Met Gala 2014: Kirsten Dunst in Rodarte

Posted on May 06, 2014

So many people felt they needed to warn us about this dress last night. Constant tweets about how we needed to brace ourselves for Kiki’s Death Star dress. But y’know?

We kinda like it.

Or at the very least, we don’t hate it. It’s fun. And for Rodarte, it’s refreshingly simply and free of the sometimes jawdropping awkwardness of their usual fare.  Nothing wrong with an eye-catching graphic on the red carpet. If we had to find something not to like (which we do; it’s in our contract), than let’s get rid of that pointless “strap.”

Her hair and makeup look great. You can’t always say that about her.

  • Ms. Schmidt

I’m enjoying her “bite me” expression in the middle pictures. She looks good!

    • Ginger

Even when she’s smiling, she gives epic bitchface.

      • Denise Alden

I would say that while J Jo is the queen of the bitchface, Kiki masters the Smirk.

  • I loved that collection and told my husband I would wear the hell out of it.

    • Kent Roby

I love this, too. Oddly, this print reminds me in a subtle way of that really wacky Victor and Rolf collection with the huge cut-out sections of the tulle skirts.

    • BlairBear

I almost always feel like I wish Rodarte would tweak stuff like they take interesting ideas and cool fabrics and then just take it a step or three too far. I did kind of love their “aboriginal” collection with the shearling bombers and leather dresses.

  • @Biting Panda

Had this not been Revenge of the Fifth Day (following May the Fourth Be With You Day) maybe this would have been okay. But it’s too on the nose, and she’s not known for cheeky humor.

    • Bill Curtis

      oops, you beat me there.

    • stardust462

      Honestly, I think that’s coincidental.

      • @Biting Panda

        Let’s hope.

    • bowlwoman

I was *hoping* it was a Revenge of the Fifth homage, but alas, it’s not to be. Maybe I should find a new hope.

      • AthenaJ

I see what you did there 🙂

  • crash1212

I was confused by all the pre-hate on this one, too. I thought the dress was pretty cool and that KiKi looked amazing in it. The styling choices are spot on and her head hasn’t looked that good in ages.

    • EveEve

Dainty, princessy diamond floral earrings don’t add anything to such a graphic dress. Now…if they were sputnik-shaped I’d totally go for them.

      • Constant Reader

I was just thinking the same thing! Or the rings of saturn.

      • decormaven

The earrings read vintage, which is in contrast to the modernity of the dress. I need to find a closeup of that bracelet- it’s gorgeous.

      • crash1212

I thought the “dainty, princessy” choices were so good because they weren’t so obvious.

        • EveEve

Princess Charlene (of Monaco) on top and Princess Leia on the bottom?

  • Introspective

hair and makeup are really looking good on kiki. dress works for me graphic and all, and fits well- but agree that strap has to go.

she has serious banji girl expressions going on about the face though. you’d swear she was standing at the bus stop sucking on a lollipop, and not at the met gala.

  • Sarah

She looks great. And also: STAR WARS. So; yes.

  • Bill Curtis

If the Gala had been the day before (May the Fourth…), I would cheer and support this dress without reservation.

    • Coleen

I think that’s why they chose it anyway – it was close enough to the date that those in the know would “get” it.

    • GorgeousThings

Shoot, Bill, I didn’t see your comment before I typed mine. Brilliant minds… 🙂

    • knitnorth

      Revenge of the 5th

      • Coleen

You just won a MILLION internets for that.

        • knitnorth

Oh I wish I could claim that but no, someone far wittier than me came up with it!

      • FancyPhilly

        Love you. 🙂

  • FibonacciSequins

I like the dress a lot and Kiki is elegantly styled. Thumbs up

  • GillianHolroyd

Nope, and the hair scraped back like that is doing unflattering things to her jawline.

  • Anna

After seeing Lupita’s nightmare dress, this looks fabulous.

    • Anna

I would actually love to see this on Lupita.

      • Anna

I wish Lupita had worn this!

        • Anna

Me too, I think it could’ve been a WERQ. And bonus: long enough so you wouldn’t have to see her shoes.

  • smayer

LOVED IT! More chic geek on the RC!

  • I like the print a lot, but all those FABRICS!! I think I see a velvet and a sort of crepe and a silk and a mesh?? Plus the strap AND the dangle-sleeve?? No.

Her face does look on point, tho.

    • KES4K

I know that’s kind of a Rodarte trademark, but yeah…I’m sure they’re all nice fabrics but layered like that, they all cheapen each other.

      • demidaemon

        Exactly. Frankendress.

  • Kimmu

This looks pretty damn good to me, and I love the Death Star graphic.

  • ojosazules

Her best look ever. The contrast between death star dress and the pink froofie behind her, and the look on her face. Yesses.

