We’re not huge fans of dressing in character for your film premiere, but Disney characters practically scream for a little cosplay. This is breathtaking, to be honest. We doubt we’d like it on other gals in other settings as much as we like it here, on her. As much as we ding her for wearing too many whites and pastels, only she could pull off something like this. Part of the reason we think it works is because the whimsical aspect of the lace, with the stars, moons and suns worked into the design. If this was rendered in a more standard lace, we’d roll our eyes and call it a giant wedding gown.  But here, it’s just pure fantasy fashion, which is right for the occasion.

Our only complaint is that the bow looks sad and limp.

Not digging it on her. I think it looks more like matronly princess. Plus, I think her skin is too pale for white. It makes her look like a ghost.

    • pattyw

Thank you! Those roots make my eyes twitch, especially since she’s had them since she was, like, 12. Why do she and her sister persist with the farce that they’re blondes?

      • Thomas

Idk, I don’t think it works on them at all, esp. Elle.

  • It definitely looks like an Elle Fanning dress – it would have been perfect for her to dance around Stonehenge on Saturday celebrating Litha.

  • @Biting Panda

Awful. Every inch. And that’s a lot of inches.

    • Glam Dixie

The dress is hiddy, stem to stern, no question, her face however, looks the best I think I’ve ever seen it.

      • Amelia Via

Her face isn’t shiny! It’s a solstice miracle!

      • demidaemon

Thank you for saying this. Ugly ass dress.

    • random_poster

I agree. I feel icky looking at it because I’m so used to seeing so many poorly or un-lined garments on the red carpet and all of us complaining about it that I automatically think it’s transparent. Someone mentioned lining close to her skin color, and I do hope that’s true, but I’m having a hard time shaking my disbelief.

    • CelandineM

First, bahawahahhahahahaaa every inch hahaha and second, she’s a sloppy, tatty, Christmas tree topper.

    • StarburstLady

Shouldn’t the woman wearing this be having her bodice ripped open by Fabio?

  • Noah

I would hate this anywhere else on anyone else, but this sings here. I think that’s mostly because the makeup keeps her from looking washed out.

    • marlie

Her makeup is so, so, so pretty.

  • Dave Hime

I bet the Japanese are eating this up!

    • KateShouldBeWorking

I feel gross for up-voting this.

  • Did I miss the moment where Disney put out a Stevie Nicks princess movie?

  • W. Frame

I love the witchy stevie nicks in high school vibe

  • I think it’s a hella sexy look – quite transparent and will that little cleavage thing going on. She’s doing a ‘sweet and innocent’ face too. Nicely played!

  • Sarah

Against my will and all I know of my personal taste, I rather like this. I think the shape is lovely and while it does have something of the Pre-Raphaelite Bride about it, I’m not mad.

    • mjude

I like it too & I am surprised!

  • MW

I’m going to actually say that this is the best her face has ever looked. Striking as hell!

    • ModernDowager

Yes. The eye makeup is especially lovely.

    • kmk05

The only word that comes up to my mind (paired with the wavy hair and this particular dress) is ‘ethereal’. Her face is simply phenomenal.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

Sweet Jeebus, I never thought I’d complain about lining being too good but the bang-on match to her skin tone makes this a bit squicky for me.

  • sugarkane105

Mm, no. Bored with the fairytale schtick. Next.

  • KinoEye

Not a big fan of the dress, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen her head look better. Thankfully it looks like her MUA realized that consumption isn’t a good look. Love the silver.

  • crash1212

I think that’s the prettiest she’s ever looked anytime, anywhere. This is a total WERQ for me. And, that is a gorgeous dress and I’m forever thankful that she lined it.

  • Finally. This is the apex moment of her Ethereal Kook aesthetic.

  • TinyDynamo

I kind of…love this. The dress is hideous, the campy princess aspect is so boring, white dresses & center parted blonde hair are overdone, but yet this is totally working. She looks like Princess Aurora, just woken up from a perfect fairy tale sleep. WOW.

