Kerry Washington in Sportmax at the Women In Film Crystal + Lucy Awards

Posted on June 12, 2014

It’s been too long since Miss Kerry has graced our bitchy shores. Let’s judge her.

We don’t blame any postpartum woman for wanting to eschew belts for a while, but this dress could really use one. It’s an eye-catching little frock, but we’re not totally in love with it. The waist sits high and the hips flare out slightly. You combine that with a sloping shoulder and it really changes the shape of the body. Paint splatter prints tend to work best, to our way of thinking, when a little restraint is employed. This is just too much and too distracting. And the shoes, which look fun in black, go totally clown in red. And then she had to go match her lipstick to them, which makes our eyelids twitch furiously. And isn’t the clutch kind of random?

We sound more critical than we mean to. It’s definitely a head-turning kind of look. We’re just not convinced that it’s all working to her benefit.

      It needs that belt.

It’s like Olivia Pope without a glass of wine.

      • StillGary

If Olivia goes on the wagon, I’m not watching anymore.

        • RussellH88

You can actually buy those wine glasses. I know, because of course.

    • Glam Dixie

Is there a dress? All I saw when I scrolled down were Lips and Shoes. My god, that orange!

      • Rhonda Shore

I really don’t like that lipstick on her…and the shoes. With loud prints, one must use restraint when accessorizing. Orange is not restraint. And yes to a belt, or a different dress.

        • Raspberry2012

The lipstick was the first wrong thing I noticed. That shade is out of control!

          • brianamonopeia

Especially for her skin tone. It makes her look pinkish-orange…

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

She’s had the baby then? Needs the belt, or at least *a* belt, and I think this is a fun way to do matchy shoes. Given some of her questionable maternity outfits I think she looks great.

      • KinoEye

At last, she finally spawned. It felt like she was pregnant for ages.

        • Beth513

I had my baby a few days before her. Pregnancy lasts literal ages. There is no way I’d be out at an event already! I’m lucky to shower and get out of my jammies.

    • sugarkane105

The shoes read orange to me? They’re my favorite part of the outfit.

    • Noah

      Girl, that’s not your neckline.

      • Man Dala

I agree. I know it’s not nice to say this about a lady who is breastfeeding, but she seems to be smuggling a breast pump under her armpit.

    • @Biting Panda

Bless her. I appreciate what she was going for, but this is a case of what she sees in the mirror, is not what we see in pics.

    • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

So far this seems to be Lousy Fit Day. The bodice of Kerry’s dress is too long for her and needs about a half an inch taken off at the waistline. It would do wonders.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I’d also lop off a inch or so from that sheer hem, and do a less wide V in the bodice.

        • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

See, if the bodice fit properly top to bottom it wouldn’t gap as it does. Plus like most of the stars, Ms Kerry has more up top than your average runway model. I’d be inclined to itch the sheer hem entirely.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

You’re absolutely correct about Ms. Kerry having more on top than the runway models, and, of course, about proper fit, That seems like a no-brainer to me, but then I don’t know how the loaning of designer duds works, and how much altering they’ll willing to do. You would think that they’d want viewers to see a ladystar wearing their clothes and think-hey, I’d like that, rather than WTF?

            • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

It’s a source of continual amazement to me that designers whose work often gets into 5 figures would permit them to be seen looking badly fitted.

            • bitchybitchybitchy

I share your amazement;it simply doesn’t make sense for these clothes to be worn without proper fitting.

            • conlakappa

I think it’s the stylists having more control than anything.

    • In_Stitches

That clutch looks like a pencil case. A cheap one. The dress could have been great if they tightened up the bodice and sleeves, but they didn’t, so…

      • quiltrx

I thought the clutch looks like one of those clear/milky VHS cases video stores used to have.

        • majorbedhead

Derp. Should have scrolled down. I just said the same thing.

          • quiltrx

I love that someone else saw it too!

    • Sophie

I really like the shoes in black. I was still stuck on the black model, so I didn’t even notice her wearing a red version of them until I read the commentary.

    • Meg

That skirt fabric looks like a “high end” Disney design. I cannot unsee the mickey heads…

    • ashtangajunkie

I love that orange lipstick, but not on Kerry Washington. I think the dress would be better if it had a plain cap sleeve or was just sleeveless.

    • Karen Belgrad

I had lipstick like that… when I was nine… and I smeared my orange push-up pop all over my mouth and called it lipstick.

