Kathy Griffin in Halston Heritage at the 2014 Daytime Emmy Awards

Posted on June 23, 2014

We love this dress on the model and keep trying to talk ourselves into loving it on Miss Kathy.

And it’s not like the dress doesn’t fit and flatter her. But there’s a reason why there are color rules for red heads. They’re easily and often broken (see: Christina Hendricks), but every once in a while, you get an example of why someone dreamed up those rules in the first place. We just don’t think this color looks good on her at all. It’s as simple as that. The same dress, in a blue or green print, would’ve been a total knockout of a look. But as pretty as this version of the dress is, it appears to be fighting her natural (Well. Semi-natural) coloring every step of the way.

It seems too beachy for a red carpet. This is kinda of breezy and casual, it doesn’t really read as “I’m the host of the Daytime Emmys and I’m walking the Red Carpet”

    • MilaXX

The event wasn’t televised, just streamed online. From the reviews I’ve read nobody seem to give a darn, so this is about right.

    • kbshee

My thought was “it isn’t special enough” but yeah, what you said.

  • LadyVimes

    Hmm. Give it to Lupita.

    • prettyinmink

I was just de-lurking to post that exact same thing. Bye now.

    • PastryGoddess

You realize that is the answer to everything in life…right?

      • LadyVimes

Well, it’s always between Cate, Tilda, and Lupita, but Lupita is definitely the answer in this case.

    • &theJets

That was my first thought, too.

  • Audrey Lee

This screams grandma to me. It’s grandma on the model, too. Sorry, Kathy.

    • Diane Iafrate

that was my impression too…it would look nice on my mom…and she’s 80

  • FibonacciSequins

She’s very petite. I think this is just too big on her, particularly in the bodice.

  • Yoshio

The print looks like nothing more than a bad batik thrown in a blender – it’s just ugly and so is the dress. Kathy is fine, the dress is ugly.

    • PastryGoddess

Good Band name: Bad Batik Blenders

      • Yoshio

Please feel free to use it! If I formed a band we’d sound about as bad a blenders whirring!

  • MoHub

That dress would have killed in green.

    • Stacy C

      Or a midnight blue.

    • Danielle

You read my mind. An emerald green would have made me salivate.

  • Thomas

I’m a ginger and I actually think it looks great on her. Now if this was a tomato/ketchup red, we’d be having all sorts of problems.

    • Kitten Mittons

Yeah, most reds, oranges, and pinks bring out the pinkish tones in my skin, and I just look awful. By comparison, I think she’s pulling off this pink quite well.

But the green version in my head would’ve been stunning on her.

      • Sarah

I love red. It does not love me. Unless I’m trying to impersonate a beet, that is.

        • Kitten Mittons

I have two red tops in my closet, and I pretty much bought them as proof that there are red garments out there that don’t make me look like a tomato. And even though I wear them about once a year, I refuse to throw them out for the same reason.

It’s sorta like finding Big Foot. No one will believe you without proof.

          • Sarah

I have one. It is a Washington Capitals shirt. I wear it for Hockey-related reasons only, and hope that everyone in my company will be drunk enough not to notice how I’m looking quite flushed or assume that the flush is from my own drunkenness.

          • Kitten Mittons

You’re a genius! I didn’t even think about that. I can wear red whenever I want, I just have to act tipsy enough that everyone assumes I’m just buzzed.

          • MoHub

            Rock the Red!

          • Thomas

I have a maroon dress shirt I really like and I took a picture in it, but I just used a filter to make my face look less flush lol

          • Kitten Mittons

Funny, my shirts are closer to burgundy or maroon than true red, too. A tomato red will never work for me ever. Just like Big Foot, that shit don’t exist.

And I’ll admit to being a total filter novice. I’ve got B&W and Sepia down pat, though 🙂

    • lrhg

I used to have a tomato red t-shirt that I wore in college. I came home one day, saw myself in the mirror and that was the end of that shirt. When I say I can’t wear red people always argue that it doesn’t matter about my hair. I agree with them that it doesn’t matter about my hair, my SKIN on the other hand has some issues.

      • Thomas

I agree. I think it has to do more with having pink or red undertones in the skin than having red hair, but gingers usually have those undertones unfortunately. It’s also why when I get acne it’s more noticeable than on darker skinned people. Damn tan people.

        • J. Preposterice

yeah. My ginger sister and I have almost identical coloring except for our hair (mine is dark blond), and can/can’t wear all the same shades.

  • Leah Elzinga

Congratulations, TLo. You have officially cornered the market on posts including both “Kathy Griffin” and “natural”. I kid, I kid. I love her, but that colour is unfortunate. This dress in almost any colour outside of the red/orange/yellow family would have been a homerun.

  • MarissaLG

Compared to what she usually wears I think this is really great.

  • Janet B

Too bad about the color, I can’t get past it to judge the dress on her.

    • understateddiva

yes! She tends toward these structured, corsetted looks. She looks nice in something flowy for a change.

  • @Biting Panda

Also, the semi shorter length, paired with a high heel, on the model, gives it a floaty and breezy feel, that Kathy’s is missing.

    • makeityourself

Yes, and the model is probably 5′ 10″ or taller, so she can make it work. Try that on Kathy and it would have stumpifying.

  • Glam Dixie

I don’t dislike it, but I don’t love it either. She looks pretty, but always a bit like a bobble head.

