Cate Blanchett in Chloé at the Women In Film 2014 Crystal + Lucy Awards

Posted on June 12, 2014

Let’s face it: this would look like a pile of laundry on anyone else.

If it works at all – and to be honest, we’re not sure it does – it’s because of the Power of Cate. We suppose this is meant to look ethereal and floaty, but it just looks heavy to us. Almost… damp, somehow. The skirt’s got potential but that top can’t be seen as anything but dowdy to us. Thankfully, Cate doesn’t rely solely on the dress to make her look good. She’s always been pretty great about accessorizing and she’s no less impressive here. Both the sandals and the earrings are gorgeous. They’d be perfect for the kind of dress this dress is trying to be.

Did that make sense?

    • @Biting Panda

      Gift Bag realness.

    • RussellH88

This looks like something Uma Thurman would wear and a get a “Gurl, send this to Cate Blanchett”

    • TAGinMO

Sister Wife #5 opted for a beach wedding.

      • smayper

        HA!!!! FTW.

    • Danielle

The power of Cate compels me.

    • Mrs. Julien

      Ummm, comfortable.

      • Trent

Really? ‘Cause this just looks restricting and overworked and heavy to me, especially for June. I feel like Cate has been off her game lately, which makes me sad…

    • Bridget212323

yes it does. This dress makes her look much larger than she really is (and she’s very tiny) it doesn’t help that its white. But the earrings are boss…

    • Shawn EH

Lorraine Schwartz is worth the money, I’d say! Beautiful blue accents.

    • Denise Alden

I don’t think I know designers that well, but this doesn’t say “Chloe” to me at all. Love your earrings and shoes, though!

    • kimmeister

Gorgeous earrings. I think the dress would have been improved by adding a thin belt in that same shade of blue. I don’t like the sandals with the dress though.

      • decormaven

And a thin blue bangle at the wrist to further carry the color.

    • Kathy_Marlow

Where is her minion with the wind machine?? This dress NEEDS a wind machine!

      • EveEve

And then she would be Cate – Winged Victory of Samothrace!

        • Just Me

Or Iman, who would wear this dress and command the wind to follow her around while she made rent.

    • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

Just get that bodice under tighter control and we’ve really got something. What ruins it is the overly baggy top. If it were just a bit more trim, especially at the waist,t his would SING.

      • Carleenml

        I’m not convinced.

      • TAGinMO

I’m half with you. The skirt is kind of great, especially in the first shot. But I think the bodice/top is more “teardown” than “reno.”

    • another_laura

Oh yes, guys, it makes perfect sense and I agree completely. The Power of Cate (earrings + sandals) = acceptable. On anybody else, very likely a failure.

    • PinkyK

She can make a burlap feed bag look chic!

      • JulieTy

        Like Lucy in Paris!!!!! :-D

    • Frank_821

It’s a disappointing dress and the seaming looks questionable

    • BayTampaBay

Do not like the shoes at all let alone with this skirt/dress/

      • kimmeister

        They’re like bedazzled Jesus sandals.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

An image of Jesus wearing these and asking his disciples “Do these make my toes look fat?” is now running through my brain.

        • demidaemon

That makes sense. Cate is like a saviour.

    • Mothra

Toilet paper bridal gown shower game!

    • susan6

      Galadriel goes to the beach.

    • ashtangajunkie

A simple, fitted top would have completely changed how I feel about this, but I don’t hate it as is.

    • María José Benites Peralta

I kind of love this. It is nymph of the forest realness. Yes, it is too bulky to my taste but somehow it works well on her and the sandals are perfect wth the effortless vibe of the look.

    • Ashleigh

Love to see her dancing in this one…

    • Sarah

I thought “Gorgeous! Love earrings & sandals!” and then looked at the dress. She is all-powerful.

    • Fuchsiaforever

Toilet paper mummy!!! What an awful dress!

    • MilaXX

Flat sandals on the RC! Nothing else matters, this wins the day for me! ………………Okay I kinda wish the top was a scoop neck or V, but otherwise, i like this.

      • Leah Elzinga

FLATS! yes! That was my exact reaction.

    • Anna

      Galadriel’s golden years in Miami!

Love the earrings though. Can’t stop staring at them.

    • Daisy Walker

I love that she wears flats on the RC! I see and understand all the quibbles, but she still looks gorg.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Raglan sleeves seem like an odd choice. I like the skirt and the sandals but Lorraine Schwartz jewellery always reads cheap to me. She should’ve hung onto the Chopard prawns.

      • kimmeister

This might be the first time I’ve ever seen raglan sleeves with ruffles.

      • http://www.chifleschips.com Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

Agreed, my dear. Prawns it should be; not these.

    • Lex

I saw her in this dress on a different site with much better pictures that showcased her look better- she looked amazing, breezy and totally ethereal as only Cate Blanchett can. These photos here do not do this look justice but i can see how one might think it’s not a great look if this is all one saw of it

    • GillianHolroyd

I’m blaming the backdrop. It just looks wrong against yellow with harsh black graphics. Set this photo op in a garden and we’d love it.

    • Alyssa

I love those earrings. And I agree, this only works because of the power of Cate.

    • mjude

I still feel the need to bow the fuck down. I love the earrings & I am not that kind of girl.

    • Griffinqueen

Not to get all “Notes on a Scandal”, but she always leaves me a bit weak in the knees. I would (Cult Sister Wife) hate this on anyone else, but on her… well, she looks breezy and angelic.

    • marlie

It’s… ok. Not particularly exciting, but s’alright. Those earrings are gorgeous, though.