      • Raspberry2012

Lemme tell ya, I was in my early 20s during the heart of the mid-80s neon craze. I had more crazy makeup than Boy George, and I had the bad taste to wear it all at the same time. And even *I* wouldn’t have worn that color of lipstick, no m’aam!

I just realized my last three comments have been about her lipstick, so apparently, it’s really bugging me!

    • Erica

This is what happens when you put boobs in a dress that is only made for a sternum.

    • FibonacciSequins

Those shoes look red to you? I’m seeing Halloween orange.

I don’t like the sheer panel on the skirt, and I really don’t like the shape of the blouse. It makes Kerry’s chest and shoulders look deflated. She’s carrying this outfit purely on the strength of her personal beauty.

      • conlakappa

Too true! Her hair looks good too.

    • Danielle

Really not a fan of the matchy lipstick and shoes.

    • Sobaika

The only thing that truly doesn’t belong is the clutch, and I hear the need for a belt.

Can’t help but love this look though, especially for Kerry. She tends to go for pretty pastels so I appreciate the turn to bolder colors.

      • Trent

Totally agree. I’m actually stunned at the universal dislike of this look. It’s not perfect, but I think Kerry just looks curvy and sexy and absolutely gorgeous. IMO she’s rocking this bold postpartum look.

    • crash1212

I wouldn’t be mad if she’d chosen any lip color other than bright orange and if the shoes were the black version. Still wouldn’t have been my favorite look, though.

    • seventeenwest

As a postpartum woman, I’m impressed she can haul the girls out like that without losing an eye. Could use a belt and the clutch looks like an Otter Box, but dang, she looks really pretty from the neck up. #newmomfistbump

    • kimmeister

The clutch needed to be simple to not compete with the paint splatter print, but white was not the way to go.

She’s making the dress work far more than I would have expected. I don’t mind the orange lip on her, but the eye makeup game is off and doesn’t go with the lips.

    • Joanna

Agree on the need for a belt, but I actually like the shoes in red with this dress.

    • Mr. J.

Love to look at her….but she does look like she’s wearing an apron.

    • ms_kat

This dress makes her look completely dumpy. I loathe that lipstick color.

    • Kimmu

Somehow I never noticed before this set of photos, but Kerry Washington and Scarlett Johansson have almost the same face. I love that orange lipstick but I am not sure I love it with this dress.

    • Jessica Freeman

Hate the sheer hem, but I’m on board with the rest of it.

    • ChristySchiff

I thought this needed a belt too, until I scrolled down to the runway version and saw that terrible belt. This is fine without.

BUT, wouldn’t it be better just a smidge shorter?

    • Cyprienne Zed

God love her, I’m just so happy that kid is out her belly now. Wear what you want, girl.

    • MilaXX

The dress is okay. It might be better looking if it was knee length and I don’t think the plunging neckline is doing her any favors. The shoes are straight up hiddy.

    • zenobar

      Commander Salamander Realness.

    • AlisonS

Does that clutch look like a VHS rental box to anyone else? Having spent a large portion of my childhood in a rental store I can’t unsee.

    • Jacob Bowen

I like the original shoe SO much better than the version Kerry is sporting, and they would have gone SO much better with this outfit!

    • OhSheila

I know why she thought that lipstick would be cute, but oof. honey. no.

    • Shawn EH

The shoes are much better in black. The dress at least does look expensive. I like her face, so much better than the death-mask model.

    • amber.

BYE. Sorry, but she looks great. I’ve missed her RC appearances so I will take this. This is more color than most of the basic actresses ever wear. All hail Queen Kerry.

    • StillGary

Knew you were going to call the lipstick on matchiness but it is a beautiful color on her!

    • moweezy

literally before i even read TLo’s words “Gorge, but needs a belt.”

    • Wink

Love her face. Not the lipstick, dress or shoes. But it’s great to see her back on the red carpet.

    • Raspberry2012

Everything you said is everything I’m thinkin’. I love the paint splatter print, it’s totally cool. And those exact shoes would have worked, multi-colored toe and all, in black. And good god, the neon red lipstick – just no.

    • marlie

I like it, but I would have liked it a LOT more with the black shoes and the belt. But still, Kerry looks lovely for one of her first post-baby appearances.

