Maggie Gyllenhaal in Vionnet on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart”

Posted on July 31, 2014

You know? On someone else, we might think this was boring or maybe even a little tricky to pull off, but it answers so many of Maggie’s style needs that we find ourselves loving it.

She needs sleek and a little pre-War retro to serve her best. She also does well with really vibrant colors and slightly unusual flourishes, like those sleeves. And we like that both the shoes and the earrings stand out enough to punctuate the look, but are both simple and classic, without any fussiness. Sure, it’s a little tight across the front and the bust doesn’t fit so well, but the shape and the style are so wonderful for her that we can’t —

Oh, DAMMIT.

Nevermind.

I saw the cropped picture and assumed she was joining the cast of OITNB (before reading the headline).

        • Fitzperry

          Exactly my reaction.

    • RussellH88

So in theory someone could just run up behind her, unzip her, and she’d be ass-out in a few seconds?

How can someone place that much trust in humanity?

i always think the same thing when i see girls with microminis sitting on subway seats with their bare asses

        • Qitkat

Shudder :( I find it hard to believe this is a real thing, but several times it has been mentioned on this blog.

I feel like that guy who put his head up America Ferrara’s dress would do something like that. Hopefully he’s banned from celebrity events for life.

      • Lisalady161

You are on fire today, Russel kitten!

      • conniemd

I posted the same thing, the way that low back zip was just hanging there, I had visions of someone doing exactly that to her.

      • Munchkn

I was watching an old segment of “I’ve Got A Secret” last night on youtube. Panelist Betsy Palmer’s zipper popped during the question period! Someone came to Betsy’s rescue with a safety pin. I don’t remember what the secret was.

    • Karen Belgrad

      Dammit? That’s some quality T-LO editing… I was expecting a scroll-down “For Fuck’s Sake!”

    • In_Stitches

Bahahahaha, poor Maggie. She got half right, and at least it’s the front half.

      • MoHub

I was impressed when I saw The Daiily Show, but I didn’t see the unfortunate back view.

        • Gatto Nero

Maybe she chose this dress knowing that the back wouldn’t be visible on camera.

          • MoHub

Possibly. I just know I was shocked when I saw the back on this site.

    • colleenjanel

I was so prepared to like this. It’s a skotch tight, but it’s a nice look for her. Simple with just enough interest in an unusual color. Then she had to turn around and screw everything up!

      • Monabel

        TWO skotches.

    • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

The zip absolutely ruins that dress.

      • Rhonda Shore

it’s a shame, from the front it was fantastic. So few people can pull off orange.

      • StellaZafella

So does the fact that the top/sleeves are cut one piece like a crafter’s kaftan so when the fitting comes into play you get the unfortunate underarm folds…I think there are better ways to execute a bell sleeve than simply cutting a right angle from the bodice to the cuff.

        • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

When you look at the difference between the dress on the model, and then on her, its clear the issue is one of its being WAY too tight really. It wasn’t designed to fit as she is wearing it. In the context of the model shot the cut is fine.

      • Gatto Nero

That ugly stripe and the buckling are tragic.

      • Sherilyne Cox

Lurve the flattering front…..the freakish behind looks like a wet suit.

    • mommyca

I’m sorry, but I like it… (although the fit in the back should be better). I think she is having a Secretary moment :-)

      • Denise Alden

God, I loved that movie! :)

        • mommyca

          Me too! I think I have to re-watch it…

          • Heather

It’s the reason that James Spader is on my ‘celebrities I have free license to have sex with (not that it will actually happen)’ list.

    • ashtangajunkie

      That zipper offends me.

      • Kikishua

        That zipper offends the WORLD.

    • Gatto Nero

What a shame. This is perfection from the front.

    • hughman

It’s like a prisoner outfit on Real Housewives Island.

      • rh33

Proportions are too normal. Lose about 8 inches to the hem, add 8 inches to the bosom and you got RHI,

    • Bonnie Blue

I didn’t think the front was TOO bad and then I saw the giant zipper and the weird way the sleeves make folds on the back of the dress, it looks very odd. I like her hair and her earrings. She always reminds me of a cross between a young Claudette Colbert and young Jane Wyman. She looks like she is from a different era (I mean this as a compliment).

      • kimmeister

Yeah, those big folds from the sleeves in the back look like when people who lose weight very quickly have excess skin.

      • Qitkat

I like this comparison, I can totally see it now.

    • Judy_S

Just watched the show and I was admiring her in that dress. She looked great, and she looks better moving than in a photo.
      No back view, thank heavens.

      • leahpapa

Haven’t seen the show yet but saw some stills from “The Honorable Woman,” and that character’s wardrobe really suits her – a little off-beat but chic, strong silhouettes and colors.