Also, I hate to disagree with the Uncles, but my take on that bow is that it makes it look useful (as if it’s tied to hold the bodice closed) instead of tacked on as a fussy detail. Thus the “limpness” reads more accurate & realistic. You know, in a McQueen Princess Fantasy kind of way.

  • decormaven

Needs a necklace, if only to mark the delineation between skin and dress. Fairest of the fair, indeed.

    • Gatto Nero

Just me, probably, but I think any embellishment would ruin this look.

      • decormaven

I do see your point. It would have to be a very light metal and not too ornate.

I just feel and looks like it is melting around her. The hem is too long, the sleeved are too long. I know it is a delicate edge to tread, but it just feels (IMHO) that she has slipped over into “Mommy’s Closet” (Albeit a fabulous closet full of couture). Agree that it is a gorgeous gown. I weep for the seamstresses who sewed that feather trim who get to see it drug through the dirt .

  • Gatto Nero

On anyone else, anywhere else, this would be over-the-top frou.
On her, at this venue, breathtaking.
The celestial designs in the lace make this piece.

  • ballerinawithagun

Now this looks like my Gunne Sax wedding dress from 1975, bought at the Apricot Clothing Emporium.

  • Mothra

Oh yuck. She looks limp and sad.

  • CT14

Would it kill her to brush her hair?

Or cut it? Or stop dying it to death?

I just hate her hair so much. It ruins everything else.

  • LadyVimes

This works because she’s in Tokyo. This is a perfect dress for a fairytale movie red carpet in Tokyo.

  • Judy_S

Oh, I just woke up and threw on this old thing.

  • MK03

She’s wearing a slip under that dress, right? RIGHT??
I must say, though, I like the sun and moon motif. It’s a sneaky callback to the tale that Sleeping Beauty originated from, Sun and Moon and Talia.

  • Bad Idea Jeans

    Speaking of sucking…

  • greyhoundgirl

I would have loved this when I was a hippie in the 70s. It is beautiful on her and the stars on the sleeves kind of make it more special. Only for the very young.

  • Kent Roby

She’s such a lovely girl, but seeing her in something sheer scares me. I’m pretty sure that Chris Hansen is hiding behind the backdrop.

    • TinyDynamo

I just snorted at the Chris Hansen line. Classic!

  • Frank_821

I wish she had done something else with hair though. just to make it a wee bit more modern. striking outfit though

    • Imasewsure

Hate to say it but this look calls for the Frozen braid or a loose updo… might take it further in to Juliet in her nightie but it’s kind of there already so why not go all the way

  • ashtangajunkie

They really nailed her makeup this time. She’s gorgeous.

  • MilaXX

Joan of Arc realness. Bored now.

  • Wink

A bucket of blood is gonna pour over her head in 5, 4, 3, 2…

  • nannypoo

I think this works because she finally has enough makeup on. But doesn’t she look a little like Miss Havisham in her younger days?

  • kimmeister

    It’s so voluminous everywhere though.

  • Nazzzy

    This is…horrible?

  • “Our only complaint is that the bow looks sad and limp.”
That’s your only complaint?!? The dress swallows her whole. And her two-tone hair is so wrong for this look.

  • TAGinMO

    “But I don’t wanna be a pirate!”

  • Alloy Jane

Send this dress to Florence Welch, please. And then either stop lightening your hair or get your roots done regularly.

  • marlie

She looks really pretty here. Pretty and ethereal and almost elfin. I don’t particularly like the dress because it almost looks like she’s wearing a fancy old-fashioned bathrobe, and there’s a little too much chest for a 16 year old, but she’s still managing to own it. Attagirl.

  • FancyPhilly

    Virgin Suicides realness.

  • Ashleigh

It must be just me, but this looks too big all over. Looks fun to wear, tho.

