Amanda Seyfried in Givenchy at the “A Million Ways To Die In The West” Premiere

Posted on May 16, 2014

Is it weird that she’s wearing sheer black hose with a sheer black dress? Or are we just not used to seeing sheer hosiery on a starlet?

We don’t know… it’s a little weird. Like she’s wearing a sheer body suit under a little black dress or something. It doesn’t help that the dress is too tricky for its own good. You get to put big honking moths on your dress OR you get to have tricky-ass sleeves. You can’t have both in the same dress. You add some questionable beading and pleats, and you’ve got yourself something that drove past the sign that says “Overdesigned” 20 miles ago. Credit for wearing something interesting, but there’s a bit too much interesting for one poor garment to handle.

Oh no no, honey…those tights need to burn.

  • GoAwayKardash

I personally love sheer black hose. It’s very 70’s French Vogue chic.

    • Angela

I concur. It’s what’s going on above them that is the problem.

      • Imma Mäder

This! I love sheer black hose, it makes everyone’s legs look shapelier. But they don’t go with sheer elsewhere in a dress, apparently

        • shopgirl716

I have always thought sheer black hose were oh so sexy. But this is a lot of sheer going on.

    • Sara__B

Love sheer hose, but NOT with open toe shoes.

      • annla

Also, THOSE shoes, I do not like.

        • zmayhem

My 7-year-old, who shares a name with the shoes, is quite aggrieved and insulted by them. “Those are such pretty shoes in front, but they have a HORRIBLE HEEL. I HATE THOSE HEELS.” I’m raising this girl right!

    • JynxTheCat

agreed. Maybe sheer overkill on THIS particular ensemble but were that a skirt and she had a crisp white bouse on – she would kick all the ass in Ass Town.

    • MaryMcClelland

I love, love, love them too. They make everyone’s legs look fabulous too. However, they are not a good fit with this dress since the sleeves/bodice are also sheer. The all together affect is costume-y. I also don’t think the hose work for this time of year. This entire look is too dour for spring/summer.

  • I can’t with hose under peeptoe shoes.

The sheer on the top is somehow highlighting her cleavage rather than concealing it, and I don’t think it works.

    • BLauD

All this. I can’t even look at the overdesigned mess because I am horrified at the peeptoe with hose.

    • Sarah

Yes, No Hose with Peep Toes. I agree about the cleavage. The wrinkles are making what should be dewy and smooth look shrouded in gloom. Doom Boobs.

      • PinkyAndNoBrain

Please make a movie called Doom Boobs. I need that in my life right now.

    • AnguaVonUberwald

Can you explain to me this aversion? I don’t understand. I know this is a fashion “rule”, but really, I don’t think it looks bad at all.

      • Jackie4g

It doesn’t look bad. In the real world, people wear hose more often than they go bare legged, and it’s a good thing. All those bare legged starlets during the winter months made me cringe. Hose are flattering to most people’s legs and they are appropriate when dressed up. The peep toed shoes are the mistake, not the hosiery.

        • AnguaVonUberwald

Yes, I know, I don’t understand why peep toed shoes with hose are a mistake. I think they look quite nice, here, and on other stars featured here. I just feel like this “rule” has no real reasoning behind it.

          • Jackie4g

It used to be a valid objection back in the days when the toes and heels of hose were reinforced. The prejudice may be outdated with the technology of modern knitting machines.

      • I think it looks dreadful – you nearly always have a seam cutting across your toes and it mostly defeats the purpose of wearing peeptoe shoes. But as with any fashion “rule” your mileage may vary. I’m fascinated that you think *any* fashion rules have real reasoning behind them, when they are mostly arbitrary and dependent on the situation.

        • AnguaVonUberwald

Ha, that is true about the arbitrary rules! I thought maybe there was something other than “I don’t think it looks good”. I just never really noticed the seam on others, and the only time you can really see it is if there is a closeup of feet. So, yeah, YMMV, I guess!

  • Danielle

That askew faux ruby embellishment BUGS me to NO END.

    • Anita Karenin

nooooo I need it as a necklace

    • Kristi Mitchell

THANK YOU! I was just going to say my OCD is kicking in just looking at it. If she were in front of me I don’t think I’d be able to stop myself from reaching out and trying to ‘fix’ it.

  • andcoh

    I like her makeup.

  • Capt. Renault

Are her shoes missing a part?

    • StillGary

wow — she is balancing on nails!

