Evan Rachel Wood in The Kooples and J Brand at “An Evening With Women” Benefit

Posted on May 14, 2014

We go back and forth on whether or not this is too on-point or just right for the evening:

When straight ladies opt for the leather pants for an Evening with Women at the Gay & Lesbian Center, we reserve the right to raise an eyebrow.

We’re teasing. It’s a great look; very eye-catching and declarative. By “too on-point” we mean, for instance, the gloves and the purse, which take a butch chic look a little close to being butch costume. Ditch both. You don’t need them, dear.

Just FYI, Even isn’t a straight lady. She’s bisexual.
I like her outfit, but I HATE HATE the hair.

    • Karen Belgrad

I kind of like the hair… Terry Nunn realness!

      • MilaXX

I thought of Til Tuesday, but Terry Nunn is spot on.

      • FibonacciSequins

        I like it too.

      • Kent Roby

Yeah, I kinda love this fun intentional 2-tone effect, as opposed to any of the dye jobs that just look like roots needing touch-up.

        • Diva in 4 Inch Heels

Maybe, I’m mistaken, but didn’t Blondie rock two toned hair at one time in the 80s?

    • charlotte

A new interpretation of spaniel hair!

    • ampg

I had a housemate in college with that hair in 1996.

    • MK03

      It’s very Narcissa Malfoy.

    • Lauren

She said the hair was for a role, but that she kept it for a little while for fun. I can’t blame her.

    • Thank you! Coming here to say she is bi. And she is ROCKING the tomboy femme realness. Loving it.

  • sugarkane105

Didn’t this woman like JUST pop out a baby? And is already werqing the leather pants? I give up.

    • j_am

      I know, right?? DANG.

    • Sal

If just means almost a year ago. Still impressive though

  • Scimommy

It does look a bit costumey, but it’s also gorgeous. Except for the hair – the hair is ugly. Also, as Serenachan pointed out, she’s bi. Also, also, she has dressed in a similar butch style at other events as well.

    • Perigee

Yes, this look fits into her general style wheelhouse. Regardless of her sexual orientation, if a lady who never played with gender when she dressed up showed like this, I would role my eyes. But ERW does play with men’s looks in a variety of venues, usually to good effect. I love this outfit.

  • MilaXX

She looks like she’s remaking Til Tuesday’s video Voices Carry.

ETA: Woops, got my 80’s bands mixed up.

    • The Versatile Chef

I thought it was Til Tuesday.

    • The Versatile Chef

Just looked – it is Til Tuesday! I remember they shot the video a couple of blocks from where I was working in the mid-eighties (Somerville, MA). Got to meet Aimee Mann and she was cool.

    • CT14

Nope. Terry Nunn in Berlin. The trend was bleached tips, but Nunn already had blond hair, so she dyed the tips dark.

Aimee Mann was still rocking the short spiky hair with the long braided rat tail at the time.

    • SugarSnap108

It’s definitely Til Tuesday. I know this because I listened to that song yesterday (Tuesday).

      • pherociouscake

        it’s definitely terri nunn

        • SugarSnap108

The song Mila mentioned is Til Tuesday, which is what I was referring to. The hair? Terri Nunn.

          • Kent Roby

There’s a song “Til Tuesday”? I only know of the group by that name, with Aimee Mann.

          • SugarSnap108

No, I meant the song “Voices Carry” is by Til Tuesday. I seem to be generating a tremendous amount of confusion regarding 1980s music and hairstyles. I should probably shut up!

          • Kent Roby

Ha, for some of us, the 80’s feels like yesterday (meaning the day before today, not the Beatles’ song “Yesterday” from the mid-60’s!). Incidentally, I now have a haircut that reminds everyone of Morissey, so, yeah, I pretty much love all things of the era!

    • fitzg

As an aside, Berlin was “Take My Breath Away.” From Top Gun. Which I may or may not have watched about 500 times when my neighbor gave me a pirated video during my junior year of high school. *Hangs head in shame*

    • Kent Roby

Yeah, Aimee Mann’s hair in the “Voices Carry” video was, I think, all platinum and spiky, with that tiny little braid in the back that her hot abusive man (again, in the video) hated.

  • What is wrong with her hair? J’adore the shoes.

  • kimmeister

It’s too much. I guess she had to wear the gloves to keep the clutch from perforating her hands. This might be the first time I’ve seen Louboutin flats.

  • Sarah

Her hair is making me think she recently escaped Pepé le Pew’s attempts to turn her into a ladyskunk. I like her outfit fine, but wish the shoes were black, not Pewee Hermanesque.

    • zenobar

    • MissAmynae

needed to be black or maybe silver. the white is just jarring.

  • FibonacciSequins

Much too much on point for me. I like each element, but she shouldn’t have worn them all together.

  • @Biting Panda

    I approve.
I’m contemplating a highly noticeable *yet professional* color change. This won’t be it, but I can wish.