    • Kent Roby

The exposed zipper is such a needle scratch! Why oh why do designers continue to place them, when they were so overdone (rarely to good effect) several years ago?

      • Glam Dixie

Yes, didn’t these monstrosities go out of style a while ago? Someone isn’t reading their memos.

      • Gatto Nero

And it’s not just the visual blight of that monster stripe down the back of a garment. These huge zippers invariably buckle, completely ruining the line and drape.

        • Glam Dixie

I don’t even know how it is buckling so badly when it is obviously WAY too tight. Shouldn’t that at least, make it lay flat?

          • Gatto Nero

Not necessarily. The cut of the dress and the tight fit (and fabic pulling) are part of the problem — but it’s also that the zipper is so stiff compared to the fabric that it emphasizes the puckering/folding that’s already there..

    • muelonil

      Orange is the new black.

    • @Biting Panda

      Godamnexposedzippersarghhhhhh!

    • Anna

I don’t know. Is it bad that after Kristen Bell’s dress, I’m kind of glad there’s a zipper?

I still can only really look at it from the front.

    • kimmeister

I don’t think this is a great shape for her, even from the front. She is slim-hipped as it is, and then those gigantic sleeves make her look really top heavy compared to those slim hips. The volume of the sleeves might have worked better in a drapier fabric so they didn’t just stick out like origami pieces.

      • Qitkat

I’ll go even farther and say this is a very difficult silhouette for anyone, of any size. Dolman sleeves are just not that flattering IMO.

    • housefulofboys

Is that a scroll-around fug? Too bad because I really like the idea from the front for Maggie.

    • MilaXX

I’ll still give it to her. She definitely seems to have gotten a stylist who gets her. She hasn’t looked like a bag lady in months. I am aware that clothes should look good all the way around, but this worked perfectly on the show so I’m calling it a success.

    • Kitten Mittons

The color looks great on her, and her hair and makeup are lovely. The zipper is unfortunate, but the fit bothers me more. The way the sleeves are causing weird fabric puffs in the back and the front make me wish it was fitted more loosely, like on the model.

If the fit were perfection, I could deal with the (totally impractical and frighteningly illogical) zipper.

Dammit all to hell, Sample Sizes.

    • fashionfootie

This dress kind of reminds me of the Prada SS 2011 collection. Well except for the exposed zipper.

    • joancarol

Kabuki in the front, garment bag in the back.

    • cwade1211

Even from the front, the fabric just looks stiff and uncomfortable to me.

    • TinyDynamo

I absolutely loved the cut, color, and shape until the back. I gasped in horror. That is appalling. I am bummed out, and I’m blaming you, Vionnet. Ugh.

    • http://fibonaccisequins.storenvy.com/ Danielle

      I can’t.

    • j_am

      Down with the visible zipper!!!

    • another_laura

Just awful from the back. What a shame.

    • Nimith

It’s nearly 3 am and I’m cackling like a mad man. Thank you, and my neighbours hate you.

    • Shawn EH

I still like it, but I’m going to pretend she’s always standing against a wall.

    • Qitkat

      I love a good scroll-down belly laugh!

    • SewingSiren

Maybe they had to split it up the back for some editorial they were doing …. and they they tried to repair it for Maggie to wear …… that’s really all I can come up with as an excuse.

    • CanIbeFrank

No. No no no. Here’s why:
      1) when I first saw the pic in my FB feed, I thought it was a promo shot for “Orange is the New Black.” Not kidding. (And I LOVE orange.)
      2) by tightening the bodice, all the proportions are off. On the model, the big sleeves work with the loose fit. When she made the torso fitted, it got real awkward, real fast.
      4) it actually sticks up and floats over her shoulders in every picture. You know the bodice is too tight when your dress defies gravity.
      3) ill-fitting in the back, plus the zipper. Yikes.

Try again, honey. Do orange, but a different dress. Please.

    • Neil

Is that semen hanging from her ears, Something About Mary style?

    • nannypoo

I’m going to ignore the back and the sleeves and call it cute. I am also impressed by her choice of shoes. While everyone else teeters around on heels twice as high as these, she actually looks comfortable.

    • Janet B

Just when I thought those zippers were gone for ever.

    • Nicole

That zipper is one of the big disappointments of 2014

    • msdamselfly

Too bad. from the front it looks great but the back looks like a garment bag.

    • Sam Smith

I wish this was just a little bit bigger.

    • PeggyOC

      Orange is the new Ack!

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

I kind of wish she’d pencil in her brows just a little. I have really full brows and I’ve been deepening them with pencil just to get the fuller look (I love full brows ala young Brooke Shields and some of the new models around), and I feel like, especially with brown hair, she needs just a little more contrast on her face to flatter her features better.
Love the color and style of the dress (from the front), wish the back wasn’t so shapeless and horrific.

