Rashida Jones in Trademark at Caudalie Boutique Spa Grand Opening

Posted on March 17, 2014

We always look at outfits like this and hear one thing in our heads. “Check out all the things I bought today!”

Not that we’re suggesting she paid for all these items. She’s almost certainly taking part in that mutually agreed-upon act of temporary shoplifting known as the celebrity red carpet. But it’s such an overload of an outfit that it feels like your room mate just came home from an all-day shopping binge and, in a buzz of adrenaline and multiple lattes, insists on immediately putting on every single thing she bought to show you, down to the kind of garish lipstick (that you silently tell yourself you will not refer to out loud as “garish” when she asks your opinion). “Wow, the skirt’s cute! The vest is cute! The purse is really cute! And the sandals? Oh my god, so cute, right? Just don’t – haha – wear it all together. Haha! Seriously. Don’t.”

  • She’s so adorably clueless.

    • Sarah

I just watched Celeste & Jesse Forever over the weekend and I was amazed by how good she looked in all the outfits they styled for her. Professional help!

      • @Biting Panda

        I loved that movie.

        • Rand Ortega

Never has a movie so adroitly, beautifully captured disingenuous hipster malaise & relationship ineptitude.

          • Kitten Mittons

Vocab win. Especially for a Monday. Gold star for you.

        • Sarah

I liked it okay, but by a quirk of fate I also saw something called “I Give It A Year” on Netflix recently, and I’m a little bummed about these semi-amicable divorce movies. But I’m sensitive since I’m going INTO a marriage and not trying to get OUT of one.

          • kimmeister

Getting married certainly changes your POV when watching a certain type of movie. “The Break Up” was HARD to watch even though our marriage is rock-solid.

  • PastryGoddess

No Rashida, not even your cute freckles can save this outfit. Nice try though

  • It kinda brings it to a real world level that I like, even though its overplayed.

  • RussellH88

I was going to say “Baglady Chic”, but this isn’t even Chic.

It’s like she’s wearing all of her clothes because she had no more room in her shopping cart.

    • Rand Ortega

  • Glam Dixie

Gentlemen, you have said all there is to be said about this.

  • Anna

I really like the top half. Could’ve been a cute casual look if she swapped the dirndl skirt for some slim trousers.

    • Little_Olive

I thought of that for a second. But then I went back to the photos and decided I really don’t like the t-shirt, in that it’s not really oversized, nor fitted and if it is square it’s all wrong for her. I mean I know it sounds nipticky, but those sleeves are awful.

      • Monabel

Second that about the T-shirt. Bad.

      • Anna

Upon closer inspection that does look like a t-shirt from the boys’ department. I do love the vest though.

      • kimmeister

YES!!! My biggest beef with this outfit is how the sleeves are sticking out like bells. If they had just been closer-fitting to the body, they wouldn’t have looked so terrible.

    • SugarSnap108

I love the vest. It’s a shame she doesn’t know what to do with it.

  • mshesterp

Compared to what she usually wears, I actually think this is pretty cute (I might lose the vest). Love the pops of red in the lips/purse/toes.
To me it’s a win for Miss Jones.

    • kmk05

Agreed x1000, especially with the losing of the vest. A different hairstyle would also have given this a more chic vibe.

      • vitaminC

See, I’d lose the blouse and fasten the vest up as a bodice/shirt. I think she needs something tailored to offset the full skirt.

        • kmk05

I think the patterns might clash, though (criss-crossed skirt and mottled vest). She could save it all by replacing that skirt with a pair of dark-washed jeans.

  • Rashida Jones does nothing for me. Acting wise, style wise, personality wise. She just seems…dry.

Thoughts on outfit: I like the vest and metallic sandals.

  • LipstickForPigs

I need to know what color is on her toes. Also, she looks like fun to grab a beer with.

  • crash1212

Huh. I like this. I love the skirt and shoes and the rest totally hangs together for me. Also, while the lip color might be not quite her shade – I know I’m still looking for the perfect red and I’m quite old! – I find it amazing that she doesn’t seem to have a lick of makeup on save for mascara. Natural beauty in all its glory.

    • kmk05

She has on sheer foundation, highlighter, blush, concealer and eyeliner (at the very least). Her face shows the beauty of having a knowledgeable makeup artist!

  • sienna elm

    love the vest!

  • Capt. Renault

Has she been wearing ear cuffs for long? Is she Bajoran? It might explain a few things…

    • Capt. Renault

      (I keed, I keed because I love.)

    • MilaXX

It doesn’t look like an ear cuff to me, it looks like she has several holes in her ears.

  • Jacob Bowen

I LOVE that skirt so I would take that vest and put it with black pants or even jeans, and find something much less busy for the top. Those sandals are SO wrong for this skirt!