  • I would cut someone for that bracelet. Seriously gorgeous. I wish both shoulders were the same–either both velvet or both chiffon (preferably chiffon, I’m imagining). It’s a little bipolar but not awful as it is.

  • Crystal

I kind of don’t hate this. Am I sick?

An amendment: The top part is stupid. Keep the top clean and simple and I’d actually love this. But the netting and the bullshit sparkly velvet thing are obnoxious.

  • Jessica Freeman

I agree, of all the shittery on the red carpet, this was not even close to one of the worst. I quite liked it. And while I love the bracelet, a bow doesn’t quite coordinate with the dress.

    • @Biting Panda

      I want!

      • Jessica Freeman

I think there would be a serious cat fight with some of the BKs over that bracelet–myself included.

        • Qitkat

          We’re lining up!

  • Paigealicious

I like it too, though I think that without the Death Star graphic the silhouette would be underwhelming.

  • Frank_821

    I’m with you uncles

I kind of dig the dress. It’s whimsical but not overdone. The dress itself needs some editing but it appeals to the nerd in me. At least it wasn’t a spiderman or interview with a Vampire print

  • Capt. Renault

    You gotta have a gimmick.

  • Carleenml

I love it but I also think anybody could wear it. Kinda casual, no? Cool dress, yes. Met Gala? Eh.

  • numenah

It just photographs so heavy on top.

  • VicD

I definitely like it. Let’s face it, this is practically a plate cleanser after Lupita. And who could have ever expected that!?!!? Kristin looks great.

  • TheDivineMissAnn

That model is the queen of Bitch Face. I had to look away for a minute.

    • AnneElliot

Me too. But she looks like Kristen Stewart’s little sister.

  • Leah Elzinga

There’s another face that could easily belong to another era. Kirsten, Carey Mulligan, et al. All hooded eyes, and tiny bow mouths.

  • katiessh

In comparison to some of the outfits this year, kiki’s could be a lot worse.

  • Scimommy

Ooh, I missed this one last night. I agree – it’s not bad at all. It’s not (a) ugly or (b) boring – two of the worst offenders of the night. And I agree 100% about losing the strap – would definitely look better without it.

  • deelup

I liked it immediately when I saw it. But I am not sure if it’s just my own bias in favor of the fun graphic.

  • appliquer

How can you like this and not like Lupita’s?!!

    • CT14

      Because Lupita’s is awful.

Take the Death Star off, and this is the best Kirsten’s looked in ages. Add the Death Star in, and it’s silly, but not offensive like Lupita’s.

    • They’re nothing alike.

    • Carleenml

    • Kent Roby

The same way you can like baby puppies and not like deadly snakes.

  • CT14

I don’t like that teardrop looking drape on the drape-y sleeve. I don’t like her smirk.

But those are quibbles. Funtimes looking good.

  • Janet B

I’m surprised how much I like it.

  • queeniethebold

i agree with TLo and can’t understand why everyone was going batshit over how awful this dress was. She looks great.

  • SugarSnap108

I actually love the skirt. The top is…not awesome. But overall I’d give this an IN, were we voting. (And we always are, yes?)

    • Kitten Mittons

Yes, why pair such a cheeky, fun skirt with a grande dame-type, draped and ruched, velvet(?) top? Very odd to my eyes. Especially since her styling is so conservative. Her top half and her bottom half do not go together.

  • KendraMR

The dress is okay, but her makeup makes her look twenty years older than her age. Me don’t likey.

  • Jennifer Bober

This so appeals to my not-so-inner geek! I agree that the strap is pointless, but I love the quirky humor of it.

  • nycfan

Given some of the other very questionable stuff I’ve seen in red carpet photos from this event, I think this is kicky and fun in a sea of too serious and serious bad taste.

  • Danielle

I didn’t realize when you said DEATH STAR DRESS that you literally meant DEATH STAR DRESS.

    • AnguaVonUberwald

Yeah me too! I scrolled down like, “So, it’s a sparkly black dress, what are they–OH.”

That said, I love it. I would totally wear this, with pride.

  • SewingSiren

I like this , but don’t love it. If it were a full moon rather than the actual death star from Star Wars I’d love it.

    • Kent Roby

If JLo or Heidi were there, you’d probably see a full moon whenever they leaned forward!

      • demidaemon

  • mjude

yes I am a star wars nerd & I love the dress.

  • MoHub

What? No Princess Leia double-donuts hairstyle?

  • Kent Roby

I love this dress, probably even more so because it seems to be a play on her movie “Melancholia” (which I suffered through this weekend, incidentally).

  • jw_ny

Is she advertising for the Star Wars episode 7…due out in 1 1/2 years? Is she a paid walking billboard? A super fan?

I do like the dress though, and like the graphic. Seems kind of like an odd choice without an explanation of why she chose it.