    • conniemd

Looking at her standing at the rail, I can’t help but imagining someone pranking her by sneaking up behind and unzipping the bottom zipper.

    • Jessica O’Connell

Honestly, I’m just glad she’s not wearing a muumuu this time. I’m shocked to find that she has such a great body considering how much she seems to wear her “I’m feeling really bloated today” clothes.

Though that zipper is REALLY dumb.

    • Lex

From the front, she looks better than the model. I love the tighter fit. From the back? Whoa… that’s cray cray.

    • teensmom99

      Tailoring!

    • AmeliaEve

Completely unrelated to that horror dress, when I glanced at the thumbnail I totally thought she was a younger Julie Andrews. Whoa.

    • Julie Parr

She looked amazing in it on TV.

    • Tricia

No, I’ll admit, I love that dress. Even the wonky zipper back.

    • Fuchsiaforever

Exquisite in the front; HOT MESS in the back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don’t even understand what I’m looking at on Photo #5 (top to bottom)….

    • e jerry powell

      The matchy lip….

    • Trishington

With her oomph and personality, she could rock a potato sack. Love her! Oh wait, this is a potato sack. Which proves my point.

    • crash1212

What a shame. I was TOTALLY on board with this look….until….why…WHY Vionnet?! Why would you f**k up a perfectly cute dress with that horrendous zipper? First thing I’d do is take that thing to a seamstress and have a zipper-ectomy performed toot sweet. Then is would be perfect.

    • PastryGoddess

      turn around fug?

    • evave2

That is one bizarro zipper in the back. So this is one case we can rag on the designer, not the wearer, because the earring and shoes are nice counterpoint but that bizarro zipper is just bizarro. Why did designer do that to a perfectly nice dress? You know, most of the time a dress will look better in the back than in the front (if there is a disparity at all), but this is proof in the pudding that the opposite can be true.

She does really seem to like clothes that make me go HUH a lot.

    • Mr. J.

Whatever happy pills that lady is taking….I WANT SOME….

    • deech_sea

Ditto on the back, but she does look positively radiant, so who cares? Doesn’t that dress hurt when you sit down, though?

    • demidaemon

I liked it until I got to the back. :(

    • FibonacciSequins

That back is so ugly! I hate that exposed zippers are trendy now. I’m convinced designers pushed it on us because they’re cheaper to manufacture than zippers covered with fabric, and I feel cheated.

Maggie does look great in this dress from the front and side. Sleek/retro is her jam.

    • LadyVimes

Keep your back to the wall, Mags!

    • marlie

If she hadn’t turned around, I would have given her a WERQ for this. From the front, this dress is outstanding on her.

    • enchanted216

Just no. It does not fit, and it looks ridiculous. Sick if her.

    • Aurumgirl

I am beginning to think of her the way you both think of Christina Hendricks. I wish to gods that Maggie would get the people who do the wardrobe for The Honourable Woman to work for her off set, as her stylists. She looks amazing in everything in that role. (And it’s a very good show, too).

    • Columbinia

It’s one thing to put a big, brash Mod zipper down a dress. It’s quite another when the zipper is a rippling, twisting ugly mess.

    • Monica De Leon

I love it from the front…but long pancake ass from the back. Mmm…no thank you.

    • Sophie

My first thought was prison uniform. Then I liked it, especially with the earrings. Then she turned around, and there was an exposed zip and the sleeves looked weird. I am disappointed.

    • Mim McDonald

Given her amazing performance in The Honourable Woman (don’t know if/when that’ll be shown in the US; it’s on BBC2 at the mo), Maggie can currently do no wrong in my eyes. She can wear all the fugly zips she likes for at least the next six months…

    • Clash D

I was going to applaude but then I scrolled down and saw that zipper and thought “…craps”.

    • ChaquitaPhilly

BUT…you never way the back with the dreaded zipper on TV. So it WORKED!

    • MannahattaMamma

Plus when she sits, isn’t that zipper just going to go “ziiiip” all the way up? and THAT will be TVawkard, methinks.

    • guest2visits

Had immediate dislike of the earrings on tv…. but the orange works well on her, and face and hair so pretty!

I loved it until you showed us that stupid zipper!

    • Raspberry2012

She looked awesome! I watched TDS and as soon as she walked out, I thought of TLo!

    • matildarf

At first I was like “uggg” then I was like scroll down “CUTE!” then I was like “ugg”. When is the exposed zipper going to die? This looks like my old drysuit for scuba diving. Overall she looks really great, from the front.

    • DebbieLovesShoes

Oooo, I DO love that color on her, though. Hard to wear and it looks wonderful on her.