    • Tlazolteotl

They look like a broken ankle waiting to happen.

  • @Biting Panda

That dress itself is just weird.

    • Trent

*In Michael Kors Voice*: “Gypsy Widow in Santa Fe. Honey, try again.”

      • DebbieLovesShoes

        Well done.

  • Violentcello

She has very pretty eyes and a great rack, but that dress is just too much. Keep the moths, lose the sleeves (or do something else with them) and she’d look rad.

    • random_poster

I also prefer the moths to the sleeves.

    • Imma Mäder

yes, the moths are so cool, a nice change from the ubiquitous butterflies. kinda darker imagery..

      • demidaemon

  • majorbedhead

The black hose are fine. Wearing them with open-toed shoes is not. And that dress is just a travesty.

    • BLauD

That was my exact thought upon seeing her shoes. What the heck?

  • HomeOfficeGirl

The hose are the least of the problems. here. The lipstick and everything about the top – moths? glued on ruby? sheer to a slightly droopy looking bust? Whaaaa??

  • gabbilevy

Nope, nope. Go home, try again.

  • NormDeplume720

I can’t get past the fact that it makes her boobs look weird. Which is sad, because that’s probably a difficult thing to do.

    • MilaXX

The boobs look weird because they aren’t as supported as they should be. She’s either free balling or wearing those pasted cup thingys. The spaghetti straps make it impossible to wear a regular bra, and the deep plunge rules out a strapless.

      • NormDeplume720

Illusion fabric does bad things to people.

  • Shug

Love love love sheer black hose.

  • Anna

Manages to be both funereal and on-the-prowl.

  • What is going on with those heels….?

    • what not

I think I might like them…I’d like a closer look.

  • ms_kat

I like the moth collars, I must admit. I’d like them better on a different top. And I ADORE the movie posters (which I’ve been seeing at bus stops all over). And that’s about it.

  • hughman

Very “All That Jazz”, very “Cell Block Tango”.

    • decormaven

“He had it coming, he had it coming….”

    • SewingSiren

I was thinking more along the lines of Mud Club circa 1984.

    • FridaStaire

…and that can only be good!

  • deelup

With five minutes and a pair of scissors I think she could look fantastic. The hose with the dress are a tad Chicago, but I love that look.

  • MilaXX

That dress is ugly and so are the shoes. Honestly the black hosiery is the least of her worries.

  • marlie

Her makeup looks pretty great. I’m glad they emphasized her lips, rather than always defaulting to the heavy eye. The dress is… interesting. Get rid of one element (preferably the fussy sleeves), and I’d be on board. And maybe the sheer hose was meant to mirror the sheer sleeves and neckline, but agree that there’s something a little off.

  • lunchcoma

I don’t mind the black hose, but Amanda’s trying the same trick I used in high school. I eventually learned that wearing something black and sheer over a low cut top makes it seem less rather than more respectable. Slutty widow isn’t a good look on anyone. Hopefully Amanda figures that out too.

  • FibonacciSequins

I want to rip off those sleeves and beat them to shreds with those heels, then throw the lot into a fire.

  • sherrietee

I think it would look better if the netting in the dress weren’t so loose on her top. It makes her sternum all melty and that’s not a good look for anyone.

  • uprightcitizen

It’s all a little too “Mrs. Robinson, are you trying to seduce me?” for an actress so young.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I’d rip off all the netting and weirdness and let it be a LBD. The shoes look ok from the front, but from the side… Do we really need crutchy shoes?

  • bluefish

Love the weird shoes, the black hose, the hair — Not the dress. She’s got gorgeous legs and I’m ready for sheer black stockings. Terrible looking stuff going on around that collar.

  • Sarah

There was no need for the lacy bits on the sleeves. Get them off, and the sheer to lay flat on the chest, then give her some non-peep shoes, and I’d like it. I do dig the moths and the stud business.

    • kimmeister

Yes, the lace halves of the sleeves are the single worst thing about this look, even worse than the hose with peeptoes. I have no issue with sheer hose with a sheer top because I have done that on many occasions.

  • MoHub

There is an undeniable titscrepancy happening there. And i’d be fine with the hose if it weren’t for the peeptoe shoes.

  • SewingSiren

True story : Once I cut the back out of a little black interlock jersey tank dress and I inserted a piece of black chiffon in the cut out , then I used a regular sewing machine straight stitch to “embroider” a spider web on the chiffon. Then (not done yet!) I made a “spider” out of red rhinestones and that damn spider never would hang right , it was too heavy. Anyway my dress was about a sophisticated as this Amanda’s, and a bargain too.