  • MilaXX

It’s one of the better dresses from that collection. The others look a bit like cosplay. It helps that Ki ki accessorized it well.

  • GorgeousThings

Would have been even better had the gala occurred on May the Fourth.

  • BlairBear

This one is so much better than the one Shailene got. God that dress is awkward overworked and downright ugly

  • Malia C.

I’d never in a million years wear it myself but it’s kind of fun (though boring fogey I am, I prefer the top to the bottom).

  • Personally, I wouldn’t want a galaxy on my torso (might be close to actual scale!) but I could see how others might.

  • Angela_the_Librarian

This was actually one of my favorites of the night. There were so many fugly dresses, this one is at least flattering and it’s nerd chic! (and she wore it a day after May the fourth!)

  • zenobar

This is kind of cheeky and cute, so I can’t hate. But…this was a Charles James themed evening. An excuse – no, a Reason! – to kit yourself out in the most feminine, elegant, quintessentially balling ballgownery available. I personally would be so corseted and swathed and pomp’d and bejeweled, it would take ten minutes to cross a room. And I would love every uncomfortable second of it.

  • KayeBlue

Kiki Dunst, you’ve messed with three of my favorite things: feminism, Bring It On, and now Star Wars. This is just so sixth-grade-costume party with the bodice in a different fabric.

Surprised the uncles like her makeup. Someone with lips that size should reconsider neon lipstick.

  • Eric Stott

If she dies soon will it be “Death Star Star’s Death”?

  • mom2ab

Takes a lot of guts to show Uranus on the red carpet.

    • Kent Roby

Or have everyone pointing at your black hole. I guess it doesn’t matter to Kirsten; she’s probably all anti-matter.

  • lunchcoma

I kinda like it too. At some other events it would seem out of place to me, but I think there’s room to be a little over the top and theatrical here. Just not Lupita level over the top.

  • ashtangajunkie

It’s weird, but I don’t mind it. Really hate her hair that way though. And I’ve yet to figure out what she has to smirk about.

  • kipper

Not for this event, thats all – this would be perfect at at Emmy or Golden Globe…..

  • B_C_J

This is an acceptable gown. I think the top portion has too many elements. Her makeup looks good. Her hair looks severe. I like it up but would prefer it a bit softer.

  • Nancer

    Nerd fashion done right!

  • JimMcC

I love it. It was one of the best of the night for me. Although to my eye, not a soul beat Karolina Kurkova.

  • I kinda hate it.

  • A Shiny O’Connor

I do like the dress, but I am distracted by her face. Is she ‘enhancing’ a la Kidman?

  • ChaquitaPhilly

    Yeah, I liked it, too.

  • WorldBShiny

    IT’S A STRAP!!!

  • JP

And for once she’s standing up straight. It’s quirky and with the costume spirit of the evening. It’s a win for me.

  • israel8491

LOVE. You werq that May the Fourth shit.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

I think Kirsten looks great here — the dress is interesting without being crazy and her hair and makeup are really polished. Plus this is the sort of dress that all of the nerd boys I work with would think is totally hot 🙂

  • megohd

Why is she still invited to stuff?

  • holla

finally some one is having fun on the RC!

  • Tricia Rose

get rid of the sheer strap and the sheer netting at bottom. Hike the skirt up about two inches and I’d be all in!

  • Akemi

I mean, it’s a Star Wars dress. That somehow works, without being costumey. I love it. (Still do not like her though, LOL.)

  • NDC_IPCentral

Since a friend just had hip replacement surgery last week, and I know others who either need it or have had it as well, I’m looking at the placement of that opening in the death star and thinking MAJOR ORTHOPEDIC ACCESS POINT.

  • Anathema_Device

I’d rather see a dress reference the Death Star (like, blowing up the print and making the dress entirely out of that) than see the image screen printed on it, but still, this is fun and certainly the perfect venue for it. She looks really pretty.

  • mdcoon127

Love it – so much better than anyone else you have posted.

  • NeenaJ

If this is wrong, I don’t wanna be right. Love!

  • Dandesun

This Star Wars fangirl digs it and totally wants it. As well as an X-wing dress and a light saber dress. And, of course, my own Han Solo.

  • Greg

Love it. There is a Death Star on her dress. She wins. She wins it all.

  • boweryboy

That dress is fun, which is an adjective I usually never use to describe Rodarte anything.

  • Imasewsure

Agreed… the strap had to go… the rest is fine (even extra fine for her)

  • Coco Cornejo

Too bad the Gala wasn’t on May the 4th…

  • Should have save it for LOST in SPACE premiere!

  • alyce1213

I love it. It’s not boring and she looks great.

  • Mrs. C

Dear Rodarte, Thank you for not placing the Death Star anywhere near the crotch of the dress.