  • marlie

Ditch the vest and the shoes, and *maybe* put o a different top. But I really like the skirt, and the color of the lipstick doesn’t bother me as much as the sloppy application of it.

  • MilaXX

I actually like this look. My only quibble is that it looks styled, maybe lose the vest. However considering some of the train wreck outfits Rashida so often wears, I’ll take it.

    • unpious

Yeah, I kinda like this. I’d ditch the vest, but I have an irrational hatred of vests.

  • Awww, I love her lipstick. Her whole face is adorable, actually. Love those bangs. I forgive everything else.

    • deelup

I love her lipstick too! I don’t know if bright lips are typically the most stylish makeup choice. But I always love them as long as they don’t clash.

  • Kent Roby

Starting the week with an outfit with a LOOSE THREAD on the skirt, before I’ve had my vat of coffee??? That’s just cruel!

  • Janet B

The t-shirt isn’t flattering at all.
The rest is pretty cute, but not all at once.

    • kimmeister

Yeah, not a single thing goes with any other thing. Except for the bag, that would work with pretty much anything else. Maybe she thought by using it, she could tie all the other pieces together?

  • Rand Ortega

Love the vest. But I think I’m distracted by the fact, in these photos, how much she looks like her mom. I then flash back to my undying love for “The Mod Squad” as a kid.

    • Imasewsure

Yes I too was obsessed although saved my biggest girl crush for pre-Charlie’s Angels Kate Jackson…

  • BobStPaul

Except for the shoes, I really like this.

  • CupcakeTrudy

Sort of feel that it works for street wear. Maybe because she’s so adorable. But, it is a LOT.
Those shoes were the wrong choice no matter what.

  • Kitten Mittons

So much going on. The shoes are too focus-pulling, and that shirt feels wrong, both in color and cut. Switch those out, and it might all work.

I like the skirt, though. And she is adorable. Girl loves her pockets, and I love that.

  • Gatto Nero

These pieces don’t do anything for me, together or separately.
    She’s adorable, though.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

    She needs a hair makeover.

  • Imasewsure

I saw “Rashida Jones in Trademark” and thought that we were just shortcutting to her trademark which is off to awful. Love the skirt and the shoes (not together), top and vest is ok (but not together). She is so cute though…

  • msdamselfly

    Her feet look great

  • Jaeda Laurez

I like the lipstick. But i think a pair of skinny jeans and a pair of black pumps or Chucks would have done this a world of good.

    • tinyredlocks

My vote is for the Chucks… 🙂

  • another_laura

Ya know, I could sign off on this except for the shoes. I don’t love it, but what hurts my eyes is those fugly shoes.

  • Sara Hottman

Your roommate interaction described my college years to a T. I’m dying.

  • yethica

I lurve her, but her fashion choices, not so much (most of the time).

  • Anna Bergman

    Shockingly boring.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

She is one of the few starlets I truly wish I looked like…I think she’s adorable. Change the shoes to all black, swap out the tee for a black tank or cami, lose the vest and the red lipstick.

  • Dan_In_NYC

Perhaps one of my favorite elements of following TLo (there are many) is watching the commentary on style evolution. Seeing Tina Fey go from clueless to stylish is fun to watch – and I’m eager to see Rashida’s evolution. She’s so beautiful, but her style is all over the place.

  • Victoria Anzalone

    Spot on.

  • formerlyAnon

She’s cute. The assemblage is too much, the lipstick is awful. But. The shoes are very cute and I love the nail color on her toes.

    • embers618

I think the lipstick would have looked better if they had picked one that looks good for her complexion instead of picking the one that matches her purse and toenail polish. She can wear a red lip, just not this particular red.

  • sagecreek

I think she looks adorable, but then, I had that exact same outfit in 1989, so I get the point.

  • Hermione

Love her freckles and her feet and shoes.

  • Fuchaforever

Ay ya ya yai…she’s so pretty and I like all the pieces but not together all at the same time…also I have a pet peeve about her bangs. Why do they have to start form the middle of her head? Shouldn’t bangs start like near your hairline, closer to the forehead? It just looks very strange…

  • MM4321

My 5 year old has tried cutting her own bangs, too. It’s not cute on her and it’s not cute on Rashida, either.

  • quiltrx

She totally just bought the skirt…it has several loose threads still hanging. I bet the tag’s still in the waist.

  • kipper

The cute-est mother that has three kids in two different schools on parent / teacher night…..

  • The only things I like here are her freckles and shoes.

  • Mrs. O

But the freckles are to die for.

  • Michelle Gennari

I think the vest ruins the whole thing. But yeah, she’s just adorable.

  • MannahattaMamma

but I think I really really like those shoes & can someone please tell me who made them and how much they cost so that I know I can never ever afford even ONE shoe and thus can stop daydreaming?