    • Alyssa

Go for it…I do extreme color changes every 6-months or so (in between are the transition phases). 🙂

  • random_poster

I didn’t like that hair on Terri Nunn, either. Take My Breath Away is now my earworm.

I agree that the clothes are a great look.

  • Her face is flawless.

I love a good theme so I’m hoping the hair was for the night and changed the next day.

  • Cheryl

I love it, all of it, including the hair.

  • Danielle

I kind of… Love this? All of it?

  • alyce1213

I agree, the gloves and clutch are best left home — superfluous accessories that tip the outfit into costumeland. Otherwise, I like it, especially the shoes — very FemButch.

  • what not

I’m actually liking her more now that she’s playing with her look and not just doing the retro glam thing. Accessories aside, it’s an attagirl for me.

  • Angela

It’s very Blondie meets Elvis Costello circa 1978. In other words, I covet.

    • VictoriaDiNardo

with Joe Jackson “Is She Really Going Out With Him” shoes!

      • Yes and yes!

      • MartyBellerMask

Gotta LOOK SHARP!! (I just heard that song this morning.) 🙂

    • Anna

Yes! Although I think I may be by my lonesome in my dislike for the shoes – they make Evan’s feet look enormous, and are very focus-stealing IMHO.

      • jabes

You’re not alone — I think they’re super costume-y,. A scrolldown fug(as the Fug Girls say), if I ever saw one.

  • CT14

    I love it. It’s so 80s in a good way. Even the hair–Berlin 1986.

  • vitaminC

And the clown shoes. Just take off all your accessories, dearie, and ask the nice man next to you for some loaners.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

I hope she moon-walked across the carpet.

  • quiltrx

The shoes and clutch are SO awesome. I like the whole outfit a lot, just maybe not every piece of it at the same time.
And somewhere, Terri Nunn is smiling. 🙂

  • IMNAngryLiberal

LOVE the shoes — at last .. Louboutin’s that I might actually be able to walk in! Still couldn’t afford them however.

  • SugarSnap108

Love it, except for the gloves. And I’m not completely sold on the shoes — They’re great, but I’m not in love with black leather pants and white shoes.

  • msdamselfly

The hair is horrible. I cant even look

    • bitchybitchybitchy

This is a hair trend that needs to go away. Whatever the stylist said, it looks cheap, in a cheap way.

  • LeelaST

Costume all the way; not evening being bisexual gives her a pass to do this. “Too on-point” is exactly right.

  • fursa_saida

I LOVE IT. I agree the gloves are unnecessary. And, yes, as others have said, she’s bi.

  • YoungSally

Definitely has an Ellen Page vibe — she’s dressing for the crowd.

  • demidaemon

I kind of love this, especially the brazenness of going out in this particular outfit. Attagirl.

  • Loladog10

Oh no! There’s a difference between Butch chic and Butch costume? Oy. I’ll never get it right.

  • Lise

Evan is an out, proud and very vocal bisexual. Please don’t make that mistake again, TLo.

As for the look, I love it. Fun and sexy, just like the woman wearing it.

  • Katie

Definitely not a fan of the shoes. I think white was a great way to go but the point is too extreme for me. It’s all I see and the rest is such a great look – the shoes shouldn’t be so distracting.

  • macwell

I think she looks appropriately cool.

  • Trickytrisha

    Theme dressing done beautifully.

  • gloriana232

The gloves are dumb. I LOVE the jacket.

  • Pterodactyl111

I hate that hair, and the gloves are a bit much, but otherwise I think it’s great.

  • Verascity

I’m pretty sure she’s not straight.

    • BLauD

Yeah, I think she’s identified herself as bisexual, though she’s currently married with a … son?

      • tinycactus

Being married to a dude and/or having a kid does not require her to stop identifying as a bisexual

        • BLauD

Didn’t say it did at all. Just noting that because it may be where T-Lo got tripped up and called her straight.

          • tinycactus

Fair enough. I brought it up based on all the experiences I’ve had of people trying to delegitimize my bi identity because I’m in a LTR with another woman. My apologies if I came off too aggressive.

          • BLauD

Not at all. Sorry for the confusion!

          • KinoEye

Right there with ya. I really, really hate the whole “pick a side!” thing. I tend to prefer men and have a much longer history with them in terms of dating, but I’m still attracted to the ladies. It doesn’t just go away if/when I start dating a guy (or girl). None of this was directed at you, BLauD — just nice to vent about it with someone else who’s experienced the same thing!

  • BLauD

I really wish she had not put on the gloves, that would have helped a lot. It reads costume otherwise.

  • I love it; she’s having fun. Nice to see ERW back in these pages.

  • decormaven

Shoes in black, ditch the gloves, and I’m good with this.

  • beebee10

Sister is bi and she gets to fly the rainbow flag as she likes it. Love her look!

  • eight_of_nine

I love the look, but the shoes are distracting. The bright white combined with the pointed toe makes the eye go straight to them.