  • Coleslaw McGraw

Smirky Smirkerson at work here. The dress looks far more playful and fluid on the model. It looks overly constructed and stiff on Kirsten. I am totally digging that little rope bracelet though. It reminds me of the lasso of truth that WonderWoman had.

  • Froggae

Love the Death Star, hate the shoes and everything above the waist. Oh, and hate her (and Shailene Woodley) now thanks to that tragic case of verbal diarrhea.

  • jilly_d

I loved this. If you can’t wear your death star dress to the Met Gala, where can you?

  • MannahattaMamma

May the fourth, I’m telling you. Star Wars Day. It’s fab.

  • Qitkat

I would unconditionally love this if the illusion strap were removed or at least down-sized in half.
Even though it’s the same size, it works better on the model; on Kirsten it looks more like an after-thought.

  • marlie

I don’t love OR hate this dress. It’s interesting, but the black asymmetrical part at her waist seems to fit a little funny, and I hate that random bit of sheer at the hem. Otherwise, it fits well, and has some visual interest. And this is the best I think I’ve ever seen her hair and makeup.

  • Synnamin

I’m not generally a fan of hers, but I love that she showed up at the Met Gala so close to Star Wars Day in this dress. Kudos!

    • semirose

Well, day after Star Wars day but close enough for a tree!

      • Synnamin

yeah – had to go back and edit, because when you’re in your third trimester of pregnancy, time starts to do weird things to your brain. I can’t keep track of days anymore!

  • kategs

I love this dress, it works with the “theme” beautifully and then the cheeky print. Oddly enough I rather like the strap. Provides some balance.

  • Chartreusite

It takes major chutzpah to wear something so popart to one of the biggest fashion events of the year. I actually think it really works.

  • FancyPhilly

Love it. Love the graphic, love how she looks in it, especially her facial expression that reads “Yeah, it’s the mother-freaking Death Star.”

  • Raspberry2012

    Oh… my… god… I freaking LOVE this!!!

  • suzq

I wanted to cut the strap off, too. It’s fine, compared to the other monstrosities that walked last night.

  • Kate

I’d heard about this dress and when I saw it, the first thing that flew out of my mouth was “it IS a death star….” — that is all.

  • LeelaST

That strap and combination of fabrics makes for a messy look, but it’s Star Wars! Very, very cool!

  • andreawey

it’s ok, this girl needs more hair…..

  • Mars Tokyo

This is way uglier than Lupita’s fishnet look. Now THIS looks like crafts store nite.

  • Glammie

Yeah, in an evening full of fail, I considered this one a success. The black makes it elegant, the Death Star gives it zest. She’s not overwhelmed by it, which is an issue for her.

  • Lucas

IDK what Rodarte is, but she looks fucking amazing. And everyone loves Star Wars.

  • andi56

Star Wars? My tombstone is going to read “She never saw ‘Star Wars’.”

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Like other BK’s I would get rid of that strap on the right shoulder, but that’s my only quibble.

  • luludexter

I personally don’t like this dress, but it injects some fune, and as the uncles point out it is well styled, and she is pulling it off.

  • GeoDiva

I honestly thought the term Death Star was a metaphor! Then I saw it….OMG! It’s classic but it was worn a day too late,

  • Inspector_Gidget

She probably owes George Lucas $10. Er, I guess Disney now?

  • Jacob Bowen

I LOVE this dress, her hair and makeup, and her attitude. Atta girl Kirsten!

  • Gatto Nero

This is cool and unusual (and a gutsy choice). And she’s styled perfectly.

  • eruannalle

i’m just straight up loving this one, frankly. the sheery strap… thing can definitely go, but otherwise it’s a really fun look, and i give her props for wearing it.

  • DesertDweller79

Dude, the Death Star graphic is one of the best parts of the dress. If it didn’t have the silly strap on top I’d completely love it.

  • Sunraya

She always looks drunk. I can’t take her seriously.

  • LadyVimes

That awkward strap and the strange sheer segment on the hem need to go. Then she gets kudos for wearing a motherfucking Death Star to the Met. I mean, who *hasn’t* wanted to wear Star Wars regalia to the Met?

  • OffToSeeHim

She strikes me as such a self-important bitch, but MAN is this dress AWESOME!

  • Michelle Lim

As a SW geek. I approve. And it’s very mellow for Rodarte.

  • Pterodactyl111

  • frannyprof

I actually think this is kind of a mess! The dress, without the Death Star graphic would be craft-store ugly, her hair is too severe, and the jewelry does not make sense.

  • Super_Red

love love love love love this.

  • Pablo

I have to agree, her face looks lovely and kinda from the 20’s.

  • E. D.

  • demidaemon

It’s not horrible, and she styled herself well for it. However, it is still kind of a Frankendress.

  • smh4748

I don’t mind the dress, but ye gods, that is some terribad hair.

  • willworktomorrow

Serving up some Neil DeGrasse Tyson realness.
