Nina Dobrev in Versace at the Atelier Versace Fall 2014 Show

Posted on July 07, 2014

For such a tiny little dress, it sure does pack in a lot of design elements, yes?

Unfortunately, almost all of those design elements are tacky. We think the epaulets were probably the bridge too far for us. Even when we mentally edit them out, however, we’re still stuck with a dress that looks like wallpaper in a Chinese restaurant.

And who pinned that hem? What did she use, a staple gun?

Now I’m going to have Sgt Pepper’s stuck in my head all afternoon….

    • smayper

YES! Just what I was thinking.

    • altermyego

And that’s not a bad thing. At least that makes this over-wrought dress worth something.

You must learn to edit dahlink.

  • NMMagpie

That’s a lotta look and not enough good in it.

    • Carleenml

it’s ridic. it’s too small for the entire word. I don’t need all those letters.

    • conniemd

A lotta look at the upper thighs both front and rear to be sure.

      • NMMagpie

  • clatie

also so damn tight – those buttons are going to kill someone when they blow.

    • kimmeister

Fortunately, they’re not actually holding any pieces of the garment together.

  • Shawn EH

She’s so pretty, and she so loves Chinese waitress dresses, but this one would be fine with just the wallpaper patterns. And it still would have looked totally Versace. They love to over-theme.

  • The wallpaper in my chinese restaurant is *much* classier than this. 😉

Plus they have a really gorgeous charcoal horse drawing, which takes the wallpaper to a totally higher level.

I think this dress could have been greatly improved if she was carrying a charcoal horse drawing. I’m just saying. 🙂

    • Carleenml

somewhere out there should be a blog devoted to “tasteful Chinese restaurant wallpaper” because it always gets such a bad rap.

    • OffToSeeHim

You have a Chinese restaurant? A real one? I just moved to NC and haven’t tasted Chinese food in a year and a half. Where is it?

      • You’ll have to travel a long way, it is in Australia. 🙂 It isn’t mine personally but we go there once a week.

      • martha

Where in NC? There are some good places in the larger cities.

    • Danielle

Anything is better than the vaginal flowers this print is currently sporting.

  • When a dress is so snug that it rides up in the front of the crotchal zone, its Too Darned Tight!

    • L’Anne

In the words of Cole Porter: Its too darn tight, Its too darn tight. Can’t sit down, in a dressy so tight. The hem looks worse on a dressy so tight. The boobs do cry, in a dressy so tight.

    • 3boysful

I was just coming on to say design elements are not all that dress is “packing in.” I might reevaluate if it actually fit.

    • Boulderista

Even on the model the dress appears to be riding up in the crotchal zone – maybe the shape of the hemline is deliberate?

    • VioletFem

That design element is also present when the model is wearing it. It looks like that is the intended affect, albeit it terrible one.

    • Kristin McNamara

RIght on. And the crotchal situation isn’t helped any by the fact that the stupid symmetric design [more than] somewhat resembles the general shape of one’s hip bones and male genitalia. (I HATE when designers use symmetric patterns like this, as I tend to always see inappropriate things in those Rorschach tests….) Does nobody else see that? I know, I know… #onceyouseeityoucantunseeit

    • DebbieLovesShoes

“Crotchal zone” = making a mental note to use that turn o’ phrase! Ha.

  • Dino Bonačić

    Awful. Truly awful.

I’m talking about the 3/4-side-pose. And the dress is tacky as sh*t.

  • Glam Dixie

I think the dress is cute, I don’t mind anything but the fact that it’s a size too small. WTF people, it’s not that hard to get a size that fits you.

  • Jessica Freeman

If this was just navy or red, no print at all, I think I would love it. The way it is, is just all bad.

  • When you find yourself wondering if somebody’s hair got caught in the chain fringe coming off her epaulets, you know you’re looking at a winner.

  • Emily Smith

    Oh dear that’s short.

  • PeggyOC

Once you’ve said Versace, I don’t think you need to say tacky. It’s kind of a given. That said, lose the military button thing and the epaulets and this would only be a too-tight, questionably patterned dress on another starlet.

  • nannypoo

It’s bad, all of it. I’m not rich and I buy my own clothes, and I can do better than this.

  • Laurie Bergman

Like the colors in the dress pattern and her makeup, but design elements aren’t the only things packed in…her girls are, too!

  • Danielle

I almost want to call this dress For Models Only. It’s giving Nina a very small pooch where she definitely doesn’t have one.

  • NBG

I think as a general rule, you should say no to epaulets unless you are a Disney Prince.

    • sienna elm

      or Michael Jackson. 🙂

  • Introspective

unquestionable horrible. and evocative of $10 store fashions. fail versace.

  • Grumpy Girl

Nina herself is looking tired here. Is it the makeup being too monochrome? Or the lack of lipcolor? Her face just looks older than I am used to seeing her (realizing that she may have gotten older, so trying to be delicate here).

The dress, as others have pointed out, is just too short and too tight to be as flattering as it could be on someone with Nina’s physique.

  • Gatto Nero

I like the boots on the model.
    That’s all I got.

  • LadyCelia

I guess you could call it design. Looks to me like someone ate a look book and then regurgitated it.