    • MannahattaMamma

could I be her for just like, a minute or two? Just to experience what it must be like to be inside all that gloriousness? Alas, no. I have to settle for daydreaming here in my yoga pants.

    • Kristin

I would love the top with all or nearly all of the sleeve ruffles removed. Then, I think it would provide a simpler, sleeker (?) contrast to the ruffle explosion in the skirt.

As you said, earrings and sandals are perfection. Cate is perfection. She is always and forever my “I want to be her” celebrity.

    • quiltrx

I do like the skirt and the styling. The shape of the top is just kind of depressing and nothing at the same time, though.
But at least SOMEONE finally wore something that looks like SUMMER!

    • deelup

      That’s one radiant motherfucker.

    • FibonacciSequins

This should have been constructed in silk crepe, with all the ruffles made of chiffon, to be as light and airy as it should be. Cate is giving it what ethereality it has.

    • ms_kat

Have you seen the photos of the models underwater with shipwrecks? By Benjamin Von Wong? This dress would be perfect for that shoot. I’m not sure that’s a compliment. The shoes are particularly unflattering to her feet.

      • DuBey2

        THIS.

    • Wink

Cut a foot off the bottom, add that fabric to the sleeves, then send the new dress to Stevie Nicks.

    • Meg

      Boo! Ghost costume.

    • KayEmWhy

Sorry nothing about this works for me, it looks like a tumble of cheap fabric. It’s way too long and the sandals are a big no with this dress.

    • Alloy Jane

She looks like she’s been toilet paper’d. Love the sandals.

    • KinoEye

The dress… I can take or leave, but something I’ve noticed more as I’ve looked at Cate over the years is how she is the ultimate master of smizing. No matter what the rest of her face is doing, her eyes are always alive, if that makes any sense. If someone decided to make a silent film and cast her in it, she would slay.

      • Anna

That movie needs to be MADE, like yesterday. Co-starring Swinton.

    • PlethoraofBooks

      I want her earring collection.

    • Raspberry2012

Yeah, there’s something off about it. Too “raggy”. I do love the earrings, sandals, hair and makeup.

    • DuBey2

I don’t like those sandals on her OR the Statue of Liberty

    • Qitkat

Hummph, NO. Our Cate has taken on the bosom of an elderly matron. Still waiting for her lover after the wedding, her fifth. (He fled in terrified haste.)

    • somebody blonde

I think the problem is that it’s a very opaque white. It would’ve looked more ethereal if there were more variations in the tones. Normally I hate sheerness, but a little would’ve helped here.

    • LeelaST

The flats seem like a wrong choice.

    • crash1212

Sorry to say, it looks like a pile of laundry on Cate, too. Hate the shoes. Love the head.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Both Cate and Tilda being off their A-game is a sure sign of the End Times.

    • numenah

Does this woman not have the most beautiful skin? What is that skin care line she shills?

      • schadenfreudelicious

        SK-II

      • Gatto Nero

But I think she was born with it.

        • numenah

          Me too. Want that luminosity!

    • Angela_the_Librarian

Last night I watched a documentary about a 70′s cult group called The Source..she would fit right in wearing this!

    • BLauD

I wore those sandals when I got married 7 years ago. I will now take comfort from the fact that Cate and I obviously have the same taste, even if this dress is fairly questionable at best, and clothesline drive-by at worst.

    • Gatto Nero

The top’s a little too blouson, but I think she looks heavenly in this and is styled to perfection.

    • Columbinia

A perfect example of a dress that needlessly add pounds. I love how Cate’s lipstick matches her toe nail polish.

    • Aurumgirl

      Mumsy.

    • Man Dala

This is what Galadriel would wear if invited to a wedding. She’d be totally stealing the bride’s thunder.

    • smayper

I want her earrings, but that dress IS a pile of laundry. Very, very, expensive laundry on a gorgeous woman.

    • LadyVimes

      Those earrings are amazing.

    • SierraDelta

      Dear Cate,

Your earrings are a terrible choice for your dress. I know you’re really embarrassed about that, so you’ll know my motives are pure when I say this: I’ll take them off of your hands to protect you from ridicule in the fashion press.

      Sincerely,
      SierraDelta

Kate Blanchett – The Laundry Dress Whisperer….:)

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

Not even CB can pull off this! This looks like something First Lady First Rosalyn Carter would have worn to a state dinner at the White House, circa 1978′ in mauve or some other frumpy color…

    • enchanted216

Ugh. Have you guys had your coffee today? I’ve seen nothing but awful. I can’t look anymore. I’ll check back next week.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

This is a tricky one even for our Cate, and that’s saying something. Her face and the jewels are fab, though

    • livesarah

Reverse of what you guys have said. She might be able to work the top but the bottom half is ALL wash-day.

    • icm

With all due respect it’s pretty close to looking like a pile of laundry on her as well.I also noticed that her and Tilda have virtually the same hairstyle. They should switch dresses.

    • WittyCism

Are she and Tilda in a fashion version of Ugly Christmas Sweater contest?

    • e jerry powell

You could say diaphanous, except not.

    • Imasewsure

Hair, earrings and face are perfection. The dress works but it’s odd

    • suzq

I would burn the dress in a heartbeat. It makes her look fat and dowdy! Cate deserves better.

    • altermyego

How can anyone even notice the dress when she’s giving such great face?
However, those shoes do nothing to make a woman’s foot look attractive.

    • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

Her head looks stunning – the makeup, the earrings, the hair. The dress is reminiscent of my paper towel roll unrolling itself all over the kitchen counter.

    • JimiG

Well, I’d wear it for a third wedding. Not flattering for gorgeous Cate.