  • Susan Velazquez

    Scroll down fug, for sure

  • formerlyAnon

I like the hair. I’d have preferred very sharp, Hepburn/Bacall menswear-inspired trousers, but I tend to dislike leggings as pants and tight leather pants across the board, so it has little to do with the venue or look. With the rest of the ensemble the leather demi-gloves are fine.

  • burn the shoes

  • Haley Buchanan

I hate ombre/two-tone hair SO MUCH. It might be my least favorite trend of the last decade.

  • Shelby

ERW is bi and I adore her look. I would only trade the shoes for heels, but that’s just my preference. 😀

  • ERW and Janelle Monae’s outfits have very similar themes.

  • saintebeuve

I hate the gloves in a visceral, you’re not riding a bike or at the gym why god, kind of way, but then I saw the clutch. Yeah, I’d be wearing them, too, in a flash. Thing is prickly!

  • Miss wks

Those shoes make my lesbian penis soft….

  • snarkykitten

Sweet baby jesus, that hair is AWFUL.

  • Lori

Dang, those shoes make her feet look huge. Also, I hate those gloves. Hate them. If she ditched those things the clutch would be fine.

  • Fuchsiaforever

Those look like clown shoes! Lol I wish she had worn them in black…

  • shopgirl716

The shoes. I just… can’t. They make her feet look HUGE.

  • FridaStaire

    Designer dyke parody! Camp!

  • livesarah

When I saw the thumbnail I thought it was Jena Malone. I’ll leave it at that.

  • WHAT. Evan has clearly fallen off the style wagon. What happened?? She looks awful and has never before been less than chic!

  • Annmarie Kane

Did she mug a clown for those shoes?

  • ♕ Natalie ♕

Evan isn’t straight though, she’s bisexual and she’s had this type of look up her sleeve before.

  • Melanie

Debbie Harry wants her style back.

  • I don’t really like the gloves, but they are practical with a spiky clutch. And I think I would prefer the shoes either in the black or as a co-respondent colourway.

    • formerlyAnon

Yeah. The white shoes intrude themselves upon one’s notice just a bit too much.

  • MoHub

I think I’m good with this down to the hip, but the pants, shoes, half gloves, and clutch negate any good the jacket, shirt, and tie are doing.

  • Michele Morningstar

I would have loved this way more had she gone with simple flats instead. But I love pretty much everything else!

  • NeenaJ

Janelle Monáe called – she wants her outfit back. But, give ME the shoes!

  • Alyssa

I love it all…except for the shoes. Unsure on the hair…it’s different and unique, which I appreciate, but not sure it’s actually werqing on her.

  • ojosazules

The shoes and hair give this an elegant clown sort of vibe. I don’t like it.

  • MartyBellerMask

I’d cry costume if she never dressed like this otherwise, but since she’s been known to rock a suit at other events, I say rock on!

  • Dagney

Serving up Oingo Boingo realness. IN!!

    • Shawn EH

Or Berlin. Is there a Blondie biopic in the works? I’d go see it.

    • snarkykitten

      Not seeing the Boingo-ness…

  • cocohall

Madonna would like her gloves back. I agree that she looks a bit too-too in this look. But I do like the homage to Andy Warhol with her hair. Nice touch.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

I should complain about the purse and gloves, but I can’t because I love her too much and I missed her terribly. When it comes to personal style (not so much as an actress), she’s my girlcrush.

  • rissa42210

Agree that the gloves and purse, but be careful not to pigeon-hole people! I’m pretty sure she is out as bisexual.

  • Justine

Lose the gloves and swap the shoes and it would be less costume and more fashion, IMHO.

  • tereliz

I fucking love this look on her and I don’t care who knows it.

  • crash1212

THOSE SHOES!!! In my closet NOW! I love everything about this look. Don’t change a thing…well maybe the hair is a bit questionable, but when she looks as great as she does, who am I to quibble?

  • elirt

Just showin’ off her street cred!

  • I think she looks great. If she’d forgotten the gloves and traded the shirt/tie for a tank or slouchy T, I’d love it even more.

  • Lilithcat

    The gloves are ridiculous.

And there is no excuse for the hair, unless it’s for a role.

    Otherwise, I like.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I’d definitely ditch the gloves and the shoes. They just draw too much focus.

  • irielle

I like the jacket, but I totally agree about the bag and gloves.

  • elemspbee

The SHOES!!! yum. i want one.

  • The hair. Ditch the hair. I like the rest of the outfit.

  • Mary Lauer

I will take the half gloves and the spiked clutch over those SHOES (UGH!), any day!

  • JynxTheCat

    I loves. Fun.

  • Tina501

I know this was a year ago but I have to share information that might help you. Bi-Sexual, not straight. Hair was done for some Dakota Fanning movie, also…she was on the Bill that night. Singing at a rock show so…I think a little costume is acceptable! It’s all about the context.