  • KinoEye

This dress doesn’t know what it wants to be when it grows up. Evening wear for ladies in the Chinese military, perhaps. But certainly not a dress for Miss Nina, or most other humans.

  • MilaXX

My biggest gripe is it’s too tight on her. Then we have the epaulets that are just plain silly and the buttons that I suspect are an attempt to disguise the fact that this is just a basic mini.

  • MissusBee

Tsarist Russia, interpreted in the form of go-go dancing.

    To be followed by

    The Ottoman Empire Boogaloo

    Ancient Rome: The Twerk Years

    • Introspective

this snark is the work of a shady & well read historian. youre a gal after my own heart!

    • demidaemon

I assume Ancient Rome: The Twerk years has Miley Cyrus in a nearly naked toga concoction.

  • Aidan B

Oof. This is bad. Nina usually looks very polished, so that makes it even worse. She looks rightly ticked about it, too.

  • Nika E

Gawd Versace is tacky and cheap.

  • Anna

If anyone could pull that dress off, I would think Nina would be the one – but it’s an ugly ass dress. Ass ugly.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

It’s so ugly it could be a Stella.

      • Anna

YES! It does have that craft show vibe to it.

  • Anna

This is beyond Chinese restaurant wallpaper. This is more like something you see hanging in a souvenir stall in Chinatown next to some knockoff Coach bags.

    • Danielle

Knockoff Coach bags are the worst kind of knockoffs. Urgh.

  • uprightcitizen

“The Music Man” was on TCM yesterday. And this appears to be an homage to both the costumes AND the sets.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

      I LOVE that movie. 🙂

  • RescueMe23

Should I know who she is? There are so many tacky celebs I get lost.

    • conniemd

Lead actress in “The Vampire Diaries” on CW.

  • Denise Rambo

I recently saw a list of cultural references made popular by “Seinfeld” and that first picture is the definition of “man hands”. Not good at all.

    • OMG how did I not spot that before now? Great catch!

Her hands look so normally sized when not near her head.. 🙂

    • Wink

In the first pic, her arm and hand remind me of Popeye the Sailor!

  • bassfemme

This has Stella all over it, with the aforementioned Sgt Pepper epaulets and faux double breastedness. Layers of fug.

  • another_laura

That is just a stupid hem line, it looks like a mistake. And fringe, on top of every darned other thing? yikes. The deep red, white and blue is totally working for me and I’ll even take the buttons down the front, but you’ve got to let it out an inch, give an even hem, and rip off those lame epauletts and fringe. Of course, then it’s kind of a simple little dress and nobody would comment on it …..

  • Nina usually dresses so well, but this is a fail. Also, she has a completely amazing body, but she needs to go up a size here.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I really don’t think it is a very good idea to make your own band costume. Just go with what your school gives you.

  • belfebe

And she needed to go a size up.

  • suzq

Sargent Pepper just sat on Eleanor Rigby’s couch.

  • alyce1213

If this were a sheath with just the main navy/red print, without any junk, well-cut and structured like it is, in the right size, I might like it.
    That’s too many ifs.

    • Synnae

I’m with you totally, without extra junk, in right size, and properly hemmed I think this is actually an ok dress. That’s a lot of alteration for such an expensive item…

  • d4divine

Donatella treats design elements like glitter at a circuit party.

    • demidaemon

      Or is that crack?

      • d4divine

  • marlie

The epaulettes are REALLY what push this dress over the line. And even on teeny, tiny Nina, this dress looks too tight.

  • OffToSeeHim

Who *is* this girl? It’s making me cranky that all the twenty-something lady-stars are starting to blur together for me. I can only remember a few of the names, which makes me feel like I’m getting old.

  • crash1212

This is a fringed epaulet too far for me. Other than that, I kind of like it. I wonder how she cut her leg shaving or something.

  • ThaliaMenninger

So she has a Little Wooden Soldier act at the strip club?

  • Sara Brams-Miller

    too tight. Too everything.

  • lorepottter

It is me, or Nina had a nose job?

  • kimmeister

I was fully expecting this to be a Stella McCartney. But, she certainly doesn’t have the monopoly on tacky.

  • Trish Austad

Yeah, I especially love the band-aid on her leg. Stay classy, girl.

  • demidaemon

You know, I weirdly kind of like this. It would certainly be better without the epaulets, though.

  • DesertDweller79

In addition to being tacky and overdesigned, it is also way too small in every direction.

  • Jacob Bowen

If she had kept with ONLY the navy/red colored fabric, deleted the buttons and scrapped the sleeves I MAYBE could see past the hem/hem-length. BUT, that’s TOO MANY CHANGES!

  • Granny panties

I usually love looking at nina, she has such a doll face , luscious hair and beautiful slim curves, but this dress is ugly and too tight.

  • livesarah

Wallpaper in a Chinese restaurant… Nailed it again. What a mess.

  • quiltrx

I was having a hard time seeing it right, the shitty wavy hem kept sucking my eyes back to it.
I think you can either be Michael Jackson up top OR use that fabric…not both.
I think the print is really pretty, but I think it would be so much better rendered in something flowing instead of something so sucking-tight.

  • Columbinia

Dressed for burlesque. Hand the lady some opera gloves.
