fine if it didn’t have the gold accents on it, but as is, it needs to go. Those earrings look plastic, and are WAY too busy, and she needs something smaller and gold, or bigger and black.

  • frannyprof

So short! I know the Klumster likes tight, short, and shiny, but this is way too short.

  • I have a dress like this – the sequins on mine are reversible, with black on one side and gold on the other, and you just swipe your hands over it to change the design. I’d never bother with a belt on it though. I think the gold of this dress clashes with her hair.

The earrings look like gold-spray-painted and bedazzled slices of lotus root.

  • MilaXX

Lose the earrings, remove all the bracelets except 1 or 2, swap the belt for a skinny black belt.

  • Inspector_Gidget

I’m ready for my OBGYN close-up, Dr. DeMille!

  • Myra Amler

Use the Aldo Accessory wall carefully

  • Sherilyne Cox

I wonder if there are any photos of Ms. Klum exiting the limo? I can’t imagine how she managed to sit in that frock.

  • Mothra

those shoes are screaming “draaaaag queeeeen!” to me.

  • Adrianna Grężak

The problem is she’s wearing a shirt. And the belt is very 2009.

  • She looks like a Bratz doll.

  • ktr33

what about another 1.5 inches of skirt?

  • kimmeister

I’d also remove the bucket of body glitter she has slathered on her legs. Seriously, your dress and every accessory are all shiny, did you need your legs to do so too?

  • understateddiva

I kind of want her to be my crazy aunt. But I don’t think that’s what she was going for, here.

  • MissAmynae

You know what? If this was shorts- like a romper type thing- it would be decently cute. Put a thinner belt, change the earrings, and it could be really cute.

    But sadly, it’s not.

  • livesarah

Doesn’t go with her lank, brassy hair. The earrings might work on someone else ( short hair?). The dress would probably do okay as a shift, and her legs are amazing.

  • Julie Ann

Those earrings really bring out the brassy tones in her hair. Not good.

  • Robert Gilley

isn’t she getting a little “mature” for this look?

  • Qitkat

Let’s have a little fun with math, shall we?

    TLO/BK Theorem #1:
If the square root of the hypotenuse of the length of a hemline equals the circumference of the cosine of the algorithm of the neckline minus the glitter factor to the power of infinity, the answer will always be Heidi Klum.
This equation is expressed thusly: HK=(STS)

    • demidaemon

Love it! Fashion Trigonometry. We shall call this, the Qitkathorean Theorem.

      • Qitkat

  • marlie

I’m so distracted by those earrings that I can’t even judge the rest of the outfit. HAH. Yes I can… The earrings look really, really cheap, but get rid of most of the bracelets and I could be ok with the rest of the outfit as-is (though I agree that a narrow belt would be even better).

  • demidaemon

Man, this is just an iconic Heidi dress, no? Short, tight, and shiny, which is probably part of the reason it isn’t working all that well. However, I bet it looked good behind the judging desk all night.

    • LJCdoc

Yeah, I was just thinking that this is probably in the dictionary under “Heidi’s wheelhouse”.

  • Dagney

oh lord. does she ever NOT look skanky and cheap?

  • dschubba

    T’was accessories killed the look.

  • LambeeBaby

It looks like one of the dresses from the unconventional challenge. One of the 3 made out of film reels.

  • Ruby_Wednesday

I think I saw those earrings at Burlington Coat Factory for 4.99

  • Diane Iafrate

The earrings are regrettable. How are her earlobes not touching the floor?
I think a little length could have helped and definitely ditch that belt

  • bringbackbeatles

Am I missing something? Where does it show the model wearing a jacket?

  • quiltrx

Ew. It’s a whole lot of too much.

  • bringbackbeatles

Oh, I almost forgot. I don’t really have a problem with the dress itself, other than it could be a tad longer to improve the proportions and make it easier to sit and move around in. I hate the belt. She loves a big belt, but I don’t think all the body con dresses she wears necessarily need a belt at all and certainly not these really wide belts. A tight short dress with a big belt like that just becomes all belt. It either needed to be a skinny belt or no belt at all. I like the earrings, but I agree about losing the bracelets and going with an onyx cocktail ring. Also like the idea of a black jacket if it’s the right one.

  • Susan Velazquez

The earrings look like the cheap ones I would find at the 99 cents store that would turn your ears green

  • kaybee

Am I missing the black jacket on the model???

But anyway, I hate everything. The earrings, the belt, the shoes…

Time to quit the actual red carpet and do a Sidewalk tour since her casual outfits are usually on point.

  • TerryMarie

No belt, no bracelets, no earrings and an inch or two added to the hem and she’d look smashing. Though I agree with those who suggest she tone down the blonde hair, too.

  • Modeniete

She looks like she belongs in the British Museum.
    As an exhibit.

  • AndieJay

She’d better hope she doesn’t drop anything. Or have to sit down.

  • yllas

I don’t like the shoes, or the belt. Mutton dressed as lamb seems to be the theme. I think she is just about a year or three too old for this, but she is in denial. Oh, she knows way down inside, but the urge to show off those legs, “I still got it! I still got it!” overrides that little voice. But. She certainly looks better than I ever did in a black and gold sequin dress, and even if she is a bit too old, she still gots it!

  • Yes to a thin black belt, and I’d even let her keep the bangles if she got a couple in with a bit of lapis in them. And switch out those hideous earrings for a simple pair of Van Cleef Alhambra.

  • The soundtrack to this photo is Cher’s “Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves”.

  • I really like the dress on the model. I think any belt just shorten a dress that’s already gyno-short. Just leave it be. Also like the idea of tough boots with it, while definitely not Heidi’s style, they work so much better than those Minnie Mouse pumps. Too much earring, too many bracelets and too much gold altogether. I like the clunkier silver bracelets on the model, though I would never have thought of silver on my own, with this.

  • Little_Olive

I don’t think that dress is meant to be worn with any belts, but to hang loose. She is tall and thin, she can do it. I’m not sure that she should, though.

  • cocohall

I long to know what her childhood was like. Dolly Parton talks about being so poor that she thought that the local hooker looked glamorous and she basically copied that look when she was older. What happened to kleine Heidi? What accounts for her consistently awful and borderline tacky taste? (Those earrings aren’t even borderline.) Is she an insomniac? Up all night ordering shit from QVC?

  • guest2visits

……but then she wouldn’t look like a Vegas showgirl/hostess. She’s probably pulling along a spotlight on wheels, tied to her ankle just to make sure she reflects into the upper reaches of space. Even her skin is covered in sparkly spray.

  • Maria

Why are the nails so pointy?

    • formerlyAnon

Sadly, it is now a Thing.

  • Columbinia

Gorgeous woman, tacky look. The fun part is that she’s sort of a one-woman late-Sixties re-enactor when it comes to fashion.

  • Judih1

The dark roots in her hair drive me crazy. As does her taste in clothes

  • telling that the dress looks kinda adorable on the little girl modeling it (on her way to Coachella?) and ridiculous on Heidi.

  • E. D.

Too short and I hate the manicure.