  • Lily

I’m not a fan of the dress in and of itself, but it really does fit her star-child meets earth-mother meets celestial-fairy persona she has going on. Certainly no attagirl, but it’s age appropriate and works for Japan, which, from a fashion standpoint, appreciates the not-so-understated. I’d give it a slight IN were this an IN or OUT poll.

  • FibonacciSequins

My only complaint is the repeated gathering on the sleeves. Her hair and makeup are even better than the dress.

  • Daisy Walker

1975 peignoir set. Hate that white shet in the corners of her eyes.

  • conniemd

Perhaps one needs to have seen the movie to appreciate this. The ethereal nature of the dress is totally fitting for Aurora IMO.

  • YoungSally

Valley of the Dolls Part ___ (whichever one they are up to now)

  • Fuchsiaforever

WOw! MAma mia!!! What a dress! I’d love to own it and wear it at least once a week!!!!

  • Trickytrisha

Flower child royalty!. Love the dress. And her.

  • This is absolutely the best I’ve ever seen her look. Postmodern hippie is damn hard to pull off but she’s really rockin’ it! WERQ!

  • Parisinmydreams

If Helena Bonham Carter wore it as a night gown, or maybe visiting 10 Downing, I’d smile and give it a thumbs up. Here, it looks cheap and unflattering.

  • Tad to Victorian dreamscape for me!

  • Hair n makeup perfect though!

  • understateddiva

Thats some serious FACE. As others have mentioned, great makeup, but she’s drawing herself up to her full height, showing us her gorgeous long neck, and serving up model. A little mentoring from Angelina, perhaps?

  • msdamselfly

  • bitchybitchybitchy

This dress is a lotta look. Not sure if I find this an “In”, but it does have an ethereal quality that fits the movie premiere.

  • demidaemon

I hate it. It looks like an old doily that had been transformed into a dress five hundred years ago and left to sit until today. Also, her boobs are going to fall out. NO.

  • Joycelyn Watterson-Woods

I wish it didn’t cover her hands, it makes it feel as if it’s too big for her. Her makeup looks good WITH this, she usually looks a bit washed out to me

  • RawrArgh

I feel like that makeup is making her look like someone else. It’s
either a model or another actress. Perhaps someone from the 70s/a film
or photoshoot set in the 70s. Maybe reminds me a little of the star of
the Mr Brightside music video? I’m not sure, but it’s definitely someone
    with doll-like features.

  • quiltrx

I like the crazy lace/eyelet stuff. That’s one expensive nightgown, I’m sure.

  • ThaliaMenninger

She’s a little young for Miss Havisham.

  • kim bunchalastnames

i love the light shadow around her eyes; a good complement to the dress.

  • livesarah

I’m not sure why I like this, but she looks great.

  • GillianHolroyd

    Bedraggled child bride’s wedding night.

  • RescueMe23

    Hate it.

  • Cathy S

I don’t like this at all. It’s all sad and limp. She looks bland and droopy.

  • Reine Bron

This dress looks so much better on elle than marion cotillard

  • AndieJay

I love it. I do wish she’d done something a little more exotic with her hair, though.

  • gitchygitchymama

The chicken feathers around the hem is a nice touch.

  • AlisonHendryx

i really feel we’ve watched her grow up this year. she looks so much more mature here than at the beginning of this poledance.

  • Danielle

    Very striking. She looks ethereal.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

The stars and moons and suns confuse me — to which god am I supposed to sacrifice her?

    • Shawn EH

If only there were some pentacles in there, too! I’d say she’s definitely in the Demeter/Persephone/Hecate realm.

  • Gorengirl

    I love this dress!~!

  • Andrea Lentz

this is so perfect for her and the occasion! LOVE IT!

  • Nancy Arseneault-Heald

    Bah… vintage Gunny Sax.

  • colorjunky

    This is a fantastic peignoir!

  • Krysta

Can’t believe you didn’t mention this, but her makeup is AMAZING.

  • NinjaCate

    She’s got Laverne Cox hair.

  • JynxTheCat

Susan Day meets Marsha Brady meets Carrie.
