Aubrey Plaza in Viktor & Rolf at the 2014 American Comedy Awards

Posted on April 28, 2014

This happens so often with lady stars and their stylists. They find a really cool dress with a wild print, like this one:

And they style it totally poolside or cabana.

Her hair looks like she drip-dried after swimming for a couple of hours and those sandals look like the complimentary pair from her hotel room. It’s a shame, because the longer we look at that dress, the cooler we think it is. And it suits her to a T. But she needs a total rethink on the hair and makeup, at least one funky piece of jewelry, and a small bonfire to deal with that footwear.

We’d have gone in a funky/hip hop-inspired direction with this one, probably.

    • @Biting Panda

Hair up, a bold, silver cuff on one wrist, and strapppy(?) black shoe.
For what it’s worth, I love that blue on her.

      • Danielle

Tooooootally feel you on the silver cuff.

    • Shelby

The stiff posing doesn’t help either… But I love the dress and I love it on her. :-D

    • Glam Dixie

That was my first thought when looking at her, pool hair and pool shoes. The look needs jewelry and her nose looks like she just broke it. Her makeup artist did something funny there maybe? I’ve never noticed that issue with her before.

    • clatie

I officially don’t get her. On any level.

    • alyce1213

The color is great and it fits her well (maybe could use a touch off at the hem).
She could’ve gotten a blowout for forty bucks. Bigger, fuller hair could work with the halter.

    • Twigg

She looks SO uncomfortable in that dress. Send it to someone who will wear it well.

      • Stella Zawistowski

Which is too bad, because it really does suit her. With well-styled hair and an accessory, this could have been a WERQ.

    • Anna

I’m craving tropical drinks all of a sudden.

Those white sandals are just dreadful, but I love the colours on her. The hair astounds me. I admit, I’m lazy, I put mine up most of the time. I don’t know what could possibly be her excuse when she has people to do it for her.

    • rkdgal

When my hair ends up looking like that (and it often does), I consider it a fail and put it up or start over. Who knew I was red-carpet ready the entire time?

    • MannahattaMamma

who IS this person? great dress but she looks so uncomfortable that I feel sorry for her (and that’s even before her hair & shoes. My hair looks like that all the time, but who the hell am i; and I wouldn’t buy those shoes if you held a gun to my head) .. someone please shepherd this young lass into an RC comfort zone before she collapses.

      • demidaemon

She’s an extremely quirky actress from Parks and Rec. With a serious case of the styling blues.

        • AthenaJ

I feel like I’ve seen her on Portlandia too.

    • https://twitter.com/actual_grownup aly

Were these photos taken at the end of the night? She looks like she would’ve looked better 4 hours ago.

    • SBG

      Great color. Oh so close.

    • kipper

LOVE VandR – but the bottom white OR the styling is giving this a total HP create your own textile vibe….

    • FibonacciSequins

      Dat hair tho.

    • Judih1

THIS. is why I so love this blog. You guys always NAIL it – even when I don’t agree wilth your accessments- you always give such accurate, concise and funny explanations. I am TOTALLY in agreement with you on this one

    • Mothra

Does she not own a hairbrush? I am not a fan of the dress, maybe it doesn’t photograph well. It looks like it is made out of plastic and looks very stiff which I think is the opposite of what the intent is.

    • MK03

She looks like she was caught in a graffiti fight on the way there.

    • KinoEye

She and her team always flub it on the details. Great dress, and definitely her shade of blue.

    • misstressofsylar

I love her so much that this really hurts. Leslie would have never allowed such an atrosity to happen to April.

    • BLauD

Awesome dress, though I did have to see it all at once. First glance/scroll looked a bit cheap/Project Runway.
Girl, that is not your hair. Get it off your face, get it brushed. Really, most anything would be an improvement.

    • Gatto Nero

That blue is great on her. Slit seems a little too high (or is it me?)
Agree completely on the accessories and styling.

    • Sarah

Before we go to the step and repeat, we should remember to re-apply our lipstick, Aubrey. I like the dress, but I want a tan sandal, bronze jewelry, and an updo.

    • Synnae

Great dress (although I would like it better without the slit) but horrible horrible styling. Just a pony tail would have been an improvement!

    • estella_nyc

That print makes my eyes hurt.

    • marlie

I don’t even love the dress. I don’t like the way it fits in the bodice. But then the just-out-of-the-shower hair, and the fugly shoes… I’m underwhelmed. Also, why is this girl still around?

      • MilaXX

She’s on one of the funniest comedies around and is actually really funny on the show.

        • marlie

Huh. I’ve never seen an episode of Parks and Rec (I had to IMDB her to see *what* show you were talking about), so the only (female) cast members I knew about were Amy and Rashida.

          • MilaXX

She also did an hilarious short as live person Daria. I’m not sure if you were a fan of the 80′s cartoon or not, but she was spot on. Google Aubrey Plaza as Daria and it should come up.

    • venusvelvet

Great posture – so unlike April’s usual slouch.

    • Imasewsure

The bottom of that dress is so ugly it distracts the eye from how bad her hair looks… there’s no looking away from those hideous orthopedic sandals though… uglier than UGGS… uglier than Birkenstocks… and that is hard to do!

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Her hair makes my eyes hurt.

    • formerlyAnon

I am distracted by the odd resemblance to a [healthy weight & brunette] Michelle Phillips which I attribute to the eyes and hair. I say “odd” because she really doesn’t look like her at all, yet that’s all I can see.

    • ashtangajunkie

That hair is not for a red carpet. Gah, how I loathe misses like this. You’re young, attractive, and were handed a cool, expensive dress to wear – DO YOUR FUCKING HAIR.

    • unbornfawn

Better styling and this could have been a WERQ.

    • Little_Olive

Th print needed to be extended so it finished lower on the dress. There is too much white at the bottom.

    • MilaXX

I would have done a navy shoe for starters. High pony and cuff bracelet. You want to go summer, not poolside.

    • Carly Clement

I think I will have to disagree here… That dress would look good short… chop off the white parts and get it shortened then I will like the dress… but I agree on the the styling issues

    • uprightcitizen

Love Aubrey Plaza. But McKenzie Phillip’s old hairstyle from 1974 isn’t doing her any favors. I can see where she would think it would because there’s a 70′s vibe to this dress, but it doesn’t flatter the shape of her face, and she needed a glam 70′s do. More Jaclyn Smith, less Kristy McNichol.

    • quiltrx

I see funky as the way to go with this, too. Maybe some awesome orange shoes, some (but not much) weird jewelry. She’s totally phoning it in…and you can’t do that when people don’t really know who you are yet.

    • suzq

Channel your inner Nicki Minaj or Rihanna. It’s a fab dress.

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

A fuschia necklace or heavy gold or hematite chain link bracelets would have looked great here. Black shoes for sure, something strappy and unexpected. Slick hair, maybe a high pony and sideswept bang. What a missed opportunity.

    • GeoDiva

Pull her hair off her face and it would be really good look for her.

    • Fuchsiaforever

So much missed potential! :( great dress…terrible styling.

    • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

My grandma wants her “fancy” shoes back.

    • CT14

She looks afraid to move her arms.

ETA: I thought this was Chloe Bennet from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. I’m now not convinced they are separate people.

    • mila_8

You slay me, “and a small bonfire to deal with that footwear.”

    • Fred Vaughn

Hair just a little more “done”, a darker lip, and waaaay different shoes (even if they were still white)…