    • Kate

the clutch reminds me a little of the old plastic VHS tape cases – like she’s dropping off the rental at Blockbuster and then heading to the event…..

    • majorbedhead

The clutch looks like two VCR cases stuck together and that dress shape is really bad.

    • formerlyAnon

I like that skirt a lot. Though I’d employ a belt and a blouse rather than that top, which resembles a baggy leotard more than is seemly.

    • Fuchsiaforever

She needs black shoes and to tone down that lipstick.

    • TheLaurenJean

      Psh, she looks great!

    • Bernadette

Yes to a belt, and yes to a bra! Lady, you just had a baby, you’ve got to support your girls.

    • Qitkat

I think we have seen this paint splatter skirt before on someone else. Nevertheless, Miss Lady, you look lovely, postpartum or not. She is rocking those brilliant colors, which stand out so well against the black, like an Amish quilt.

    • Tânia

on the first pic she looks so much like Scarlett Johansson

      • Synnamin

and the last pic as well. I think it might be the hairstyle and the lipcolor.

    • maretha2

Minority opinion here, but I think she looks pretty freaking great. I even think she’s pulling off that lipstick color.

      • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

        Yep, with you

      • Sly

        Agree as well!

    • somebody blonde

I think she looks good, except that the lipcolor doesn’t go and the clutch is kind of random. Random, but not clashing, so I call it a win.

    • alyce1213

I get that she’s loving her new mommy boobs, but that top is a horror. It seems to be giving her a hump in the back as well.
The paint splatter skirt is really cute, but it’s too high waisted and doesn’t need the sheer nonsense at the hem.
Lips and shoes can be seen from space.

    • Yolanda

That lip color made my eyes twitch as well. Actually they are still twitching. And that the lip color matches the shoes, come on Kerry?! Other than that though and that clutch, I think the look works.

    • demidaemon

It definitely needed a belt. And that is certainly a Jackson Pollack skirt, which is not a compliment coming from me.

      • Qitkat

I remember having a conversation about Jackson P recently, I guess it was with you! As far as the skirt goes, one could say it was a clever choice simply for the disguising element it provides for her post-partum body, which may not quite be back to Olivia Pope perfection.

        • demidaemon

Probably. I do admit that some of my Jackson P dislike has leaked over from my best friend, who is an artist. I actually think the shape of the skirt is fine. I’m just not liking the squiggly print.

    • Mothra

It has a weird fit on the bodice, Also the shoes are to matchy. I don’t want to see Olivia Pope’s cleavage either, but that’s just me.

    • Violentcello

Who have we seen this on before? Taylor Shilling? Diane Kruger? I can’t remember, but I’m pretty sure it was a blonde …

      • ktr33

        It’s driving me nuts, too…

      • Qitkat

Tada! yes, Taylor Schilling, May 22. I searched TLo’s site with ‘Sportmax’. It was bugging me too.

        • Violentcello

Aha! Thanks. I think I like the top on Taylor’s better, but the skirt looks better on Kerry. It looks like the sheer part might be shorter on hers.

    • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

      I love the dress

    • SierraDelta

That’s a lotta makeup, and she’s way too naturally pretty to have that much garish maquillage hiding it.

    • macwell

The first and only thing I thought was ‘belt’….then ‘lips’…..-_-

    • icm

The model has a belt on and it looks so much better ,killer shoes in black ,red not so much. Speaking of shoes I know that the red sole is a signature component of all Louboutins ,but honestly the colour does not work with every style they design. In fact in some photos I find the flash of red a distraction from the shoe and the outfit of the person wearing it.Am I wrong in thinking this?

    • understateddiva

That is a HARD dress to wear. That hip-flare combined with all the color interest being on the bottom half – I can’t think of many mortals who could pull it off.

    • ktr33

Who wore this, or something else from this collection, recently? We didn’t like it then. Anyway… in her hand, does the clutch look a VHS box or am I imagining it?

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Yes to the Uncle’s assessment. Glad to see her back on the RC.

    • unbornfawn

Is it just me or do her shoes and lipstick match?

    • smallgirlsaretrouble

As another postpartum woman, I too understand the need for breastfeeding appropriate tops – that is one of the major, if not only, criteria I now have when purchasing clothes.

    • conlakappa

I don’t get the bad Barbie lipstick. It’s been applied by someone not using to working with brown skin–I know this from recent personal experience!