  • Betsy

I kinda’ like it. It’s the best I’ve seen her look in awhile and honestly, I’m kind of sick of seeing her in green. Nice to see a redhead take a risk. I’m not bothered by the red on red. 🙂

  • hughman

Like her performance at the awards, she kind of phoned in this dress. But the audience sits at tables for god’s sake so don’t expect a lot of la-ti-da Beyoncé.

  • I like her hair here. I’m glad she doesn’t have her “magic” hair for a change.

  • MaggieMae

An up-do would make up for a lot of the faults in this pairing.

  • Reine Bron

I think the dress looks good on Kathy but have to say the daytime emmys were a MESS, they might as well have scrapped the whole thing

  • PastryGoddess

I think it’s time for Kathy to get a new wig/hairdo. I don’t mind the dress, but something is up with her proportions around the face.

    • alyce1213

I’d love to see her change her hair already. It’s long overdue.

  • MilaXX

Agreed. Pretty dress, but I think she would have looked better in green.

  • My theory on redheads wearing red/pink is that you need to complement your skin tone – if you get that right, your hair will fit right in. She has quite a yellow-based skin so this blue-r red isn’t quite working for her. Not disastrous, just not her best.

  • marlie

I LOVE this dress. It’s not bad on Kathy, but I agree that a different color could have been positively gorgeous.

  • Call me Bee

I like it. It’s a good color for her, and it’s easy-breezy perfect for the summer Daytime Schmemmys.

  • Denise Rambo

I think I like it better slightly shorter – like it is on the model.

    • Shawn EH

Let’s face it; it’s not the dress that’s shorter.

  • Peeve

I’m a redhead with a similar hair color, and although red is my favorite color, I avoid wearing it like the plague. I decorate with it, instead. My skin and hair have too much red in them not to clash. I can wear pinks and some muted oranges, but not red!

    • Courtney

I settle for having a red Kitchenaid and a red microwave instead of wearing it. No reds, oranges, most pinks, and all but one shade of yellow for me. As you say, too much red in the hair and red undertones to pale skin.

  • Annmarie Kane

I love me some Kathy but gurl, that’s not your color.

  • unbornfawn

The color is wrong. Nothing wrong with the fit and shape.

  • Fried Eggs

The belt (?) sits quite above the waist on the model, but it sits at Kathy’s exact waist. I think this makes it an older look on Kathy.

  • picadillos

EXACTLY. Her hair + that dress color = not at all ok. Agreed that another color would’ve been a winner.

    • conniemd

My first thought on the look was “oh no, it clashes with her hair.” The dress makes her hair color look bottled, brassy and cheap, something no woman EVER wants. Her red is just a tad too orangey to work.

  • Imasewsure

I could have lived with it on her as a short dress even in this color. but I wish she could have just handed it off to Ms. Saldana for the win instead. Or new mama Kerry Washington. Don’t think pale (brassy) redheads are the target here

  • Trickytrisha

I’m fine with the dress, however her head looks like it belongs in another picture. Kinda looks like she’s going for Katherine Helmond in Brazil.

  • connie238

I think the deep v neckline makes her face look longer. It mirrors her jawline.

  • traceyishere

She should have changed her wig color to wear this dress.

  • Jackie4g

If the red color was more like a brick red, or a the print colors included brownish reds, then it would have worked better. I think the red print colors are too pink toned, that’s the problem with the dress and her hair.

  • I can hear Halston…chuckling from Fashion Heaven…. PPP. Polyester Printed Plisse…. Style wise that gown / dress is meaningless.

  • demidaemon

I’m not too fond of wear the waist is sitting on her. It seems to low for some reason.

  • formerlyAnon

That hair is so faux and shiny, I’m getting a Helen Gurley Brown vibe. The dress is fine, but it should have been a lot finer. She’s worked damn hard and paid good money for her figure, her dress should be flattering it.

I have to say, even though I imagine her to be not always easy to get along with, I want her story to end happily. She works the fuck at it.

  • swon20

Who cares what she was wearing .She was not funny just rude .A bad choice for hosting the Emmys.

  • quiltrx

Yeah, I think a different color would have been pretty good. I also think part of the reason it works on the model is the ‘swing’ by it not being floor length. It goes all limp on Kathy.

  • Jacob Bowen

I actually love this…I am ALWAYS skeptical of reds on a redhead, but this red reads REALLY well on my screen!

  • e jerry powell

I give her no grief, because I’m betting she paid retail for it.

  • Judih1

Looks to night gown like to me. And her lack of accessories doesn’t help

  • I saw her on video and it’s a gorgeous and flattering dress, but yes, in a green or blue it would have been a spectacular cool counterpoint to the warm “red” of her hair.

  • gitchygitchymama

Hi everybody, I’m wearing a freeby! Can you tell?

  • Carolyne

I pretty much agree with all the previous comments, but maybe some higher heels or a slightly shorter length would’ve helped it look less like she was sweeping the carpet with it?

  • Virginia Lee

I think it looks way more chic on the model simply because of the length. The ankle length makes the skirt & the pleats float better.

  • I think the other problem with this dress is that it’s made for movement. With Kathy just standing still, it looks a little ::ahem:: frumpy. The model is active and swinging that skirt. I have less problem with the color than the just-hangin’-there frump.