    • demidaemon

I can’t tell if this is a compliment or an insult.

      • SewingSiren

        Self deprecating humor.

        • demidaemon

          Understood. 🙂

    • Qitkat

And most likely would have garnered at least third place in any challenge of recent PR seasons.

    • DebbieLovesShoes

  • Fuchsiaforever

Yes very weird. Shoes, hose and moths- ALL weird.

  • MoHub

I’m surprised at Givenchy. What happened to the clean looks he made for Audrey Hepburn?

    • FibonacciSequins

Died along with him in the 80s? I think Riccardo Tischi is the creative director for womenswear now. You know, the guy who designed the sofa cushion dress Kim K wore to the Met Gala last year.

      • MoHub

Hubert is still alive. One has to wonder why he allows his name to be put on such schlock.

        • FibonacciSequins

Oh my goodness, I had no idea he was still alive – how old is he? The company was sold to LVMH long ago, so I assume he has absolutely no control over his name or the design house.

  • Janet B

I like her makeup and her hose, the rest is a mess.

  • mickiemonkey

    THOSE LIPS. Perfection.

  • Lisalady161

I love that she’s wearing hose….I want to see it come back for ladystars, I really do. But that dress is waaaaaayyyy too overworked. Sorry, sweet Amanda, send that back!

  • Joanna

I would like, for once, to see her makeup a little less “done.” The lips take away from her awesome eyes.

  • Pennymac

GAH! That fake ruby is killing me. The rest is just sad. But I’d be in favor of sheer black if deployed correctly with the right shoe.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Well, since I’m wearing sheer black hose today, I’m going to say they’re the best part of this outfit. It’s the dress that’s wonky.

  • boweryboy

    Nah, I don’t think it’s weird. It’s that dress that’s weird.

  • SuzyQuzey

Love the sleeves, hate the moths and the other red oval thing at the neck. I am okay with the hose. This time.

  • Mich

Not a fan of any kind of hose with open toe shoes. I think that is a fashion no-no.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

TLO said the word “sheer” three times. In a row. The K-people are due to get married this weekend. I am fearful and maybe a bit superstitious after all.

  • TigerLaverada

No, I actually like the hose. I do not, however, like the dress. Overdesigned is spot on.

  • Miss Ruth

Askew faux ruby embellishment (TM Danielle) is focus pulling, and OMG, please please please ladystars, lose the ennui braids.

  • salty

I too love sheer black hose. Can’t say I’d wear them with this look if I had Mandy’s legs, then again I can’t say I’d wear this look at all.

  • crash1212

Take that sheer top thingy off altogether and you might have something here. Maybe. Those shoes are just weird and sheer hose (or hose of any kind) with open toed shoes bugs. Also, that is not her red lip.

  • Amel

This is giving me a little “grown-up Wednesday Addams” for some reason

  • Jecca2244

My MIL said it has been 1000 degrees in LA this week. why the hosiery????

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Yes,overdesigned sums this one up nicely. If the designer at Givenchy had taken one of those elements and designed the dress around that element it might have worked.

  • kat89

I don’t mind the sheer hose but not with those shoes and WTF with those sleeves?

  • A Certain Someone

A bit too Silence of the Lambs for my taste…

  • IMNAngryLiberal

The sheer hose are the only part of the ensemble that I like.

  • Sweet beejeebus, was she wearing that in LA this week??? 105 is about 30 degrees too hot for *any* type of hosiery.

  • Cassidy Olsen

Lipstick is amazing and the hair is cute, but the dress is a pass.

  • ShaoLinKitten

I hope Amanda Seyfried is at the vanguard of a movement to bring back sheer hose. I like the way they look.

  • LeelaST

I’ve always loved black tights and sheer black hose. The only thing that bothers me is the way the bodice/neck is pulling and that she really needs a bra or something other support.

  • tired_mommy

Black hose seem odd based on how incredibly hot it is in LA right now–the people in the background of the first shot are in tank dresses.

  • jw_ny

Her black hose don’t bother me anywhere near as much as the loose sheer sleeves and bodice, and neither of those even anywhere near as much as how horrid that orange/red lipstick is against her fair complexion…just awful!

Love the neckline/moths though 🙂 (not the ruby pin!)

  • saintebeuve

Given that it’s been 100 degrees here, with gross winds, I give her credit for keeping her make-up more or less where it’s supposed to be and I don’t blame her for going sheer. That said, there are better ways to be cool, comfortable, and lovely.

  • cocohall

Uncles, your observations are so on point that there is nothing left to say, but to motion for one of her handlers to take off his jacket and cover her up.

  • Monabel

The hose are the only element that works. I hate what this hot mess dress does to her balcon.

  • Gatto Nero

The dress is overwrought, and the proportions are doing terrible things to her body.
I don’t mind the sheer hose, though.

  • LadyVimes

I like the hose. The dress would have been in Lea territory without. They add a bit of Classic Sexy.

  • Haley Buchanan

I think the hose are fine. The boobs are weird, though. Some sort of foundation garment is desperately missing here.

  • Teresa Wyatt

The girl has beautiful legs…I’m jus sayin’

  • MaggieSays

I like the idea of the dress, but not this dress.

  • LadyLuck777

I like the dress, but the sheer hose and those shoes scream 1950’s Ann Miller.

  • The sheer black hose are the only part I like.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

She’s the second cast member of this movie who is not smiling at the premiere. I think this movie may suck.

  • Trickytrisha

Yay for hosiery! I’m all for it making a comeback. This is such a quirky outfit that I have to applaud a little, but those moths are definitely de trop.

  • nannypoo

I can’t imagine what you would wear with this other than sheer black hose. The problem is that the dress sucks, but there is nothing wrong with the hose.

  • She’s gorgeous. Dress… not!

  • Jeannie Shmina Greenwald

Those shoes give new meaning to the term ‘spiky heels’.

  • Dagney

IN. for a smart deployment of sheer hose. It was a risky move but they complete the look.

  • the stretching and rippling across the chest is ruining the look for me. but, damn, her legs look fine in those hose.

  • sunflower

It has a very witchy vibe. She has a contract with Givenchy and I think she sometimes has odd dresses foisted upon her, like Jennifer Lawrence with Dior.

  • Clash D

Love the head, hate the sheer.
Love the hose, hatehatehate the shoes.

  • I don’t get her.

  • R.A.

    FACE. That is all.

  • It’s weird.

  • E. D.

Too bad the whole top half of that dress doesn’t fit. Yikes.

  • Vaniljekjeks

I love it. I am having a sheer black fetish at the moment. I wear sheer black dress and sheer black hose and I look awesome.

  • Skippymom1

“Overdesigned 20 miles ago” made me snort. I love the hose and I knew those shoes would look great if someone wore them. Hers legs look spectacularly sexy, but the dress is a no.

  • alyce1213

I love sheer black hose. So does the hubs — he gets frisky when I wear them.
Too much going on with that dress.

  • Tee

I’m going to give her a pass on this one because at least it’s interesting.

  • DebbieLovesShoes

ENOUGH WITH THE ELSA PRINCESS BRAIDS! Can we call agree on that, please?

  • ktr33

The sheer hose is the LEAST of this outfit’s problems, and I’m not a fan of sheer hose. The dress is some strange take on a Spanish widow, with those sleeves looking like mantillas, plus it doesn’t fit across the chest. I just think it’s ugly, in total. Great gams in last shot.

  • unbornfawn

Over designed dress. Love the hosiery.

  • Sabin

She’s wearing nylons with OPEN-TOED SHOES. Big-assed no.

Oh, and the dress is weird. And not I a good way. Harrumph.

  • I really love that butterfly collar, but the rest of it isn’t setting me on fire. Also the shoes look like wedges that got into an industrial accident and were hastily repaired with a nail.

  • Zuber

That is one hell of an ugly mess!

  • H2olovngrl

Not really loving Givenchy as of late. It’s all overworked

  • MannahattaMamma

that face…she could be Angelina’s daughter

  • thatch pheasant

    ugly AND strange.

ugly AND strange. Grab the Maalox.

  • thatch pheasant

Thumbs up from Vlad, the Impaler!

  • bringbackbeatles

Dress is way, way, way overdesigned on it’s own. Then add the sheer hose with the sheer dress and the tricky peep toes and it’s too much. The thing that bothers me the most is how it doesn’t seem to fit right in the bust. It’s all bunched up.

  • suzq

As she screws holes into the red carpet with each step.

  • Julaine Haraden Morley

The sheer black hose are strangly aging…
